2018 for Varun has been diamertically opposite of 2017..

Eveyrone delivered a dud last year and he had two super hits ..Everyone is delivering a hit this year and he has failed to give a single clean hit.

Review: Sui Dhaaga is a winner

September 28, 2018 16:17 IST

No overblown drama, no weepy speech, Sui Dhaaga's sunshine spirit and throwaway nok jhonk pervades the uncertainty and exploitation, feels Sukanya Verma.

Anushka Sharma's contorted, crying face became the subject of wholehearted parody in a series of viral memes. But the same scene left me in tears on watching Sui Dhaaga: Made In India.

In the movie, it is a moment of minor triumph for a husband and wife in the throes of desperation and despair.

For that brief instant, nobody except the two recognise the value of an opportunity almost lost and no World Cup can seem as precious as an arduously won sewing machine.

Writer and director Sharat Katariya's new drama delivers reality, its beauty and bites with a touch of humour, warmth and purpose in the tradition of Dum Laga Ke Haisha.

In Sui Dhaaga too, household bustle and familial tiffs form the core of a joint family of limited means.

Somewhere in Madhya Pradesh resides an elderly couple whose one half (Raghuvir Yadav) is a cantankerous old man coming down hard on the compliant son and the other (Yamini Dass) is a nurturing homemaker so consumed by her daily chores they have become her sole identity.

'Pateela lekar maregi?' inquires her irate husband when she collapses in the kitchen, still tightly holding on to the panhandle even after what seems to be a mild heart attack.

The younger couple in the house -- son Mauji (Varun Dhawan) and his significant other Mamta (Anushka Sharma) have forgotten what it feels like to be a couple in their fulfillment of domestic duties.

When Mauji, a tailor by lineage relegated to a minion in a sewing machines shop, alters Mamta's blouse for a family function, a shy smile lights her face.

It is the closest thing to a touch.

Mauji is the sort of person who agrees to belittling antics just to please the bosses.

He is half convinced it is entertaining too.

'Sab badhiya hai', he insists in the ironic tone of 'Brutus is an honourable man'. It is not.

Taken for a pushover and butt of ridicule by everyone around him, it is only after Mamta voices her hurt over the humiliation that the seeds of self-respect are sown.

Self-employment appears to be the key.

Except small-town aspirations are often weighed down by a constant need for survival.

With financial challenges and unmasked exploitation obstructing their path at every juncture, professional autonomy is hard to come by.

The focus isn't so much on Mauji's craft as his struggle for better life as well as Mamta's support and guidance in empowering their vision.

Katariya goes for a beloved movie trope where triumph of spirit and contests go hand in hand.

Sui Dhaaga advances from the marriage of industrious minds to a Lagaan of the sartorial world.

Within its feel-good fervour, Sui Dhaaga touches on the difficulties of grass root labour -- the tribulations, rotten deals and measly remuneration reserved for their hardworking hands and engrossed eyes even as so-called ethically conscious designers steal credit and design.

Step beyond the elegance of their fancy boutiques and steeply priced sustainable fashion, the woeful state of the artists and weavers across India is as telling as their handiwork.

Despite scenes of misplaced feminism and celebration of underdogs, body types and social classes, Sui Dhaaga is not looking to make villains out of anyone.

Instead, Katariya dodges cynicism, endorses reconciliation and views self-seeking folk as products of disappointment and disgruntlement.

No overblown drama, no weepy speech, Sui Dhaaga's sunshine spirit and throwaway nok jhonk pervades the uncertainty and exploitation.

Some of it is simplistic, some sentimental.

Often earnest displays of goodwill and spirit compensates for its arguable breakthroughs.

But Mauji and Mamta are such genuine souls -- a protective feeling is spontaneously elicited for the duo and their well being. No better feeling than crying and laughing along with the characters on screen.

Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma portray the world of Sui Dhaaga with a gentleness that turns everything it touches into gold.

They play out a marriage coming into its own in such delicate hues, to review their performance as anything but combined would be unjust.

An actor for all seasons, Raghuvir Yadav shines as the sceptic father haunted by his own failures.

Watching him on the ramp is one of Sui Dhaaga's truly heart melting moments.

As his zinger-ready wife, Yamini Dass carps on how they'd be better off if he'd glug down a bottle of alcohol through three days instead of downing two packets of milk in one.

She is a winner.

So is this film.

