Sui Dhaaga belongs to Varun Dhawan

It is a spirited but predictable tale about tailor-made dreams in a small-town milieu

There is a moment right before Sui Dhaaga hits interval point. Mauji (Varun Dhawan) and Mamta (Anushka Sharma) trudge through dusty highways to enrol in a competition that could win them their own sewing machine. Bleeding from a cut in the foot as a result of a topple from his cycle, Mauji makes a pit stop at a clinic for treatment, with Mamta filling in for him at the queue. He takes longer than usual and the competition starts, with Mamta having no choice but to take his place. But unlike her husband, she is no expert at sui and dhaagaand breaks down at the thought of the opportunity lost. When she looks up through tears in her eyes, she spots Mauji, a smile on his face, limping his way to her. The scene also seen in the trailer may have become fodder for many a hilarious meme, but is memorable for the mix of triumph and hopelessness that's writ large on Varun's face much like how Varun's Dan looked at Shiuli as he watched her slowly slipping away in October.

Sui Dhaaga belongs to Varun Dhawan. Whether he's play-acting as a dog to please his uncouth employer or being the dutiful son despite his father's constant taunts; whether he's ready to brave all odds to bring his entrepreneurial dream alive or quietly slips his hand through Anushka's when they score their first win. Like October's simple yet searing Dan, Varun doesn't miss a beat and makes you feel he's been Mauji all his life, a happy-go-lucky Everyman who believes "Sab badhiya hai, no matter what life throws at him.

Like his previous film Dum Laga Ke Haisha, director Sharat Katariya excels in conjuring up the small-town milieu. The houses look lived in, the conversations are real and relatable and the characters from the pile-on neighbour who drops in for adrak ki chai at all times of the day to the slimy relative who palms off money in the name of doing a favour are anything but cardboard cut-outs.

It is in this atmosphere that Mauji and Mamta married for a few years, but never having got a private moment in their cramped tenement go about the daily rigmarole of life. Mauji is mistreated by his employer, with Mamta remaining a mute spectator. When she breaks down one day at the humiliation, he chucks his job. The next step? The two get together to stitch their "Mad in India dream, but like any underdog tale, this one has its fair share of ups and downs before its feel-good end.

Keeping it simple in the first half works for Sui Dhaaga. Mamta and Mauji are instantly likable and though Anushka doesn't effortlessly become a docile housewife in the first hour, she comes into her own in the second half. For if it is Mauji's skill that builds their enterprise, it's Mamta's business brain that takes it forward. She strikes bargains with gusto and fixes deals that bring in the customers.

Mamta and Mauji's love grows through shared cups of tea while burning the midnight oil to deliver an order on deadline, and Varun and Anushka bring in a quiet, naive chemistry that will make you break into a smile. Like Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Katariya also mines humour from the mundane like Mauji's mother (a top-notch Yamini Dass) worrying about filling the family's daily quota of two buckets of water even as she's being stretchered to hospital; or that moment when a relative proudly gives the family a ride home in his car where the door needs to be manually prised open and fitted back.

Simple gives way to simplistic in Half Two. Mauji and Mamta's enterprise hits a few roadblocks, but they are conveniently and predictably taken care of; distrustful neighbours and a bickering family are won over in the course of a song and the climax a little too melodramatic for a film where the texture and treatment are largely real is a bit of a downer.

Anu Malik's music is pedestrian, except for the hummable Chaav laaga, but it's not a patch on his own soulful Moh moh dhaage from Dum Laga Ke... Andrea Guerra's background score is a #win.

Sui Dhaaga may throw up no surprises but it is a watchable example of the power of the human spirit and dignity of labour. If you are looking for something more entertaining built around the theme of entrepreneurship, rewind to Band Baaja Baaraat.

❤️excited to watch the film but super excited for his performance <3😆

Since the '90s, there came a trend in our films of depicting our stars wearing designer chic and romancing each other in exotic locations abroad. That hugely fed aspirational values but the stories were off tangent somewhere from the actual struggles, actual needs of the common masses. All cinema is by definition escapist but such films were escapist to the extreme. They were modern fairytales and became formulaic as the years passed. Seen one, seen all. Of late, the tide is changing. Modern filmmakers are again putting an year to the ground, trying to come up with real stories. They are going back to villages and small towns, not for the inherent romance associated with such places but in search of characters who are more rooted in reality. Sui Dhaaga: Made in India is one such story.

For years, we have been hearing the refrain that the youth should turn away from seeking jobs and concentrate in being entrepreneurs. Small industries, businesses are the way to progress. Another thing we hearing is that we should go back to our handicrafts and invest in their uniqueness. Sui Dhaaga combines both these features and makes a strong case for self-empowerment without being preachy about it. It also tells you that for our local artisans to have a global reach, they have to be savvy with the current trends but that's not that hard in our internet era.

But more than being a film about making the youth aware about self-employment, it's also a love story at heart. And it's a refreshingly different love story than what get mostly served to us. The leads don't jump into the bed and let their raging hormones hold sway. In fact, they don't even sleep on the same bed despite being married, subtly bringing home the point that intimacy or the lack of it is a huge issue for millions still. They discover each other when they go out in the world to launch their business. Again, this discovery doesn't lead to pompous declarations of love. What's expressed is through eyes, through body language. There are no villains in the story either as the protagonists realise that the world indeed is unfair and it's not the people but the circumstances that are at fault.

