The morning shows opened at a dismal 3-5%.

This movie better has some damn good content and WOM to survive.

But the early twitter reviews are savage. Jesus, even by the analysts and critics that were earlier promoting it and hailing its LGBTQ theme. Is it really that bad? 😕

EK LADKI KO DEKHA TOH AISA LAGA MOVIE REVIEW

Rachit Gupta, Feb 1, 2019, 01.11 PM ISTCritic's Rating: 3.5

Story:

Sweety (Sonam Kapoor) runs into Sahil Mirza (Rajkummar Rao) at a theatre in Delhi and he falls in love at first sight. While she runs away in a chase, he decides to pursue her and shifts base to Moga, Punjab. Once he proposes to Sweety, he finds out that she loves somebody else.
Review:

Love stories can get quite cliched, but when you talk about new-age romance, the conversations can get pretty interesting. Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga (ELKDTAL) is an unconventional tale of finding love and acceptance. The film employs its fair share of stereotypes to tell a modern and relevant story. The fact that it brings, a still niche subject like homosexuality, to a mainstream movie is one of its strengths. Thankfully, the progressive themes and emotional intelligence of the movie, help it rise above the lackluster screenplay.

The film starts off with the traditional boy-meets-girl setup, where Rajkummar Rao's Sahil finds himself carried away by emotion. A random, but pretty girl, Sonam Kapoor's Sweety, grabs his hand and pulls him into a chase. And the boy, as you'd expect, falls in love and sets off on a path to track the girl down and profess his undying love. Most of the film's first half is spent in setting up this rather old-fashioned portrayal of courtship. The girl's loveable, but conservative Punjabi family is also pooled in to the story as the usual Beeji (Madhumalti Kapoor), Veerji (Abhishek Duhan) and Papaji, Balbir (Anil Kapoor) bring in the quintessential family drama. The film spends a little too much time setting up the deliberate, but misleading track that is in essence, building up to Sweety's ultimate confession. Once she does come-out with the reveal that the romance between the boy and girl won't materialise, the film too, changes gears.

The second half, while still a bit predictable, engages in a sensitive and beautiful portrayal of a girl feeling trapped by her own emotions. The story's track of a father coming to terms with the sexuality and the suppressed emotions of his daughter is touching. Though a bit theatrical, ELKDTAL puts forth a progressive and important conversation around personal feelings and the true liberating nature of love. All of this plays out, in the most fun and entertaining fashion, which in a way is the strength of the movie, too.

The bulk of the entertainment comes through the performances by Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and Rajkummar Rao. Sonam K Ahuja plays the central role and while she does manage to bring in the required vulnerability to her character, she doesn't always convince you of Sweety's emotional conflict. But, some staggering performances by Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao add a veritable punch to the proceedings. The adorable romantic comedy between Kapoor and Chawla is a sure-shot winner, too. Supporting performances by Madhumalti Kapoor, Abhishek Duhan, Regina, Seema Pahwa and Brijendra Kala are all top notch.

Writer-director Shelly Chopra Dhar and co-writer Gazal Dhaliwal (who previously wrote Irrfan's Qarib Qarib Singlle) manage to spark off some pretty interesting conversations around love. Yes, their film deals with sexuality and seeking acceptance from older, more-conservative family members, but at the core, ELKDTAL talks about love being a universal feeling, one that cannot be shackled by societal norms and diktats. The writing isn't all top-grade, but this film has its heart in the right place and sometimes that's all that really matters.

Shubhra Gupta, Indian Express' film critic, wrote, "The idea is brilliant, and ensemble solid. The two who stand out are Abhishek Duhan as the brattish brother, and Regina Cassandra, who shows spark. Pity about the flaccid writing which obscures the idea and the intent. What this film needed was more sharpness, more acuity, more honesty. It could then justifiably have been called 2019 : A Love Story'."

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga movie review: Sonam Kapoor-starrer let down by flaccid writing

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga movie review: What it comes down to is this: yes, we want to make a progressive film, but we have to show our women getting freed up only after getting male approval-and-help.

This film couldn't have had a better title.

