I was hooked to the edge of my seat cause I had only a vague idea of Temper plot, but even with what I knew this was so well made. Truly Rohit's best work yet. 👏

Wow u got me all excited I got tickets for sunday coz my 5 yr old loves cop dramas now I have something more to look forward to it. 😳

If its crisp n doesn't feel long then it will surely click. Majority movies fail coz they get tiring after a point. Glad its not the case with simmba.

That's so unfair in telangana n a.p. govt. Fixes the rates n multiplexes maximum price is 300 and single screens is 150 max. But even then I have rarely seen multiplexes charging more than 250. I think it should be same in all states. Though refreshments cost a bomb 😆 I don't buy anything from the foodcourt 😆

Simmba Movie Review: Rohit Shetty Film a Roaring Comedic Comeback

Ranveer Singh surrenders himself completely to his role and unabashedly milks the gamut of emotions essential for a true blue Hindi film hero.

Simmba
Director: Rohit Shetty
Cast: Ranveer Singh, Sara Ali Khan and Sonu Sood

Director Rohit Shetty famous for his unique blend of comedy and action, has re-discovered his mojo. Simmba, his new offering with Ranveer Singh in and as Simmba has everything you expect from a Rohit Shetty film. Shetty takes the classic Hindi film formula --which was given the heave-ho with the arrival of multiplex movies and reprises it cleverly, well... almost. Adapting the main story from the Telugu film Temper, Shetty uses the classic tropes of mainstream commercial cinema from the 70s/80s. The film's eponymous protagonist has a backstory of being a poor orphan who decides to turn into a Policewala for all the wrong reasons. Although immensely likable, Simmba is corrupt and ethically compromised. Along the film's journey, he has to contend with a grimacing villain Doorva Ranade (Sonu Sood) with evil brothers and a pretty young lady Shagun (Sara Ali Khan) whose sole purpose in the film is to be Simmba's romantic interest and of course, a misdeed (rape) that causes the ultimate change of his heart.

There is an important aside hereSimmba hails from Shivgadh, the same village as Bajirao Singham (played by Ajay Devgn), the protagonist of the film Singham.

Rohit Shetty, plays to his strengths the comic sequences in particular, are hilarious. Farhad Samji's dialogues are key to keeping the film light for the most part. But, Simmba falters in its blending of the comic, with the serious. Its attempt at being socially-relevant and send out an anti-rape message leaves a lot to be desired. The plot points get weighed down by the several nudge-nudge references to the brutal Nirbhaya case. To add to this, in the post-interval half, the dialogues lose their comic touch and turn preachy, slowing down an otherwise breezy masala entertainer. The film's heart, however, is in the right place and one must point out that Shetty has carefully steered away from the old-fashioned tacky, ham-handed treatment of showcasing crime against women. Much effort has been made to give women (in the film) a voice--a female judge (Ashwini Kalsekar), Constable Mohile's (an important support character) wife, Doorva Ranade's mother and wife among many others. The trouble is that the effort shows.

What Shetty does really well though is adding the commercial bells and whistles complete with song-dance, maar-dhaad and emotionally-charged sequences that are critical to a film driven by sheer star power. A well-calculated cameo by Ajay Devgn is designed to send the crowds in a frenzy as is a surprise appearance by a certain Veer Suryavanshi (a superstar addition that sets the stage for an even bigger sequel) at the end. The seeds for the next edition of Simmba have already been sown. Sara Ali Khan, a confident new addition to the Hindi film heroine category will benefit from being part of this film that threatens to become a massive franchise.

However, Simmba (played flawlessly by Ranveer Singh... but more on that later) ultimately works because Shetty is able to draw fantastic performances from Singh and the supporting cast comprising Ashutosh Rana as Constable Mohile and Siddharth Jadhav as Tawade. To this end, Rana, as the upright conscience keeper and Jadhav meant primarily to add to the comic element are effective in livening up the proceedings. Mohile's constant refusal to salute Simmba because of his corrupt ways provides many a comic moment and is a nice touch.

