I find them all one-note actors... as someone mentioned here, they all sustained on their unique styles...but still i dont understand the hype that Rajesh Khanna created, cause not only was he average actor, i didnt even find him good looking, or with a strong personality...

He did some really good performances in some really beautiful movies, but inspite of that I agree he was a strictly average actor.
But damn, he has the best collection of songs filmed on any actor ever, I don't other can compete with him on that, obviously that is enough to make girls drool on him and guys wanting to be like him.

It was a different era. Acting styles, methods and understanding all have changed drastically over the years.

Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand also had trademark mannerisms. But at least they tried to experiment within their limitations (Teesri Kasam, Guide).
Balraj Sahni was so natural. He always remains my favourite in that era.

But Dilip Kumar was so monotonous. In Mughal E Azhm, the one who charmed me was Prithviraj Kapoor. I have watched Dilip Kumar's Devdaas and Akkineni Nageshwar Rao's Devdas (in Telugu). Akkineni was so charming.

In the movie Saudaagar, both Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar are veterans. Still they ham in the same way when they were young. (People like Amitabh Bacchan adapt with time).

At least (thankfully), nobody calls Rajesh Khanna as a great actor. But everyone maintains silence about actors before him.

he was an ok actor i guess...he was never known for his acting skills..it was more for his looks and the romantic persona...but he was lucky that he got some really good movies...like Safar, Khamoshi, Bawarchi, Anand etc...i loved him in Safar...he was brilliant in it...in Anand he was good but i liked AB more..i think he is a director's actor...good with good directors and really bad with bad ones:)
those days the likes of Sanjeev Kumar were considered as good actors...Rajesh Khanna was more of those chocolate heroes who girls were crazy about

i never got the hype around Dilip Kumar either..i mean he is a natural but not one of the greatest..i prefer Sanjeev Kumar over him any day!

Today's acting has become a lot more harder and competitive. You have to shoot infront of a 4k camera which captures your every expression.

It seems like you are giving an opinion on Dilip Kumar
But by watching the mimic artists who mimic him.

Dilip Kumar was a natural and effortless artist,
and on top of that he was a big box office draw,
Only Sally has more highest grosser of the year than him.

I watched a few hit films of his. He has charm. Acting, not really versatile. I'm sure many actors fall in that category of succeeding through charm. However like what few members have said, most of them from that era are mostly one note and not so versatile. Even the likes of Amitabh were not great actors to begin with. The only actor I feel was a genuinely good actor was Sanjeev Kumar. Shashi Kapoor comes second. But he was also extremely charming. RK songs were very popular that time thanks to Kishore da singing. So I guess that also added to his popularity.