It is the mukhda' of a song made madly popular more than 30 years ago when a boy (ek ladka') saw a girl (ek ladki') and burst out into song. That film was called 1942: A Love Story, and that ladka', all grown up now, plays the grizzled father (Kapoor) in this film, to his real-life daughter (Ahuja), a lovely connection that only the movies can make happen.

More importantly, it can't get more delightfully subversive, for a movie which promises to upend the ladka-ladki' binary that Bollywood has coasted on for decades. Here ek ladki's heart beats for another ladki'. The problem is that there's more subversion in the one-line title than in the entire film, because having stated its purpose, it doesn't quite know just how to broach it and expand on it, and spends far too much stuttering time in getting to the point.

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga box office prediction: Anil and Sonam Kapoor film to earn Rs 2-3 crore on Day 1

Sweety lives in Moga, Punjab, with a genial papaji' who runs a garments factory, a veerji' (Duhan) who is a full-on Punjabi puttar', all bluster and tough love, and an affectionate grandma, who is intent on getting hold of a suitable boy for her sundar susheel' grand-daughter.

Up pops the personable Sahil Mirza (Rao) but Sweety, immersed in her dreams of her real love, won't bite. And the film gets stuck in clunky, ham-handed passages during which we get lectures on the unsuitability' of Muslims, the large-heartedness of small-town Punjabis which also includes their small-mindedness when it comes to sexual orientation.

By the time Sweety and Kuhu (Cassandra) get together in the same frame as the two lovers' who have strong feelings for each other but who just happen to be female, ki kariye', almost the entire film is over. Why so scared? Why not have more between the two young women, for which we've waited for? Why so much wringing of hands, so much talk of not normal' and wanting to be like the others'?

We have real heroes in the new season of Roadies: Rannvijay Singha

What we get are fleeting scenes in which we get a couple of kindling glances which are dispensed with alacrity, and the movie moving into the safe jocular zone of flirtation between Papaji Kapoor, and the perky Chatroji (Chawla) who is essentially playing the role of the hero's best friend.

What we also get is a permission-bearing paternalistic speech from the man of the house: another version of jaa jee le apni zindagi', except that Simran belonged to 1995. What it comes down to is this: yes, we want to make a progressive film, but we have to show our women getting freed up only after getting male approval-and-help.

Don't understand Hindi by I know BOHOT means very .. right? So they liked it?
I am guessing from English words they have liked RRR and ANIL's acting .. and say movie is not preachy !
So there's positives!

Fingers crossed it picks up in WOM... or they advertise the movie more !

My biggest concern was that they won't develop the love story and it turns out that indeed is the case which is such a shame! I wish they didn't advertise it as an unusual love story.

If they're going to make a mainstream lesbian love story then put in the effort of making the audience invest in their relationship. I don't think they've done that! Apprently Regina despite being good has very little to do.

The movie is called Ek Ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga' yet the men have more to do than the ladki'

Ek Ladki Dull - Three Way Fight At Box Office

Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga took a dull opening of 5-7.5% which is pretty much on the expected lines. The film is named after a HIT song from a flop film 1942 - A Love Story. The film is very niche and basically been made due to the recovery from digital which is 20 crore so ensures the film wont be a big financial burden on the makers but the audience is a different kettle of fish and they will not be easily pleased.

The theme of the film will have very few takers with only some section of the metro audience coming for the film. The film has no face value or stars so that is a plus as a film like this with stars could be asking for big trouble.

The banner Vinod Chopra Films and Anil Kapoor combination sent the 90's audience to sleep with two duds like Parinda (1989) and 1942 - A Love Story (1994) and it remains to be seen if results are any different in 2019.

There will be a three way fight at the box office to be the top film with Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Manikarnika and Uri - The Surgical Strike. Manikarnika had a negative response from the audience generally at a ground level though the business held up post Monday but the Delhi / UP collections cracked on the eighth day which will mean a drop in collections as that was the best circuit.

Uri - The Surgical Strike is super strong on its fourth Friday and will give the new release and Manikarnika a good fight and could turn out to be the top film.
