@Angel: You saw Shashikala in "Mujhko apne gale laga lo"? 😕 As far as I know, the female lead opp Rajendra Kumar is Jamuna, a South Indian actress. I need to watch the song again to check if Shashikala makes an appearance there!
And Sahir was rumored to have been in love with Sudha Malhotra. "Tum mujhe bhool bhi jao" and "Chalo ek baar phirse" were seemingly written for her. Though she always denied it. Of course, his other love affair with Amrita Pritam was common knowledge. Sahir was said to be a commitment-phobe that never really wanted to settle down. Perhaps he enjoyed the angst that doomed love brought him, that enabled him to write such deeply meaningful yet cynical poetry.

Ae mere watan ke logon, zara aankh mein bhar lo paani
Jo shaheed huye hain unki zara yaad karo qurbaani

Music: C. Ramchandra
Lyrics: Kavi Pradeep
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar

This song speaks of a different kind of reminiscence, probably the highest kind. It urges us to remember the sacrifices of our brave soldiers, the ones who give up their lives to protect their country.
Performed by Lataji a few months after the Sino-Indian war of 1962 at the Republic Day gathering, this song was purported to have moved the then PM Jawaharlal Nehru to tears, saying that those who don't feel inspired by this song shouldn't call themselves Hindustani.
Truly, the powerful lyrics by Kavi Pradeep (as only he can write such inspiring patriotic poetry along the lines of "Aao bacchon tumhe dikaoon") can move even the most stoic of hearts to tears. So unfortunate and unfair that he wasn't able to witness the impact of the song when it was first performed since he wasn't invited to the Republic Day function (Why?? 😡)

Lataji had some differences with the MD C. Ramchandra at the time so she suggested her sister, Asha sing the song. But Pradeep was adamant that Lata should sing it. She convinced him to let them both sing it, but at the last moment Asha refused to come to the rehearsal in Delhi. So it turned out that Lataji sung it solo. And it became her most celebrated song- no performance by her was complete without a rendition of "Ae mere watan ke logon".

The beginning of the song itself is so moving:

Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon
Tum Khoob Lagaa Lo Naaraa
Yeh Shubh Din Hai Hum Sab Ka
Leharaa Lo Tirangaa Pyaara
Par Mat Bhoolo Seema Par
Veeron Ne Hai Praan Ganwaaye
Kuchh Yaad Unhein Bhi Kar Lo
Jo Laut Ke Ghar Na Aaye

and

Jab Desh mein thi Diwali
Woh khel rahe the Holi
Jab hum baithe the gharon mein
Woh jhel rahe the goli

This song still stands as India's most patriotic song ever, next to the National Anthem itself and Sare Jahan se accha.

Phir mujhe deeda-e-tar yaad aaya
Dil jigar tishn-ae fariyaad aaya

- Mirza Ghalib (1954)

What is it about Bharat Bhushan that he got such wonderful songs to sing on screen? 😊 This is already the 3rd song I'm posting of him in this topic, his penchant for playing historical characters really served him well. 😃

With original lyrics from the celebrated poet, Mirza Ghalib from the eponymously titled movie, this song is so beautifully rendered by Talat Mehmood, that I cannot find the words to describe it.

Just listen to the inflection in his voice during "Dum liya tha na qayamat ne hanoz" - gives me goosebumps everytime!

Phir tere kooche ko jaata hai khayaal
Dil-e-gumgashta magar yaad aaya

Ghulam Mohammad has done a splendid job of setting the poet's lyrics to music - not an easy task- mind you. The lyrics don't lend themselves to music very easily, but for me, this along with Pakeezah stand as Ghulam Mohammad's best works ever.

Each song in this album is a masterpiece- Be it "Nukta cheen hai gham-e-dil", "Aah ko chahiye ek umr asar hone tak" or "Dil-e-nadaan tujhe hua kya hai". Talat is the voice for Mirza Ghalib played by Bharat Bhushan with one outstanding song by Mohammad Rafi, that to me, it the highlight of the entire album- "Hai bas ke har unke ishaare mein nishaan aur". You get a taste of Ghalib's tongue-in-cheek lyrics here -
"Hai aur bhi duniya mein sukhanwar bahut acche
Kehte hain ke Ghalib ka hai andaaz-e-bayaan aur"😃

Which is why I restricted myself to just posting songs thus far, but then the temptation of writing something about each song was too hard to resist. 😳

please don't stop writing 😃 ..share with us the treasure of insight and knowledge you have :)

- Tarana (1951)

