These two movies are so far apart in styles and genres that the stories too cant help the comparison. BUT you know how in the Godfather there is no weak link? Also there is no scene that's unnecessary nothing exaggerated and everyone plays their parts well, too well. Gullyboy has that strain of a terrific ensemble cast that drives the movie just not Murad and that automatically makes it superior technically. Also Barfi is plagiarised in parts which disqualifies it entirely in my opinion as a movie.

Acting wise though Priyanka trumps Ranbir and Ranveer and whoever else. Jhilmil over Barfi and Murad. She brought such soul to Jhilmil that i didn't even mind the obvious flaws in her track and story. What a sparkling performance. From the hand movements to the noises. I watched Barfi in a NGO surrounded by autistic children who were so delighted and happy with Jhilmil I can't tell you enough. It was magical.

But autistic people look like regular people- in the sense, they don't make faces like Jhilmil did in the movie...Only people with cognitive disabilities have facial expressions like that of what PC enacted in Barfi...They didn't research it well, which is disappointing to people like me who have autistic family members...

Edit: None of the mainstream actors/movies get it right...not even the Hollywood ones...People think Autism means. Rainman...Rainman did more disservice to autistic people than help... I

Not autistic people have the same degree of autism. A distant nephew of mine looks absolutely normal but once you talk to him his behavior will give it away. The most extreme thing he does is gritting his teeth in a fit of sorts, almost bit his tongue off and repeats what you say like clockwork. He's autistic and cant attend regular school.

Now the people in the NGO too had autistic people abandoned by family but they were extremes. Neck movements, hand movements, constant tick-tick-tick, easily irritable noises. Almost same as Jhilmil. Do they have cognitive disabilities, yes some of them do. But it's mostly motor.

And that's my point too...What these movies show is Autism with a side diagnosis like mental disability, etc but they just brand them as Autism...For ex, SRK in MNIK is another extreme... Autism is a spectrum disorder and a lot of research has to be done before these mainstream directors just pick it up and use it as a story device...Because you see, there are real people who are having to live with it and these movies can do a lot of damage in creating wrong stereotypes... As it is life is so difficult for these blessed souls, they don't need these movies to add to their woes...

In my opinion it wasn't a stereotype. Jhilmil could easily be in the cognitive-behavioral/intellectual disability development laden autistic which is in the spectrum too. Non verbal communication through speech impairment could be one of the sides. But at the end of the day her autism is the result of most of these other sides developing as in the case of most. They fall under severe, needy-caretaker dynamic too. I don't know how filmmakers can show every spectrum there is on celluloid. Shah in MNIK had Asperger's I believe which narrowed it down a lot.

Though I don't live with anyone like that I had worked for 6 years taking care of them and their medical records and development so that's my take on this. I do agree that for the audience who doesn't know autism they might see it as such but then thats on them. The society we live in, anymore who isnt behaving like the so called norm is considered something else. Its unfortunate.
