Sui Dhaaga' Movie Review: Mamta and Mauji will win your heart with their fight against all odds

Sameer Jhaon September 28, 2018

Directed By: Sharat Katariya
Produced By: Maneesh Sharma, Aditya Chopra
Cast: Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma
Duration: 2 hrs 2 mins
Bollywood Bubble Rating: 4/5

In the beginning, Varun Dhawan (Mauji) plays a character who earns his bread by acting like a dog, monkey, bull and a bear. All of this, to keep his bosses entertained. He takes insults left, right and centre but still manages to smile, because he feels that his Boss is entitled to harassing him. After all, he pays him a salary. Anushka Sharma (Mamta) sees this and encourages him to quit, because it's better to earn a little less than lead a life full of disrespect. So taking her advice, Mauji quits his job and starts his own business with Mamta. The couple face numerous challenges, but one by one, they manage to overcome all of them.

There are a lot of heartbreaking moments Mauji has to cycle with a badly injured foot, Mamta has to give a sewing test that she is not prepared for and people in general are hellbent on making their life difficult. What makes this film a winner all the way is that it manages to keep the story extremely realistic, without being dull or slow. Both Varun and Anushka give ace performances, and you could watch the movie a second time just to observe how well they have emoted with their eyes. Anushka's performance stands out because it is so unlike her other roles. Mamta is so unlike Anushka, and it's impressive how she manages to imbibe Mamta's psyche and her body language.

This is a heartfelt underdog story, where two people fight against all odds to emerge victorious. Yes, the climax is a little too idealistic, but this writer wouldn't have it any other way. As for the songs, they are extremely well composed by Anu Malik. They don't interfere with the screenplay at all, and have inspiring lyrics that can help you cope during difficult times.

Without a doubt, this movie's life will not be restricted to how long it runs in the theatres. It's going to be remembered for a long time for genuine emotions don't come with an expiry date. As for its message, it does manage to inspire you to start your own business, but at the same time, also brings you face to face with the challenges involved. It's great that established actors like Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma are moving beyond ripped abs and party songs, and telling stories that society needs.

Watch this film with your family, and keep those tissues handy.

Watched the morning show of sui dhaaga...friends forced.😭
Should not have i guess. Almost went to sleep.
Nothing happens in the film much. Humiliated at work...wife does drama...family drama...new entrepreneur...some difficulty...dum laga ke haisha type contest angle...and suddenly designer.

Anushka was for the first time after bombay velvet IMO really bad in a movie.
VD was okay types. Had a hard time controlling his hero type acting. Looked ordinary enough to pass off as mauji.

Overall waste of time according to me.yawnfest. songs were also very boring.

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma's film isn't extraordinary but still Sab Badhiya Hai'

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: Anushka Sharma and Varun Dhawan's film doesn't boast about being perfect. It has flaws yet it manages to tug at your heartstrings.

  • Movie Name:Sui Dhaaga- Made In India
  • Critics Rating:3/5
  • Release Date: 28-09-2018
  • Director: Sharat Katariya
  • Genre: Drama

Three years after Dum Laga Ke Haisha, the storyteller Sharat Katariya came out with yet another neighbourhood tale Sui Dhaaga starring Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma. Just like the previous venture, this film is also based around a similar premise of a lower-middle class family who struggles to keep their heads above the water. The treatment remains the same; truthful, tasteful and original. Sui Dhaaga is as raw as it gets, without any decoration or deviation from truth which many of our Bollywood flicks superfluously demonstrate.

Sui Dhaaga gets right to the point within five minutes of its start. Mauji (Varun Dhawan) belongs to a family of former artisans who pulled their hands away from sewing machine after machine-made clothes made it to the market. Fearing the debts and meager income, the entire neighbourhood skilled in the art of silk block print, turns to alternative livelihood. Mauji does odd jobs at shops and in turn, gets humiliated day in and day out by his masters. His wife Mamta (Anushka Sharma), who on contrary is careful about their self-respect, asks her husband to quit the job and do something which he's an expert in: making clothes. From thereon, Mauji and Mamta embark on a journey to set up their own clothing line- Sui Dhaaga.

The best part of Sui Dhaaga is its speed. The film is over-speeding right from the word go and we're not even complaining about it. It gets straight to the point without beating around the bush. The audience is introduced to its principal characters in just a couple of minutes. Time is the key in Sui Dhaaga and so Sharat Katariya didn't bother to waste a single minute stressing on redundant love stories or songs. Even the songs are picturized in a manner that they didn't take unnecessary place in the film. Throughout its 120 minutes of runtime, which is quite short for a Bollywood film, you'll not feel distracted or jaded.

When we're talking about a Bollywood film which gyrates around a poor man's dream, we assume that it's going to have overflowing melodrama and lots of emotional outbursts. However, Sui Dhaaga stands apart from that league of films. The emotions are in right proportions; neither too less to make it stone cold nor too abundant to make it look like a fictional story. Mamta and Mauji are as expressive as they should be. Even Mamta, who is married off to a man who's not making a good living for himself, isn't overdramatic. She's calm, composed and daring enough to let her husband quit his job.

The climax of the film is not stretched unlike most of the inspirational films. There's not a single monologue (Suprisingly!). Everything takes place in its usual course. It can be a disappointment for those who love the last 15 minutes of melodrama and rush in a Bollywood film. But Sui Dhaaga is definitely not one of them.

Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma in Sui Dhaaga

Talking about the acting part, it would be unfair to say that it's a Varun Dhawan film or an Anushka Sharma film. Both are well-performing their respective parts. Nobody steals the limelight from the others. Every single character of the film, right from Mauji's mother to the wolfish Guddu, get their fair share of screen time.