Ranveer Singh surrenders himself completely to his role and unabashedly milks the gamut of emotions essential for a true blue Hindi film herofrom rib-tickling comedy, bone-breaking action to intense emotional momentswith consummate ease. Among the younger generation stars now vying to transition from an urban metropolitan appeal to a mass, panIndia acceptance, Singh appears to be a frontrunner and if you watch Simmba, you will know why. The reactions from the crowdchuckles and laughter- from the moment Singh enters the frame indicate a radical shift from the time that he made his debut. It is evident that his cultivation of an off-screen persona with over-the-top gestures, outlandish fashion statements is working like a charm.

At the press screening where I saw the film, Singh made an appearance in the theatre during intermissioncreating hysteria among the otherwise stiff-upper-lipped members of the media. As he posed for photos, embracing strangers with abandon and indulging everyone's fan-moment, it was quite evident that people from all walks of life have embraced him too as their new heart-throb.

Simmba- the film, undoubtedly, will benefit from this embrace and will add up to magical numbers, taking Ranveer Singh to the new stratosphere of stardom, where he clearly belongs.

'Simmba' Review: Ranveer Singh-Rohit Shetty's repackaged 80's masala is super fun

Simmba

Simmba Ranveer Singh as Sangram Bhalerao

WRITTEN BY

Updated: Dec 28, 2018, 10:36 AM IST

Film: Simmba

Genre: Action-Comedy-Drama

Cast: Ranveer Singh, Sara Ali Khan, Sonu Sood and Ajay Devgn (special appearance)

Direction: Rohit Shetty

Written by: Yunus Sajawal and Sajid Samji

Duration: 2 hours 39 minutes

Language: Hindi (U/A)

Critic's Rating: 3.5/5

Story:

Adapted from the Telugu hit Temper (2015), the story revolves around Sangram 'Simmba' Bhalerao (Ranveer), an orphan from Shivgadh, where DCP Bajirao Singham (Ajay) was raised. In sharp contrast to the senior super cop, this cub Simmba is hot-headed, unscrupulous and greedy. Of course, his avariciousness comes with a rider. He will not condone drugs, rape or atrocities against women. Wowsie! There's some hope for India. So, when apna Simmba has to take on the influential goonda Dhurva Ranade (Sonu Sood), he does so in Hindi-film style. Police Zindabad!

Review:

Rohit Shetty, in whose cinema everything is larger-than-life, gives this film a comic book treatment. Desi Marvel, anyone? The only point worth deliberating over here is -- whether we should be telling our children about rape and drugs? Guess the answer is in the question. 10-year-olds know both evils exist and see enough of it on the news channels.

Anyway, Shetty's hero is the caricaturish cop Simmba, who is completely OTT (over the top) in the first half. The low on morals, high on testosterone type. He chases goons for miles, sings a song in between, beats up baddies and just when everyone has gathered their breath, he demands a 'cut'. He speaks English that is borrowed from Akshay Kumar in Rowdy Rathore and Shahid Kapoor in R...Rajkumar. The lowbrow 'mind is blowing' stuff. Never you mind! This cop is initially cloned from Salman Khan in Dabangg, with swag et al. Fortunately for him in our immoral country, Simmba is given a hero's welcome everywhere and even treated with reverence. Digest this; Sangram, who is pyaar ka bhooka, goes around getting himself adopted by the neighbourhood aunty, uncle and girls -- who either make him their son or their brother! Cho Chweet! Told you this is comic-book stuff and is inadvertently comic too.