Madhubala- Dilip Kumar: One of Indian cinema's most celebrated reel and real-life romantic pairs. And Tarana was the very first time they came together. The sparks that supposedly flew between them are so evident in this movie- every frame they're in together sizzles with chemistry. Yes, chemistry- that overused word that's thrown around all too loosely when one has to just look at these two to know that they defined the word. In every sense of its meaning.
His plane crashes in her village, he's a doctor who's tending to the injured and she's the village belle whose father (who's blind) urges her to help him. Their cheeky banter turns into love- how could it not?- and Dilip's own family and his father's promise to his friend's daughter, Shyama that he'd get his son married to her is all but forgotten in Tarana's (Madhubala's) arms. But soon a local's jealousy (Gope, who usually plays comic roles is kind of a villain here) ruins everything. They're caught in a storm and accused of the usual dishonorable act, Dilip is badly beaten and Madhu is dragged away in anger by her father (whose sight has been restored by Dilip). Angst ensues, the pair are separated, and Dilip is all set to marry Shyama. Thankfully, it all ends well.
The highlight of this movie (other than the lead pair) has got to be the songs by veteran Anil Biswas. It's hard to pick a favorite, the entire soundtrack is amazing- be it the soulful Seene mein sulagte hain armaan, or the playful and romantic Nain mile nain huye baawre, the angst-ridden Ek main hoon ek meri bekasi ki shaam hai, or the teasing Beimaan tore nainwaa.
Yun chhup chhupke is another lilting melody in this musical bonanza. The lyricist Prem Dhawan writes in keeping with the mood of the song-

Pyar ki maar buri, dil ki haar buri
lo haar gaye dil bani mushkil
Nanha sa mera dil tod na jaana
hansega saara zamaana

:D

I looove Tarana songs, and more so because of Madhubala-Dilip chemistry 😳

Lizzie, TFS for all these insightful, entertaining posts 👏⭐️

You should start a blog about BW oldies, if you haven't already... I am sure it'll be a hit 😊

Deedar was on ZTV recently and you're right, seemed like a whiny movie, I couldn't finish it 😆

And watched Tarana on TV yrs ago and was blown away by their chemistry at an age I didn't even know what chemistry meant

Have been a sucker for (onscreen) chemistry ever since

@bold... LB, this is very true.. 😃 ..you really should, with the amount of knowledge and passion you have for music!! :)

- Baiju Bawara (1952)

This movie and its songs hold a special place in my heart. It was my dad's favorite soundtrack and in his last days, among the few things that animated him. I grew up listening to these songs play on my dad's reel-to-reel tape player, recordings that he had carefully preserved and maintained over the years and among others, this soundtrack helped nurture my lifelong love and appreciation for music.
I believe this is Naushad's greatest musical accomplishment. Yes, even more than Mughal-e-Azam which is his most famous and celebrated soundtrack to date.
Every song in this album is a treasure. Even the one I like the least - Door koi gaaye- has its moments. It catapulted Mohd Rafi to a zenith on which he stayed for years to come. Man Tarpat and O Duniya ke Rakhwale are counted among his best works and serve as examples for upcoming singers even now. Legend has it that Rafi's voice was so stretched in the latter that his throat began to bleed.
The movie also showcased Lata's talent to the fullest with songs like this one and my favorite in Raag Bhairav - Mohe Bhool Gaye Saawariya.

Baiju Bawara was supposedly based on a true story of a singer that challenged Tansen to a musical duel in Akbar's court. Javed Akhtar told a story of how he found his decrepit grave on the Zee show The Golden Years. I don't know how true the rest of the story is, I'm sure a lot of cinematic license came into play.

Baiju's father is killed by Tansen's guards who stop him from singing and Baiju (Bharat Bhushan) grows up seeking revenge on Tansen. He falls in love with Gauri (Meena Kumari) and forgets all about his revenge. His village is attacked by dacoits and this is the situation for one of the most inspiring songs ever- Insaan bano. 😭👏
The dacoit leader (a woman) falls in love with him and bargains that she would spare his village if he went along with her. So Baiju leaves and Gauri is distraught. That is the context for this song.

Shakeel Badayuni's magic pen brings out Gauri's pain beautifully -😭

Ghar mere umeedon ka sunaa kiye jaate ho
Duniya hi mohabbat ki loote liye jaate ho
Jo gham diye jaate ho uss gham ki dava karna 😭😭

wow LB, just listened to the entire album of Baiju Bawra after reading this.. and with the the help of the context you have given, felt like a 'wholesome' experience listening/watching the songs 😃 Loved the album, lost myself listening to the songs - every song is so good, and so much melody, so much classical influence ⭐️ loved the videos too, there's something cute/innocent or even fairy tale-like about the videos , the people's involvement especially in Tu Ganga Ki Mauj, door koi gaye dhun ye sunaye :)..my eyes welled up for some reason while listening to Insaan Bano lol..

Thankyou for beautiful write-ups 👏

Those lyrics.., one of the topmost songs that gives me consolation, pacifies me 💔 who is she, LB, Amrita, the one whom Sahir fell in love with?

why don't they write such songs anymore? :(

Okay so here goes:

Songs sung when intoxicated
Songs of waiting / anticipation
Songs of the weather (mausam)
Songs on the piano (or any other musical instrument)
Songs of bewafaai
Talat songs 😃
Rain songs (I know it's part of the weather but there are so many barsaat songs in BW, it warrants a separate topic 😆)
Songs sung to divinity/ God/ prayers/ bhajans
Hemant Kumar songs! 😳
Mannadey songs
Geeta Dutt songs
(I'm including these singers since they're all but forgotten these days)

That's a lot of topics. Will post more as I think of them 😳.

I was thinking of making something happy this week, with two active music topics that are kinda morose, was thinking something like "Non-romantic(love/relationships) songs that make you feel good about yourselves" or "Non-romantic songs that make you happy" .. :) ?? just something happy not related to love Lizzie, what do you say :D