India Tv - Varun Dhawan in Sui Dhaaga

Varun Dhawan in Sui Dhaaga

Varun Dhawan has delivered his third content-driven film throughout his filmy career and nobody could say that the guy is not made for such films. We already saw his acting prowess in Shoojit Sircar's film October and he has once again made a point that he's an actor not only a number-churning hero. There will be more Judwaa 2, Tu Mera Hero and Dishoom for him in the future. But we do hope that Varun will keep doing films like October and Sui Dhaaga.

India Tv - Anushka Sharma in Sui Dhaaga

Anushka Sharma in Sui Dhaaga

Anushka Sharma was a surprise package. We were doubtful if she would be able to pull off Mamta as she should. In fact, she herself was doubtful about whether she should take the role or not. We are glad she believed in herself and took the role. The dialect didn't seem forced or stuffed. It looked like it came naturally from her mouth. Kudos to the costume and makeup, it was hard to tell if this coy Mamta is really Anushka Sharma. On the acting part, she nailed it. In fact, her role has panned out really well in the film. Also, her choice of films should also be appreciated. Go watch the film and you'll know why Anushka agreed to do it.

Coming to Varun Dhawan, we would say only one thing- SAB BADHIYA HAI! Right from his costume, to his language, to his body language, everything was on point. The handsome hunk Varun Dhawan was nowhere to be seen and we're happy that he hid it somewhere for some time.

The supporting roles were sketched perfectly. Raghuvir Yadav takes the cake here. The credit goes to Sharat Katariya for doing the casting right. The Peepli Live actor did his part so well that it was a treat to watch the funny banter between him and his onscreen wife in the film. The actress who played Mauji's mother in the film also managed to get some laughs through her gullible yet cute character.

However, Sui Dhaaga wasn't a smooth ride. It did hit a roadblock or two after the second half began. The part where Mauji and Mamta begin working under a self-proclaimed US-returned designer looked stretched. The film could've gone easily without emphasising on that part. A simple brush-through that portion of the story could've sufficed.

Rest, Sab Badhiya Hai!

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: Anushka Sharma, Varun Dhawan's Film is Over Dramatic but Enjoyable

Sui Dhaaga - Made In India has a good vibe that's full of hope.

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: Anushka Sharma, Varun Dhawan's Film is Over Dramatic but EnjoyableSui Dhaaga
Cast: Anushka Sharma, Varun Dhawan, Raghuvir Yadav
Director: Sharat Katariya
Mamta (Anushka Sharma) and Mauji (Varun Dhawan) have been married for quite some time, but there is hardly any chemistry between them, leave aside biology. Most of the time, Mamta is either fetching water from outside the house or is making tea for her father-in-law, played by Raghuvir Yadav. On the other hand, Mauji is busy playing the lapdog to his employers, the Bansals, who own a shop in the heart of a big city.

Though the director, Sharat Katariya, hasn't named the places, it's evident he is talking about Delhi and Ghaziabad. This could be any city's story though.
Mamta and Mauji show basic respect for each other, a must deliverable for married couples in traditional social set-up in India. Even then they have a lot to explore together; incidentally, they haven't yet touched each other, informs the opening voice-over in the film. So, when Mamta sees Mauji happily playing a dog during a party at the Bansals, she gets heartbroken. Despite being on the wrong side of the line of poverty, she never expected this. She can still put up with this, but Mauji's inability to see anything problematic in his actions devastates her from inside.

In fact, if you take a look at Karatiya's last directorial, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, you'll find the female lead's desire to live a dignified life playing a significant role in the development of the characters around her. Like Sandhya, Mamta is not ready to strip herself of the basic respect one deserves. She isn't as skillful as Mauji, but she is ready to lend him the support he requires. Her pain is channelised in her dialogue when she meekly retorts, "Yahi sab aata hai kya aapko (Do you know only this?), in response to Mauji's emotionally charged question, "Toh kya circus me bharti ho jaun (Should I join the circus?).

The set-up couldn't be simpler. There's a retired father, who has never been anything more than a wallflower, and a mother whose only wish is to get two buckets of water before the municipality stops the supply for the day. They keep mumbling to themselves and don't know from where there next meal will come from in the hours of crisis. They have never known the value of hope and dreams.

This is where Katariya's film starts to take a concrete shape. Here's a woman who is ready to give it all up for her husband, whom she thinks is skillful enough to run his own show. She is quite aware of her own self as well. In a scene when Mauji gets agitated and talks about his hard work, she humbly reminds him that they are together into this.

It's that part of the society which isn't as aspirational as the educated middle class living and thriving in mega cities. Katariya's people are struggling to make the ends meet but they can sense opportunities.
Unfortunately, these opportunities come too fast and too abruptly in Sui Dhaaga. At times, you'll feel that they are having it too easy and in real life, things might not be as dramatic as they are in the film. Not to spill the beans, but important aspects like the generation of fund to start a company have been kept out of the screenplay. The lead actors seem facing difficulty to adjust to their surroundings. The casting of support cast, especially their clothing and make-up, is spot on. Raghuvir Yadav, in one of the final scenes, will charm you the way only he can.

Actually, Sui Dhaaga has been conceived well. It tries to include what's been left by the mainstream filmmaking for years. In my opinion, its biggest success is the simplicity of idea. It's not exactly a success if it doesn't reach to the bottom.

Varun Dhawan surprises with his willingness to take risks. Who would have thought he could play a docile character with such ease? He weaves his suits and charm with equal finesse. Anushka Sharma holds her own and never lets anyone snatch her spotlight.

At 122 minutes, Sui Dhaaga is endearing for sure.
