My friends/family who r there & had kids there r naturalized Aussy citizens but their parents applied for Sri Lankan citizenship too because both countries allow to be a citizen of a 2/3/4th country as long as that other country/s allow the same. You can live, work, vote for any/either country

A close friend's story also I can share
The guy's father is British/French & mother is Spanish/Philippine and he was born in Norway. He had citizenship in Britain, France, (Norway he grew up in mostly but didn't get citizenship as they don't allow dual). He married an Italian and had a kid in Sweden.
Child is British, French, Italian, Swedish passport holder
Their next baby was born in India. And only retained British, French & Italian citizenships.

@bold Australia does allow multiple citizenship but they limit it to people as their last citizenship. So for example, if you are a Sri Lankan and have another citizenship like Canadian or British then you decided to take Australian citizenship they will allow it. However, Australia must be the final citizenship you have. So, after taking Australia citizenship you are not allowed to apply for another citizenship, but you may retain previous existing citizenship.

There are two issues here.

First issue. State vs Federal. USA is a Federal Republic. Which means each state is a sovereign unit with its own constitution and set of rights. It can choose to secede from the Union (Civil War). But there is just one citizenship. Citizenship to the United States of America. There is no separate state citizenship. You can freely choose to move within the states and US territories.

Second issue. Dual citizenship. There is no specific law allowing or forbidding dual citizenship. However, unlike India which forces you to relinquish Indian citizenship if you become a citizen in any other nation, you may keep your US citizenship even if you become a citizen of another nation. A large number of US citizens are dual or even multiple citizens with countries like Canada, UK, and many European nations.

The only time you lose citizenship in USA is if you ask to relinquish it, get it revoked due to inconsistencies/fraud in your naturalization, serve in certain foreign militaries.

Thanks for the info, RTH! 😊

One issue, then how r the kids who would be born in Australia (to Sri Lankan parents who r either PR holders or dual Aussy/SL citizens) can apply for SL citizenship too? In fact whenever in future when I have kids we intended to do just that.. so they could live in either country.. I was under the impression it's possible..
in any case thanks for bringing this up.. gotta look it up.. lol not that I have any issues with giving up the SL one..but my husband is gonna flip if they aren't SL too! This is gonna be fun! 😆

This is for adults who apply Australian's citizenship and was naturalized. If the children of a Australian's citizen or PR is born in Australian's soil they automatically got Australian's citizenship/passport. The law differs for adults naturalized into Australian's citizenship and those who were naturally born there.

Does Canada offer it too? I heard now even trump is trying to amend the amendments regarding citizen by birth. And USA and Canada are developed countries.

AFAIK children born in UK can also claim birthright if the parents are settled in UK but not UK citisens. They introduced some limitations because people would come to UK and have a child, then go back after registering.. and claiming benefits for 18 years..