The travails of Simmba continue unchecked till the antagonist, Dhurva's brothers -- two anonymous scowls -- rape a young pretty thing who threatens to expose their drug dealings. Lucky for her, she is one of Simmba's many adopted sisters and her misfortune awakens his sleeping conscience. You don't need to be Einstein to guess what comes next. The bad cop becomes the Avenger. At every juncture, he thwarts/trashes the villains and against a background score that goes -- Aala Re Aala, Simmba Aala -- punctuated with Police, Police, Police, the khaki vigilante stuff begins. Nothing is new here. But then, nothing is new in our country, say the filmmakers. The Nirbhaya rape (2012) was followed by another 1,80,000 rape cases in the following five years say the statistics. Believe it or not, we are going to need many more Simmbas to rescue our depraved community. Rohit Shetty knows this. In fact, when one he falls short of one super cop, he brings in the dashing Singham to join forces with Simmba. Is your head reeling? Why complain? Everything should be digested with the same amount of disbelief that you have while reading your favourite Phantom series.

Of the performances, Ranveer is loud pre-interval because he is following instructions to the 'T'. In the second half, they have to show him muted, so you can tell, he has been specifically asked to play to the galleries initially. Hello, but please wait. There is no taking away from the fact that Ranveer does his stuff with aplomb. This is one Lion Cub who will definitely be joining the ranks of a Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn eventually. Speaking of Devgn, his cameo here is superb. In 20-minutes flat, he shows you the clear demarcation between the stuff that separates the men from the boys.

Shagun (Sara Ali Khan) has a thankless part and two songs. Of the two ditties, Aankh Marey is electrifying and is already the season's party anthem.

Sonu Sood's stab at villainy is fantastic. At one point, he has two heroes taking him on. The physical and acting strength that he displays is worth applauding. Ceetis galore actually!

Verdict:

Simmba is tried and tested 80s Bollywood formula. But what the hell? If redux songs can be a super hit, retelling formula, 1000-times-over can also be super fun. Go for Simmba with a whistle and a packet of kurkure. This is masala, just ENJOY!

Critical opinion on a Rohit Shetty film may vary wildly, simply because it is a masala entertainer where one expects the magic on screen, the magic of entertainment, albeit, sans rationality, and that is where the opinions differ.

Some may find "Simmba" silly to a point but overall, most would agree that this film is pretty good, artistic and a bonafide comedic masterwork; produced as a matter of form but not-without-its-innovations and pleasures.

The film is about a cocky, orphan Sangram Bhalerao (Ranveer Singh) from Shivgad, who grows up to be a corrupt police officer. It is his journey from being a bad man-of-the-law to a good one.

Picking up nuggets from real life events, the film mirrors society. If the first half is light and frothy that evokes constant laughter, the second half is equally intense and serious. It delivers middle-class life lessons in a blatantly effective manner.

What really engages you in this over-stretched film are Rohit Shetty's characteristic melodrama and over-the-top comedy, fast-paced action sequences, witty dialogues replete with puns and spontaneous performances by its ace cast.

Ranveer Singh as Sangram Bhalerao aka Simmba is the lifeline of the film. He carries the burden of being the corrupt police officer squarely on his shoulders and he portrays Sangram effortlessly. He is charismatic and charming as he forges new relationships or draws horns with the antagonist Dhruva Ranade (Sonu Sood). His cockiness hits an all-time high when he tells Dhruva, "Je mala mahit nahin, te mala sangh," which means, tell me something, I don't know.

Sonu Sood as Dhruva Ranade is formidable. He has his moments when he shines but is not outstanding. With a miniscule role as Simmba's love interest, Sara Ali Khan is lost in the narrative. She hardly has anything to do in the film.

Ashutosh Rana as the righteous head constable Mohile is intense and Siddharth Jadhav with an expressive visage as Constable Santosh Tawde is comical. The rest of the supporting cast deliver sincerely.

The script loosely adapted from the Telugu film "Temper", is actually a spin-off of Shetty's previous franchise, "Singham". What's commendable about the script is how the writers have effortlessly weaved in "Singham" into the narrative. So you do get to see a good chunk of Ajay Devgan delivering his distinctive action stuff.

The film has ace technical values with excellent production values, brilliant cinematography, skilfully choreographed action sequences, fine editing and intensely dazzling background score. The songs mesh seamlessly into the narrative. They are melodious with catchy tunes and are well picturised.

