Oh,I give it 4.5. The best masala entertainer I have seen yet hands down. It did not feel long because first half was comedy and fun and romance while 2nd half was serious and gripping. I was hooked to the edge of my seat cause I had only a vague idea of Temper plot, but even with what I knew this was so well made. Truly Rohit's best work yet.👏

Simbaa Has Good Opening

Simmba took a good opening of around 35% which is a little better than last weeks Zero. The film has the blockbuster ticket rate pricing like Sanju, Thugs Of Hindostan and Zero at multiplexes which has meant the film has bulit huge capacity like the films above. Normally you would be comparing the opening of this film with a Baaghi 2 which is similar as far as casting goes though Simbaa has a much bigger director but ticket pricing is at a completely different level to Baaghi 2
The difference between Zero and Simmba is basically the the Mumbai belt. Zero could not really take off in Gujarat at all which meant first day collections in Mumbai circuit of just 5 crore nett apprx but here Simbaa is on course to do 7 or even 8 crore nett due to a strong response in Maharashtra and Gujarat.
Most of the other circuits will be mainly lower to Zero unless there is a solid upturn in the evening but the gaps will be minimal maybe 10-15% with Simbaa even ahead in the likes of CP Berar and CI. If the first day figure of Simbaa comes out ahead of Zero it will be mainly down to Mumbai circuit which is 40-50% better than Zero.

The film should beat the opening day collection of Padmaavat even though it has opened to lower occupancy than that film. Padmaavat had many release issues which meant it could could not open in many places but took a good opening wherever it opened.
It should emerge the best opening day of Ranveer Singh in terms of collections but like Zero it will be Saturday and Sunday that is crucial because the opening is good but its not huge which makes the trend very important. The hope will be this film goes upwards over the weekend rather than the downward trend of Zero. If the families come on Sunday it will mean a good end to the year.
The opening of the film is best in Western and Central India with UP and Bihar also recording good numbers. Delhi, Punjab, Kolkatta and Bangalore are average but the evening collections could improve especially in the Delhi NCR belt which tends to be strong in the Fri-Sun period over Xmas and New Year.

Simmba Movie Review: Ranveer Singh And Sara Ali Khan Star In Another Exaggerated Cop Drama

Simmba Movie Review: Ranveer Singh And Sara Ali Khan Star In Another Exaggerated Cop Drama

Simmba Movie Review: Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan in a film still. (Image courtesy: Instagram)

Cast: Ranveer Singh, Sara Ali Khan, Sonu Sood, Ashutosh Rana

Director: Rohit Shetty

Rating: 2 Stars (Out of 5)

Got to hand it to Rohit Shetty. His lack of pretention is disarming. His films demand willing suspension not just of disbelief, but also of discernment. But how much one warms up to the excesses of an incessantly roaring Simmba will depend wholly on the extent of our willingness to jettison our critical faculties.

The vigilante action drama is about a cavalier police inspector (Ranveer Singh) who thinks nothing of arm-twisting criminals into coughing up money. He is loved by all his subordinates in Goa's Miramar police station with the exception of a seasoned head constable, Nityanand Mohile (Ashutosh Rana). The cynical lawman mends his ways in dramatic circumstances - a teenage girl is sexually assaulted and he takes up cudgels on behalf of her distraught father.

Simmba Movie Review: Ranveer Singh in a film still. (Image courtesy Instagram)

Needless to say, the lead actor lets it rip with infectious enthusiasm. Ranveer's energy levels come in handy as Shetty goes all out to deliver another exaggerated variation on the crusading cop theme. The hero's no-holds-barred confrontations with the baddies led by a natty Sonu Sood, playing a politically connected crimelord, are presented with crowd-pleasing flourish.

To begin with, Ranveer's character, Sangram Bhalerao aka Simmba, an orphan who has come up in life the hard way, is wild and wayward a la Chulbul Pandey. He exploits the power bestowed on him by his starched uniform to line his pockets. He is a lovable rogue. But that is hardly surprising: a masala movie hero always has got to be allowed greater leeway with ethics and fair play than lesser mortals. And when Ranveer is the one in the aforementioned guise, it is even more difficult to dislike his.

But when push comes to shove, he quickly mutates into an unstoppable force of nature in the mould of Bajirao Singham, who, incidentally, makes an appearance to bail out the man when the chips are down. Ranveer is in his elements in both modes but his tendency not to ever temper his enthusiasm robs the film of the chance to deliver any nuanced moments. The film and its protagonist gallop from one big scene to another. Those that can relate to this kind of a-mile-a-minute momentum, the film will work just fine notwithstanding the mawkish, preachy tone it assumes in the lead-up to the climax. But if you are looking for breathing spaces, banish that hope forthwith.

Caught between Rohit Shetty's flashy style and Ranveer Singh's pure physicality, Sara Ali Khan receives short shrift. That's a pity.

Movie Review: Simmba

Simmba (Ranveer Singh) is an orphan from Shivgadh, the native town of brave and honest cop Singham (Ajay Devgn). But Simmba doesn't believe in Singham's ideals. The way he sees it, cops have it easy as everyone gives them a cut. He works hard towards being a cop, gets posted in Shivgadh itself and sets about extorting money from all and sundry. He gets transferred to another police station, where he joins hands with the local goon Ranade (Sonu Sood) and starts minting money. He meets with a girl Shagun (Sara Ali Khan), who runs a tiffin service outside the police station and starts dreaming of marrying her. Life's all hunky dory for the hunk alright. At this point, Ranade's younger brothers rape and kill a girl Simmba considers as his younger sister. The incident shakes him up from the inside. His conscience gets awakened and he vows to avenge her death. How he goes about doing it forms the crux of the story.

The first half of the film is different from the second half. While the first part is light and breezy and is full of laugh-out-loud moments, the second part becomes serious and preachy. The tonal shift from a broad comedy to a film that that champions the cause of women safety is a tad jarring. The pace too gets stilted somewhat. You get the feeling that perhaps tighter editing was the order of the day in some places.

If Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the director who made Ranveer into an actor having a cupboard full of awards, Rohit Shetty is the person who will be credited with turning him into a massy hero. Because the film is as massy as they come. The punch dialogue, slow motion action, quirky dance moves -- it's all there and more. And Ranveer takes to this new avatar like fish to water. Simmba is a complete OTT character on paper and Ranveer takes it up a notch higher through his performance. He summons up the spirit of Jim Carrey, making faces, speaking in different voices, being cocky as hell all the time and wisecracking with aplomb. He's good in the emotional scenes as well. You feel entertained whenever he's around and that's what counts, never mind the implausibility of some of the scenes. Sara Ali Khan, who made a super confident debut with Kedarnath, looks completely at ease in a Rohit Shetty set up as well. She matches Ranveer toe-to-toe in dance sequences and shares a easy camaraderie with him. Though her role isn't that big in what's primarily an action comedy. She has shown us she's a natural and now needs author-backed roles to showcase her talents further. Ashutosh Rana, not seen much on the silver screen nowadays, plays an honest constable, something of a conscience keeper for Ranveer and does a good job of it. The scene where they both get drunk is a hoot.

This is perhaps the only Rohit Shetty film where cars don't fly in the air, though the rest of his trademark action and stunts are all there. On the lines of Marvel or DC's superhero universes, he's trying to built a cop universe of sorts and cameos by Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar as policemen proves that. It's a bold move by the director and it would be interesting to see how it unfolds in the future...
