Was Dangal better than Kapoor and Sons in 2016?

Don't get me wrong. I love the film Dangal for unwavering advocacy of winning in sports and its nuanced take on women’s liberation. The performances were splendid as well.

But Kapoor and Sons was easily the more layered, sensitive, and poignant film. It's premise was of a dysfunctional family but it was so much more - a depiction of homosexuality in an out-and-out mainstream film sans gay jokes and caricatures, a gentle take on infidelity, betrayal, love, and deceit. It wasn't the slightest bit predictable or boring, instead it blended entertainment with content in a very beautiful, sublime way.

If you had to pick between these 2 films of 2016, which one would you pick?

There were precisely 2 actors which if replaced would have made Kapoor & Sons a much better movie. Even after that, Dangal would still be a better movie, by miles! The purity of emotions, humor, inspiration, social message, direction, writing, music, cinematography, and, above all, acting was much superior. And all this despite being one of those rare clean family movies that can be watched in any setting.

Cant pick. Kapoor and Sons was more contemporary and Dangal was more old school but both were too good! Fawad Khan, Ratna Pathak, Rishi Kapoor and the dad were tooooo good.

Films like Dangal get made once in 10-20 years. Another level of brilliance .