While the film ends on a high note with the criminals being condemned, no matter how sentimental and selfless the reasons behind it, a crime is a crime, and covering it up implicates everybody in the corruption and that's where the thinking classes' opinion differ - Singham appears flawed.

But overall, "Simmba" shines and the film is worth your ticket price.

SIMMBA Movie Review : Ranveer Singh excels in the entertainer of the year

SIMMBA movie review is out. The much awaited bollywood masala starring Ranveer Singh helmed by Rohit Shetty also has Sonu Sood, Ashutosh Rana and Siddhartha Jadhav. Sara Ali Khan plays Ranveer Singh's love interest in the third installment of the popular SINGHAM franchise that starred Ajay Devgn. Is SIMMBA the mass entertainer as expected?, find out in the review of SIMMBA below...

Major Highlights
After Salman Khan as Chulbul Pandey, Ajay Devgn as Bajirao Singham, Bollywood has another massy crowd pleasing cop in Ranveer Singh as SIMMBA. Rohit Shetty makes ways for SIMMBA into the hearts and minds of the audience in the way he knows and is at his best - a true blue, pounding, action packed, massy masala roar, SIMMBA is the entertainment, the escapism without the opium which we needed the most.

Clap worthy, seeti bajao moments?
Plenty right from the beginning till the end.

Most Important?
Don't leave the beginning and we are sure at the end you will be elated with an overwhelming surprise.

What is SIMMBA? sequel, prequel or a spinoff of SINGHAM?
SIMMBA is a franchise that takes the core element of Ajay Devgn starrer SINGHAM - to develop its protagonist Sangram Bhalerao aka 'Simmba' played by Ranveer Singh.

The most striking and major lesson to learn from Rohit Shetty in SIMMBA?
A Bollywood masala entertainer, designed to please masses and earn money revolves around a corrupt cop, a local goonda, drugs, Goa is the setting, it has a message against the culprits of the heinous crime - rape and still no item number, no foul language, action striking but not at all gory, hardly any blood. You don't always need to be spreading blood, utter gallis, and show skin to attract the attention of the masses. Rohit Shetty easily manages to skip item numbers, blood gore, galli galore which could have been easily used without any fear or danger and he makes it suitable for a family outing. This needs an expertise, its not just pasting pleasing buffoonery.

The Plot
An orphan Sangram 'Simmba' Bhalerao (Ranveer Singh) born in Shivgadh - the home town of Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn). Contrary to the honest and iconic Bajirao Singham, Simmba desires to use the power of the police force to earn money and acquire all the riches. The corrupt, manipulative and pleasingly kamina Simmba gets transferred to Goa (Miramaar) and he starts wagging his tail for the local gangster Durva Ranade (Sonu Sood). Things are going good for the evil nexus between crime and law but one day, a devastating incident sees a paradigm transformation, a massive change of heart from the greedy, cunning, manipulative and 'kamina' SIMMBA to a man of right virtues who develops the courage to stand against the powerful Durva and sends a threatening message to the culprits of the world's most heinous crime - rape.

Comparison between SIMMBA, SINGHAM, SINGHAM RETURNS?
SINGHAM was the beginning of the franchise, the first prayer from the devotee of cinema from yore - Rohit Shetty who paid tribute to righteous, rebellious and fearless cop idolized by the icon for the icons - Amitabh Bachchan in ZANJEER as Inspector Vijay, SINGHAM RETURNS was an extension while SIMMBA is the amalgamation of the all the popular and populist elements seen in Bollywood masala genre twined with a quirky, funny, corrupt cop that winks at a relevant and important issue concerning the women in our society.

Writing/dialogues
Yunus Sajawal and Sajid Samji have written an entertainer right from the word go... it's a well written crowd pleaser that puts entertainment before logic and it's not an easy job to get the buffoonery right at most of the times. Dialogues are the major highlight.

