In a way I'd say it still is about that for KJo- about how period drama/historicals can or cannot make money. So he IS a badwagoner, in that sense. Only now, after he saw historicals that MADE money, did he decide to take these projects on.

Because even if he had the idea to make the movie BEFORE these movies releasing. he still considered it too risky at the time .. or not beneficial enough. Thus, he shelved the project for years.

I think when he saw how Bajirao.. then Padmavaat became such a success , he decided it's worth him investing the money into a historical .. or 3.😆

Even in these.. he is co-producing with others..so he's still making sure he's not taking all the risks on himself.
Historicals are a sinkhole for money- as you ned great costumes and action scenes, besides good script and actors./.. in order to make the movie click with audiences and succeed at BO. So maybe he wasn't sure either that he can create a great story.. or direct/produce a good one... or maybe he simply didn't think cost vs. profit was attractive enough.. before.

Doesn't make sense yet. Takht as I said, I get it. He is trying to cash on the recent historicals, and even took Ranveer.

But Kalank is something which has been in the pipeline since 90s man. I don't think SLB inspired him or his dad for that movie.
Plus he was starting to talk about making it in 2014, as I said earlier and everyone else, Ram Leela wasn't an epic, wasn't a game changer either. Nor was Jodha Akbar. It was BM grossing more than Dilwale which got the maximum hype and Padmavat becoming a blockbuster. And obviously more than these it was Bahubaali which captured everyone's attention.

I think people are just like that crediting SLB for Kalank. Takth as I already said, yes it is a work being made after success of historical and epic movies. Even took the face of Bollywood historical Ranveer for it, while dreaming to take Prabhas at first.
Kalank is being forced into this argument.

Kjo is a bandwagoner no doubt. He jumps on any successful trend to reap maximum profits from it.
So definitely, success of Bahubali, BM and Padmaavat gave him confidence to invest on period dramas.

But Kalank was his father's dream project too, and Kjo wanted to make the film for a long time. So here he ain't just following a trend. It's more like he was waiting for the right time to make the film, and now it has arrived.

Other than that, I don't think he'll follow SLB's style. And SLB ain't no original director either.

BOI did actually give JA Super Hit verdict initially. But after some years they changed it to Semi-Hit.😆

Karan is definitely doing period dramas coz they are reaping profits. Sanjay has spoken at large about how historicals were extensive part of his growing up and mughal-e-azam is not just a movie but a connect point to his dad. Watching that movie again n again was his memory with his dad and is extremely special to him. His passion for his movies can be seen in his music. A layman who has never had any formal training in music comes up with gems like laal ishq, thode badmaash or even ek dil ek jaan is no mean feat. It can only be achieved when there is insane passion involved in it. Karan is emotionally bankrupt and shallow. One thing he really excels in is business. His father was not a very successful producer and made duds after duds hence was not in the ivy league of bollywood like chopras which Karan always aspired to be. So he learnt business with passion to erase all the failure associated with his father's name and hence does exceedingly well in that coz of that drive and passion. He wants respect now as he knows no one really takes him seriously despite his success and money. But sadly he is not a creative person who wants to succeed in creative business.

I think RD Burman was his guru. He is his idol and God. He had spent sometime with him. He is also inspired from him not just for music but also for the whole filmmaking process closely seeing how much passionate Panchamda was and how deep and creative and layered he used to go. Ofcourse he can never become pancham. He is one of the kind and God gifted. Music used to come to him so casually just like that.

That is bcos the director of kalank is assistant director to Jodha akbar and the latter look work was done by him only.