Sui Dhaaga, Movie Review: Anushka Sharma & Varun Dhawan Stitch It Well

Vickey Lalwani
1.0K 4 hrs
Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma are at their best in this Yash Raj film which will not just soothe you but teach you a few things as well
sui dhaaga

It's simple, it's sweet, it's clean. If you liked the Chotti Si Baat, Rajnigandha and Baaton Baaton Mein type of films you will like Sui Dhaaga maybe not as much but that's only because its music (uff, where are the melodies, I am screaming) fails to register (cruel statement?). Well, let the truth be told.

Like always, I am not going to put the thread in the needle (which means, tell you the story) because that's what you go to the theatres for, right? So I begin with Varun Dhawan, the boy has put in a very intense performance. He is so lovable, that you will definitely identify with his character if you have struggled in your early days (which I did). I quite like him more when he sports a moustache, do you? As for Anushka Sharma, I could not believe my eyes. She is so good. Marvellous is the word, hardly any dialogues and lots of expressions- isn't that what real acting is all about? An extra inch for Anushka? Hmmm... nope, it's a tie between Varun and her.

Sui Dhaaga
Varun Dhawan And Anushka Sharma In Sui Dhaaga

In far less than its run of 122 minutes, the endearing Sui Dhaaga drives home the message that love is not about holding hands, necking, kissing and having sex. Sui Dhaaga teaches you that your parents may not be on the same page with you, but you should not neglect them. Sui Dhaaga tells you that never work in an organisation that humiliates you. Sui Dhaaga conveys that you have an inner talent and don't listen to your head and stagnate on the same career path if your heart flutters otherwise.

Sharad Katariya (director) somewhat loses the hold on the interesting screenplay a few minutes after the interval, but manages to produce an interesting climax. No melodrama or monologue in the end, but still 'sab badhiya hai'.

Sui Dhaga
A Still From Sui Dhaaga

Can't go away by touching upon the fact that this film could have been one notch up if Anu Malik had given his best. Anu, you have let Yash Raj (producer) down, you have let Varun and Anushka down. Yahan, 'sab badhiya nahin hai'. Maybe on hindsight, Sui Dhaaga is not a film which should have gone to the otherwise peppy Malik, who has made a comeback of sorts on the music scene recently but needs to regain his lost lustre a bit quickly now.

And yeah, I am going with THREE.

'Sui Dhaaga' Review: Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma are brilliant but the film is not stitched to perfection

DNA Web Team | Updated: Sep 28, 2018, 03:30 PM IST

Film: Sui Dhaga - Made In India (Comedy-Drama-Romance)

Critic's Rating: 3/5

Cast: Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma, Raghubir Yadav

Direction: Sharat Katariya

Duration: 2 hours, 02 minutes

Language: Hindi (U)

Story:

Based on the Make In India campaign launched by our government in 2014, Sui Dhaaga - Made In India salutes the spirit of middle-class pride and self-reliance. Mauji (Varun Dhawan), a proficient tailor, lives in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, with his family. He works at a cloth store, but he dreams of owning his own garment business. His simplicity and winning nature are taken for granted by most and it's his newly-married wife Mamta (Anushka Sharma), who encourages him to chase the rainbow.

Review:

Self-reliance is a great thing. Taking pride in everything that India does well is also a very good thing. However, to give an unsuspecting audience a drab run of everyday issues faced by the lower middle-class in the heartland of India is not necessarily entertainment. So, actually, the marketing pitch of Sui Dhaaga is wrong. If you sold this to us as a find-your-feet campaign, it works. However, to say it will entertain along with enlighten is rubbish.

You have a National-Award winning talent (Dum Laga Ke Haisha) at hand. You have two superstars (Varun and Anushka), who want to appease their conscience by doing middle-of-the-road cinema. So, you find a script on how, despite all odds -- lack of water, sanitation, cheats and challenges -- India still manages to write her own story of victory. You use this backdrop and pepper it with the small-town dream of making it "on your own".

Next, you intrinsically weave all this into the mundane existence of live-wire Mauji and his lustreless wife Mamta. Frankly, this is clever but till intermission point, the result is plain boring. Babuji (Raghubir Yadav in superlative form) and Amma, with her imaginary ills keep taking off on their 'black sheep' son Mauji without provocation. To make matters worse, Mamta prefers to make chappatis rather than consummate her marriage. So there isn't even a whiff of romance. Just imagine having two mainstream actors and not even giving them some mastiwala magical moments.

