This is the film I have been wanting to watch this year when I first stumbled upon the look of Varun and Anushka. There was something so honest and authentic about their look, it was stripped down yes, but it did not come across fake like a Dharma movie where someone is trying hard to fit into a character, the still image showed the character they were because of the simple, honest make up and look.
I was scared the movie would not hold up to that simplicity, it would gloss it up because these were two mainstream actors who were more urban and polished in their image and not the "usual" actors who act in films like these. Boy was I wrong. I love the introduction scene of both Varun and Anushka.
Varun Dhawan finally made me a fan today. I did not like him in SOTY. I did not like many or perhaps any of his original choices. He was one of those actors I would not go specifically for a movie for. But then he started making those choices that forced me to take a second look. His bold choices which he followed up with good acting made me take notice of him. Sui Dhaga sealed the deal.
Anushka, again not really a big fan. But this movie, she and Varun did so much of the acting through communicating other than dialog. They had such a sweet, simple chemistry. I felt like I visited a village in India today. Took tea with a simple Indian family who told me their story
I keep using the words authentic, simple, sweet, honest to describe this movie. Words I usually use to describe regional cinema. But after the gloss and falseness of so many BW movies which cannot tell a story straight is not there in this. The fact that it came from YRF India's biggest studio and not some small filmmaker gives me hope that BW is not dead after all. This is why I respect Adi. YRF can tell stories with heart, rooted in reality even when mainstream actors act in it and have actors who are honest and humble enough to strip themselves bare to play a part. It makes me so happy this movie is making money both in India and in other countries. Perhaps other film makers can learn from this (looking at you KJO and Dharma). 4 out of 5 stars.
