So, just curious and a little ignorant about this dual citizenship thing. I've heard US offers dual citizenship which means people have a citizenship of the country and then separately of the states. So, it doesn't offer you a chance to become citizen of another country as well as the US. Like I said, I have little knowledge so I'm all for being corrected.

I read on wiki once that there are very few countries which offer actual dual citizenship of countries but they also have many rules for it, and may not be as straightforward as it sounds.

So, if there's anybody here who knows more about it, please tell me. Which countries offer dual citizenship? Like you can be a citizen of that as well as another country? And why do they offer this? Also, while they were at it then why just dual and not multiple?

That is true with countries who allow dual citizenship. A citizen automatically renouced their citizenship should that person serves in the military or take a public service office.

Military service has always been the exception. But most dual citizenships allow voting rights and civilian public service within reason.

I have family in India, feel vested in India, and I hope that I may retire in India. So I wish that I could vote in India too. But oh well. I was in my 20's when I became a citizen here, so unlike my sister, I can't even blame my parents for losing Indian citizenship. 😆

There are two issues here.

First issue. State vs Federal. USA is a Federal Republic. Which means each state is a sovereign unit with its own constitution and set of rights. It can choose to secede from the Union (Civil War). But there is just one citizenship. Citizenship to the United States of America. There is no separate state citizenship. You can freely choose to move within the states and US territories.

Second issue. Dual citizenship. There is no specific law allowing or forbidding dual citizenship. However, unlike India which forces you to relinquish Indian citizenship if you become a citizen in any other nation, you may keep your US citizenship even if you become a citizen of another nation. A large number of US citizens are dual or even multiple citizens with countries like Canada, UK, and many European nations.

The only time you lose citizenship in USA is if you ask to relinquish it, get it revoked due to inconsistencies/fraud in your naturalization, serve in certain foreign militaries.

She most likely has work visa because she isn't actually Indian. Alia and Akshay must have OCI as are actually Indian or have Indian parents.

Aah. Makes sense. I'm always a little too blind when it comes to matters like these.

I can only tell about my friends/family experience in Australia. If we are Sri Lankan by birth, and would get Aussy citizenship we can keep 2 passports aka the original Sri Lankan passport as well as a new Australian one. That's dual citizenship.
My friends/family who r there & had kids there r naturalized Aussy citizens but their parents applied for Sri Lankan citizenship too because both countries allow to be a citizen of a 2/3/4th country as long as that other country/s allow the same. You can live, work, vote for any/either country

A close friend's story also I can share
The guy's father is British/French & mother is Spanish/Philippine and he was born in Norway. He had citizenship in Britain, France, (Norway he grew up in mostly but didn't get citizenship as they don't allow dual). He married an Italian and had a kid in Sweden.
Child is British, French, Italian, Swedish passport holder
Their next baby was born in India. And only retained British, French & Italian citizenships.

@bold The USA also does not allow their citizen to serve as a public officials in foreign lands. To do so means to revoke their citizenship.