The script that attempts to expose the ills of an impoverished life in India's heartland is routine. The problems have been seen by us in countless films previously and in Government documentaries. While one must say that the dialogue is witty and Varun Dhawan is outstanding, everything else has the "been-there-seen-that" dj vu quality.

Also, the all-trusting naivete shown by Varun and Anushka, who play small-town people, is not fully convincing. Pronouncing a couple of words with a particular Hindi accent and looking wide-eyed doesn't add up. Yet, Varun manages to be this spunky tiger who is determined to stand out amidst the sheep. His incandescence helps blind out some of his inadequacies. Anushka's simplicity shines through but her role has no depth.

The script is immature and loose. There are no surprises in the plot. That Mamta and Mauji will suffer all ills and emerge victorious on the right platform is a foregone conclusion. So, why even make this two-hour long story to tell us what could have been said in a 20-minute public service commission film?

The thing about films like Sui Dhaaga, Padman, Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Batti Gul Meter Chalu is that mainstream actors suddenly feel the need to awaken India. And they set off in the direction of the big daddy who will back their dreams. Whether India becomes self-reliant or not, we have no clue. But yes, the actors have taken their shot at posterity. One definitely applauds their effort, but cinema's thumb rule is that you need to entertain.

Verdict:

Sui Dhaaga has a spirited Varun and some truly witty dialogue. You can toss a coin and decide whether or not to watch it for this young actor, who carries the burden of this mediocre film with his never-say-die spirit.

❤️Damn I want this to work for this guy, kya yaar😆

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: Varun Dhawan Stitches Himself To The Term Of Superstar!

Sui Dhaaga - Made In India is a partly entertaining film with some heart-wrenching moments.

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: Varun Dhawan Stitches Himself To The Term Of Superstar!

What's Good: When you've Varun Dhawan in your film, it becomes hard to decide what's the best thing about that film; the pre-interval sequence & climax

What's Bad: The film could've gone places but instead it's restricted by a very lazy screenplay and indolent story, tries to touch the zones of both the masses & classes but fails to achieve either of them

Loo Break: Varun Dhawan will not let you leave your seats though the pace might pinch you to

Watch or Not?: Totally worth watching only if you keep your expectations limited

Sui Dhaaga Made In India continues the franchise of fulfil your dreams' following the likes of Secret Superstar & PadMan. Mauji (Varun Dhawan) works at a sewing machine shop and is treated very badly by the owner. His wife Mamta goes against this and suggests Mauji to do something of his own. On his way to achieve the lost self-respect, Mauji decides to put up a sewing machine on a road and starts a new journey of his life.

Tacking the tensions in the family, Mauji and Mamta somehow manage to keep their dream intact. Facing many hardships, there comes many struggles as Mauji and Mamta accept a job in a factory. Their work gets labelled by big fish in the market which brings them back to square one. Rest of the story narrates the extraordinary' fight of this ordinary' couple.

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: Varun Dhawan Stitches Himself To The Term Of Superstar!

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: Script Analysis

Sharat Katariya's script is the weakest point of all. Every frame had a chance to do much more but something falls short in each of them. Creating a setup as Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, it needed some hilarious dialogues as it but Sui Dhaaga fails on paper. Varun Dhawan's exhilarating performance backed by the heart-warming touches to the story makes this a one-time watch.

Knowing Shahrat Katariya, there were hopes because his last film Dum Laga Ke Haishawas a 24 Karat magic on screen. The struggle shown seemed artificial and doesn't really strike the right chords. The pre-interval sequence and climax make up for the average screenplay throughout the film. Not as good as many movies seen in this template but also not bad enough to give it a miss.

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: Star Performance

Varun Dhawan rocks as Mauji! With each of his film he's moulding himself into an actor who can do anything. October was not long ago when he charmed us away without saying much. His ingenious presence, at most of the places, cover up the major flaws making your time worthy.

Anushka Sharma goes a bit overboard as Mamta but I guess that's what her character was about. Not her fault, Sharat should have added some layers to her character but instead she is left shallow for the major chunk. Raghuvir Yadav as Mauji's father has couple of funny sequence but with an actor of that stature there was more expected of him. Yamini Das as Mauji's mother remains a memorable takeaway for me. She's as close to reality as it can get and a walking teddy-bear.

