Beautiful.. 👏 Asha + Lata ⭐️

Why in colour?😃 And why this song specifically?
Yes- Lata and Asha songs have a undeniable appeal, the two sisters complement each other perfectly. Surprisingly, they sang very few songs together, just a handful. Kar gaya re is another of my favorite Lata-Asha duets. Also, Minoo Mumtaz and a very young Aruna Irani! (though Aruna looks almost incompetent in front of Minoo, but it was early days for her, so I'll give her that) I love the choreography, I love Minoo Mumtaz's dancing. Just watch her dance in "Saaqiya aaj mujhe neend nahi aayegi". And with Kumkum in "Reshmi Salwar". Amazing!
Amrapali was Vyjayantimala's Magnum Opus. She was supposedly shattered when the movie flopped.

Jhoomti chali hawa yaad aa gaya koi
bhujti bhujti aag ko phir jala gaya

- Sangeet Samrat Tansen (1962)

From playing Baiju, Tansen's nemesis to playing Tansen himself, Bharat Bhushan seemed born to play historical characters 😃. For a movie about a famed musician, you'd expect the songs to be outstanding. This movie has all of 16 songs, however, I'm not familiar with any of them besides this one. Strangely, this is the one song by Mukesh in the album. The rest are sung by Rafi or Mannadey.

Masterfully rendered by Mukesh, this song is a complex composition in Raag Sohoni by S.N Tripathi, a MD also known for Rani Roopmati, which he also directed, and Lal Qila besides this movie.

Shailendra's lyrical genius shines with lines such as

Ek huk si uthi main sihar ke reh gaya
dil ko apne thaam ke aah bhar ke reh gaya
chandni ki ot se muskura gaya koi--

I had to look up the meaning of these words:

Sihar, I think means to thrill or tingle. And ot means shelter. Not sure what huk means. The Hindi dictionary online translates it as a catch or a button hook 😆. But perhaps it is hook (with the badi oo ki maatra) which could be interpreted as pain? Anyone who can shed light?

Jab Jab phool khile, tujhe yaad kiya humne
dekh akela hume, hume gher liya gham ne

- Shikast (1953)

I first heard this song on a Talat duets collection and immediately fell in love with it. Talat Mahmood's voice is like velvet and the unique timbre of his voice that almost makes it vibrate is what sets him apart. Anil Biswas had called it "kampan" in Hindi which describes it very well. I consider him to be the best ghazal singer ever, his renditions of ghazals are unbeatable. His soothing tonal quality is just right for this genre. He started out as Dilip Kumar's voice playing back to many of major early hits - Ek main hoon from Tarana, Ae mere dil kahin aur chal from Daag, Ye hawa, ye raat, ye chandni from Sangdil. He also tried his hand at acting, but that didn't take off. Naushad used him in Babul but was miffed when he discovered him smoking one day. He never used Talat again. But he remained a favorite of Anil Biswas.
This song is one of heartbreak but the melody by Shankar Jaikishen is strangely upbeat. The actors also don't look too sad 😆 although I'm not entirely sure about the context of the song, not having watched the movie, I feel pretty sure it's not all tears and pain. The mood of the song thus remains slightly optimistic for me, even though the lyrics by Shailendra are anything but.

Mann ko maine lakh manaya par ab to hai wo bhi paraya
Zakhm kiye lakhon, teri yaad ke marham ne

That Mukesh, he was good looking fella, wasn't he ⭐️ 😊

Somebody correct me if I am wrong

Huk - Pain

Siharna - shivering (could be suffering)

Phir wohi shaam wohi gham wohi tanhai hai
Dil ko samjhaane teri yaad chali aayi hai

- Jahan Ara (1964)

Yet another Bharat Bhushan song.😃 Insipid actor though he maybe, the man had some wonderful songs picturized on him.
What a sublime ghazal by Madan Mohan, truly the king of ghazals!⭐️ So wonderfully sung by Talat.👏 This movie is again a historical one, the story of Jahan Ara who was Aurangazeb's sister and Shah Jahan's daughter who was supposedly also imprisoned by her tyrant brother.

Rajinder Krishan pens some poignant lines-

Phir tasavvur tere pehlu mein bitha jayega
Phir gaya waqt ghadi bhar ko palat aayega
dil behal jayega aakhir ye to saudai hai

Wanted to watch 'Yaad aa gayi woh nashili nigahen' because of the set, LB. The orchestra, the theatre and the place outside theatre... look very charming, and am curious to see how Indian orchestra or theatre looked like in color back then :)

I cann't spot Aruna Iraniii :D ..is she the shorter one?

one song that means a lot to me for personal reason as it was dedicated to me by someone has already been posted...hence i am not going to populate this topic further

😆 okay Hippo, I see what you're saying... we'll make another topic asking people to list their number one picks for each theme/idea?