Kudos to writer and director Sharat Katariya for coming up with such a rooted tale. And kudos to Varun Dhawan for agreeing to be part of it. He has tried something totally new for him here. Being Mauji wouldn't have come easy to him because the world Mauji belongs to is totally different from the world Varun comes from. To curb the sensibilities of the commercial hero within him and just be the character wouldn't have been easy but Varun didn't shy away from the challenge. Anushka Sharma has the knack of seeping into her characters and she's a delight to watch as the golden-hearted Mamta who shows a head for business, for bargaining and yet is naive to the ways of the world. Her bubble gets burst when she meets the owner of a garment factory and the way she internalises the humiliation and learns from it leaves a mark. Raghubir Yadav plays Mauji's father and the veteran is in fine fettle as usual. The scene where he walks the ramp, his eyes not believing what he's seeing, his body language betraying both his nervousness and pride is an acting lesson in miniature. Anil Mehta's cinematography brings alive the heat and dust of the small backwater where Mamta and Mauji live, the subdued colour palette becoming a reflection of their humdrum lives. Anu Malik has given some nice melodious tunes set to Varun Grover's imaginative wordplay. The songs seamlessly get merged into the narrative and thankfully don't drag the pace down

Sui Dhaaga

By Shubarna Mukerji Shu Friday, Sep 28, 2018 11:39: PM
Cast: Varun Dhawan, Anushka Sharma, Raghubir Yadav
Director: Sharat Katariya
Genre: Drama/Comedy
Release Date: 2018-09-28
Language: Hindi
Rating: 3/5

He did it once with Dum Laga Ke Haisha, he took a story about a chubby girl and her reluctant husband, and turned it into a victory of love and relationships. It won him a national award. So when the same trio Sharat Katariya, Maneesh Sharma and YRF came together you automatically expected a sweet, sensitive film this time with bigger stars. You are partially right about the sweet thing.

So, we have Mauji (Varun Dhawan), and like his name he is a mann-mauji, who always believes Sab badiya hai', his mother is ailing but sab badiya hai, his father rants at him from sun up to sun down but sab badiya hai, his employer uses him mercilessly and yet, pokes fun at him and humiliates him but sab badiya hai. It is when his wife, Mamta, finally tells him to grow a backbone, does Mauji realise there is someone who has faith in him, who sees him capable of doing something more, something better.

Of course, the situation at home doesn't change but he quits working for his hideous employer and starts his own bijness (business). Of course, it doesn't take off from the word go, after all nothing in Mauji's life goes right. However, despite his spate of bad luck, his lady love who embroiders like a dream doesn't give up and doesn't let him give up either.

In the subsequent days, there is struggle, there is triumph and the underdog becomes the victor. The crux of the story is pretty regular but what works for the film is Varun Dhawan. The man comes with his own brand of charm. He manages to make the audience laugh and cry as spontaneously as he breathes. As a tailor, he is adorable and efficient. He manages to look the part efficiently too. Of course, part of the charm of this film is watching Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma play non-glamorous people. Just watching Anushka Sharma drape that floral saree, wearing a sweater, sans make-up playing a rural girl - a personality so against the grain of the Anushka Sharma we know makes the movie exceptional. That and the chemistry between the lead actors...

Mauji and Mamta's silent romance is one of the sweetest thing you see the film. With the kind of work hours the two put, romance is perhaps the last thing on their mind and yet, somehow their love is palpable, which makes it real and beautiful. Having said that, the pace of the film is a too slow, and there aren't really any massive surprises you expect in the film, as a result there is nothing that you look forward to.

The audience might not be able to relate to the struggle of the characters, though they might empathise with them. So the film starts getting a little sad towards the middle, and the audience as a result, gets restless.

There is humour in the dialogues which are written very simply and thus effectively, but the situations are not ha-ha worthy. As a result the ending makes you smile rather than pump your fists in the air and say, Yeah, Mauji, you did it, man!' Unfortunately, the essence of an underdog film, should be feeling the latter!

Perhaps the lead in the film just wanted to be a part of a National award winning director's film but the ulterior motive behind the film is obvious and certainly doesn't help in making the project entertaining to the audience. And the onus of making a good film falls squarely on the director's shoulders, and while Sharat doesn't disappoint, he certainly doesn't impress.

Those coming into the theatres might certainly not look for a rollicking hilarious entertainer, but the movie could have been shorter and crisper by at least fifteen more minutes. This is a sweet-dhaaga, but it doesn't create a lasting bond.

#SuiDhaaga - It is remarkable to see how both the superstars have been total demystified. @Varun_dvn comes up with a terrific understated performance. He is completely different from the way he has been seen before. He is honest and truly into the character. A very good act

While #SuiDhaaga is expected to grow on Day 2 and Day 3, its biz is expected to jump from Day 4 [Mon] *evening* onwards, since Day 5 [Tue] is a big national holiday: Gandhi Jayanti... A strong total is on the cards, if its target audience [families] throng cineplexes.