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: Direction, Music

Sharat Katariya levels up as a director but steps down when it comes to script. It's directed well but roams around a lot of boring vicinities. The Made In India' campaign had a lot of scope to explore but Sharat instead focuses on the struggles of the couple. PadMan in the similar zone scores well for selling what they aimed at.

Anu Malik's music is good as songs work well with the story. Chaav Laga, Khatar Patarand Sui Dhaaga in the climax are placed perfectly and enhances the impact of those scenes. There is a moment where Varun Dhawan has a Pursuit Of Happyness moment in the climax and while writing the review I got to know the background music of the film is given by Andrea Guerra (The man who gave the BGM for Pursuit Of Happyness). The background score is easily the second best thing after Varun Dhawan's performance.

Sui Dhaaga Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Sui Dhaaga Made In India is a partly entertaining film with some heart-wrenching moments. Varun Dhawan stitches his performance with your hearts and it'll be hard to undo it for a long time now. If only there could have been more humour!

Three stars!

Sui Dhaaga Is A Clean Winner In Every Department Of Cinema, Is Inspiring, Earthy And Honest With Earnest Performances

Published on September 28, 2018

Sui Dhaaga starring Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma is wining hearts all over due to its simplistic approach and earthy & emotional connect. Read the full review here...

Movie : Sui Dhaaga

Director : Sharat Katariya

Cast : Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma, Raghubir Yadav, Abha Parmar, Namit Das, Govind Pandey

Rating : 4.5/5

Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma in a still from Sui Dhaaga

Sharat Katariya has his own school of cinema which takes you back to the roots of India showing the real India with his films one after the another. After impressing us massively with Dum Laga Ke Haisha, he is back with Sui Dhaaga which stars Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma along with seasoned actors like Raghubir Yadav, Abha Parmar, Namit Das etc. The film which takes you to the roots of India and shows us the life's joy & struggles of beautifully written earthy characters and inspires at the go. It starts with telling the endearing story of Mauji (Varun Dhawan) and Mamta (Anushka Sharma) who are married to each other in a small village who live with Mauji's parents played by Raghubir Yadav and Abha Parmar. Mauji is a simple man who has dreams in life to do something big but has a limited thinking and is in the Sab Badhiya Hai' phase of his life where he is okay with how life is going even if it is full of humiliation and mocking. On the other hand, Mamta who is a dedicated wife and daughter-in-law doesn't like how his husband is treated by the people under whom he is working and tries her best to evoke the feelings of self-respect inside him.

Anushka Sharma in a still from Sui Dhaaga

Learning from his mistakes, Mauji leaves his job and starts to do something of his own with the help and constant support of Mamta. He tries his best to become big in life and garner respect amidst the society and for his father going through many struggles and hardships which are equally shared by Mamta. He travels by the bus to save money for the bus-ticket and sacrifice other things but maintains that his self-worth is not harmed anymore.

Varun Dhawan in a still from Sui Dhaaga

The best aspects of the film are it's simplistic story-telling, earthy & endearing dialogues, honest and earnest performances by the whole cast and most importantly it's length. The movie is just around 2 hours and swifts with pace which is super enjoyable. Also, the additional supporting cast fit like a glove to the film's packaging where Raghubir and Abha do wonders and make us a bigger fan of them. The film will make you smile, laugh, cry and most importantly smile all at the same time. Brownie points goes to the music and the background score which works perfectly for the film which is given by the maverick Anu Malik. Also, the film doesn't have a melodramatic climax like most of the films and yet is super effective despite having zero monologues.

Beautifully scripted & directed by Sharat Katariya, Sui Dhaaga is entertaining, emotional and away from the loopholes of Bollywood cinema. Sharad's direction is crisp and sharp and he proves that he is here to stay. Coming to the performances, Varun as Mauji has given us yet another endearing & adorable performance after October where he played Dan with equal conviction showing the range of his enigmatic acting. He still remains the most exciting actor from this youngest creed of actors. Anushka Sharma as Mamta is the surprise package of the film who proves that despite being utterly urban, she can pull off rural characters with aplomb. She is lovable and inspiring as Mamta and scores as an actor almost in every scene. Not to forget, Raghubir and Abha along with Namit Das and Govind Pandey add a lot of depth in the film.

Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma in a still from Sui Dhaaga

Thank you for this gem, Sharat. Sab Badhiya Hai actually! take a bow Team Sui Dhaaga.