How is Ranveer Singh as SIMMBA?
Ranveer Singh is an actor par excellence, the energy, exuberance and the terrific capacity to get into the ease of a character is mind blowing indeed. He can play Khilji in PADMAAVAT and send shivers down your spine and as SIMMBA he can make you smile, laugh, dance and roar together in perhaps his best mass appealing act till date. The Marathi accent and dialect which he mastered in BAJIRAO MASTANI, comes to good use in his portrayal as a corrupt Marathi cop from Shivgadh Maharashtra. Ranveer Singh from an actor turns into an entertainer and that's not a mean achievement to change your shades like a chameleon on screen at a snap and that too with utter conviction. Paisa vassol act, (value for money).

Sonu Sood
Sonu Sood has played villain in DABANGG, R... RAJKUMAR and it must be said that in SIMMBA, Sonu Sood gives his most controlled, restrained and composed performance as the cunning and wicked Durva Ranade.

Performances by other supporting actors in SIMMBA

Ashutosh Rana as the honest senior constable is terrific. Siddharth Jadhav is class apart. Ashwini Kalsekar excels. Ganesh Yadav is fine. Ashok Samarth is very good, Saurabh Gokhale is fantastic. Sarita Joshi is good.

Sara Ali Khan
Ironically, the talented Sara Ali Khan is wasted and reduced to a dabba wali in this escapist adage on women empowerment.

Does Ajay Devgn - the original SINGHAM have an appearance?
This is not a spoiler. Believe me!!, when Ajay Devgn aka Bajirao Singham appears on screen, it's the moment of tremendous joy and testimony that no matter what, the action masala entertainers, the cinema of yore is the entertainment to the core at any era, time. Provided it's done with the passion and conviction the way Rohit Shetty does today, as his gurus - ManMohan Desai, Prakash Mehra, Yash Chopra, etc. had done before. The cinema screens especially in single screens are bound to erupt when Ajay Devgn makes his entry. Clap, clap.

How has Rohit Shetty directed SIMMBA?
Rohit Shetty is the rare breed of director who can read the pulse of the money paying audience. He knows his cinema and is proud to be the follower of the 70's, 80's action, comedy, masala yore. The influence is evident and the way he does it needs mastery. Whatever be the reaction of naysayers, no matter how escapist, over the top, loud it seems but the important message - supporting capital punishment for rapist gets delivered to the masses.

How true are the reports of SIMMBA having similarities with NTR's TEMPER?
Yes, certain elements are inspired and some action scenes are inspired/borrowed, but SIMMBA establishes its identity in due course.

Action
The action is not brutal and unpleasant, its massy and clap worthy.

Technicalities
Jomon T John's cinematography is eye pleasing, Bunty Nagi editing is as desired.

Music
'Aankh Marey' sung by Mika Singh, Neha Kakkar, Kumar Sanu recreated by Tanishk Bagchi is already a winner. 'Aala Re Aala' by Tanishk Bagchi sung by Dev Negi, and Goldie has turned out to be quite peppy on screen.

Flipside
You know it already but still - SIMMBA is primarily designed for the lovers of massy masala entertainers, the prime reason for the audience to visit theatres. Naysayers as said earlier will complain of having the same clich commercial masala massy entertainer to deliver an easy going, escapist, solution to the culprits of the most heinous crime. Scripting the movie at convenience and will, bringing things, elements, turns right on the face. Sheer buffoonery, lack of realism and more...

Is SIMMBA worth watching?
Keeping its loyalties intact to 'Rohit Shetty', 'SINGHAM' brand of entertainment inspired from cinemas of yore, SINGHAM proved that the combo of Ajay Devgn and Rohit Shetty is another spelling of success. SIMMBA adds another adjective to it, the combo of Ranveer Singh and Rohit Shetty is also equally lethal from now on. With Ajay Devgn coming in with his deadly brawn, SIMMBA gains the winning sharp edge and hits the bull's eye. Delivering exactly what the entertainment hungry souls of Bollywood wants. Rohit Shetty has left no stone unturned to keep its target audience satisfied. SIMMBA is entertainment at last, by large. Roar (go) for it.
