@ThunderLight Um... SLB wasn't inspired by JA. JA was mediocre too.
SLB had been planning to make Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat since the 90s, long before JA was released. Devdas, a period film, was also made before it. Devdas is in fact considered a classic and was critically acclaimed. It's even been included in various lists of the best movies of all time.
JA wasn't even a critical success. It was filled with historical inaccuracies and was criticised heavily because of it. It was more like a fantasy film if anything 😆😆
Even Padmaavat received a lot of nominations and wins, that doesn't make it a great movie. JA and Padmaavat received those awards because of their technical aspects.
Even Mughal-e-Azam is mediocre and historical inaccurate for some - especially Karni Sena 😆. That will never change the fact that it was a Classic and Gamechanger.
Forget SLB, even Rajamouli copied some sword fighting - flirting scenes between lead and elephant scenes from Jodha Akbar.
Infact, Ashutosh never kept anything fantasy or gaudy or melodramatic in the film. From the jewellery to the simple makeup of Ash to the Forts, everything was actually subtle and realistic. He is no Bhansali to make Akbar dance to Malhari despite having the best Dancer in the country as his lead.
And fyi, Ashutosh n the Film swept all the awards that year - not just in India but also internationally. You clearly seem to have mixed up Jodha Akbar to Mohenjodaro 😆 He may be having a bad run at BO, but Ashutosh made Lagaan which was nominated under Foreign film category the Oscars. He sure knows to make films.
And whether you accept it or not, Jodha Akbar was a huge risk back then. Which is why many were asking Hrithik not to sign it as such films were never successful. Its success and response actually kickstarted the trend to make such Historicals in recent times.
