You can have success but if people don't know about your success, then it has little impact. After SKTKS, I remember seeing Kartik everywhere. He was doing ramp shows, giving interviews, bagging major endorsements, etc. Same with Ayushmann. You can be offered these things to an extent but mostly it is the actor's management that goes out and fetches these opportunities to gain visibility.
I think largely he didn't know how to (or didn't want to) market himself and maybe also didn't have a good team around him. This difference can be seen in the success of Chhichhore. As far as I know, he didn't do a single success interview for that film but I have seen multiple media activities for both Nitesh Tiwari and Shraddha post the film. I think it was probably the same for Dhoni as well. He was delivering these major successes but people were just not aware.
The thing is he saw such success before Kartik and Ayush. He was pretty much a big deal during 2014-2016 and was in same league as RS.He was booking big brand endorsements, fashion shows, big budget films like Chanda mama but he was also getting a lot of negative press with people calling him arrogant, pervert, his projects getting shelved and delayed and what not. I guess after all this he just decided to lay low, He changed his manager multiple times but it didn't work. I thought Chhichhore would help him bounce back but no one acknowledged it's success.
