Sarah: It was probably just a big compliment to her beauty. He wanted Mehru to look fresh-faced, innocent & virginal to highlight her plight more & make you feel more for her. She's also shown to be very young in the film. DP too didn't have much visible makeup on except kaajal as all the queens had. She was also dressed in brighter colours, the pale palette was to highlight her innocence & goodness & because the Muslim rulers generally favoured pastels, the Mughals are famed for this too.

The only "human" part of khilji (at least what i felt) was when he was waiting outside the fort waiting for her all night.
At the end he looked almost sad/heartbroken.

Also I felt that the "Ek dil, ek jaan" song was the "dream sequence" where they would have contrasted ratan and padmavati spending their last moments together and outside khilji waiting all night for her and lost in thoughts of her.
I found it odd that they would pick a more Urdu based song for ratan/Deepika
Definitely they had a khilji sequence in mind, which obv didn't materialize.

^^I thought the same! And that it was Khilji's song for Padma. I too found it very odd that they chose an Urdu song & on hearing the title that was my first thought!! They never would have & neither would Ratan, Padma ever have spoken Urdu LOL.

But he's f**ked up enough to believe that she should be eternally loyal & faithful to him. Her betrayal came as a huge shock to him but also showed him she has spunk. I wonder what would've happened once he returned back to Delhi. Wouldve killed her for not obtaining Padma since it was her direct involvement that led to their escape & the last chance in hindsight, for him to capture her.

Yeah... I've been thinking about that too. Everyone has been going on about Padmavati's Jauhar scene and the final battle scene between Allaudin and Rawal Ratan Singh. But no one seems to acknowledge the fact that this whole thing wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for Mehru. Although Padmavati's plan to raid his palace with her men disguised as women was brilliant, I still wonder if it would have panned out as successfully without Mehrunisa's help. Clearly Padmavati's soldiers were outnumbered during that raid. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't most of her soldiers die during that raid sequence?

Anyway, my point being, had it not been for Mehrunisa, Padmavati wouldn't have escaped... At least not that easily. Worst case scenario: she would have been captured by Malik Khafur while trying to escape. Mind you, Malik Khafur is deadly in combat situations. So I doubt she would have been able to fight him off.

So the whole Jauhar scene wouldn't have happened nor would the final battle had not been her involvement

But yeah... I do wonder what happened to Mehru after the Jauhar. I think the reason he spared her life wasn't just because he saw her as his to be "owned" (past connection and childhood friendship and all) but also because he was confident that he was going to capture Padmavati. He didn't forsee that Padmavati might take her own life. That must have been an even bigger blow to him than Mehrunisa's betrayal. So there is a good chance he might have killed her after he went back to Delhi.

^^Whats interesting is that Mehru was actually based on Khikji's Hindu queen Kamala Devi who seemed quite fascinating because she didn't bother committing Jauhar but just ran away to Khilji & became his chief-queen - apparently he loved her a lot! But they changed it because of the psychotic brigade to the Muslim Mehru.. He well coukdve killed her but I would like to believe he didn't. I think he wouldn't have because that's precisely what she would've wanted.
Padma is the only sensible one in the film. Both her husband & co-wife are weepy, annoying fatalists.

Even I felt the Urdu song was odd given how they could come up with a beautiful song for Ratan and Padma with classical Rajashtani beats. The song did feel very out of place against the Rajput clothing and palace.
But again, I have noticed, Bhansali for all his claims of 'being accurate and authentic' does end up using a lot of urdu words for characters that would not speak urdu. When Bajirao comes back from the war, Kashi is asked to say something about him in a poetic way (Its a marathi tradition called Ukhana), and she ends up using urdu words like 'Noor' - the Ukhana should have strictly been in Hindi or Marathi. Even Ratan calls Padma 'Khoobsurat' and not 'sundar' in one of his Singhal days. These are negligible creative mistakes if and only if one doesn't boast about the accuracy adopted in making of the Jewellery and clothes from that era. Bhansali does what he thinks sounds or looks good.

Guess, Bhansali thought it was enough to insert 'pan' in every sentence the Rajputs spoke to maintain authenticity in this department 😆

^^In the dialogues they do speak the Rajasthani lingo so it was just a hastily taken decision to please the psychos. Mastani was half-Hindu, half-Persian from her Hindu father's Persoan concubine, which is why she speaks both but with an Urdu tinge.

But RS speaking Urdu is just weird. "Sundar" is absolutely what they would say!!

Mastani speaking both langauges is absolutely fine. In fact, it is as it should be. I am talking about Kashi who was a pure Maharashtrian using Urdu words like 'Noor'. I remember thinking, wait a sec...did she just recite an Ukhana in urdu? That's a glaring creative error to make 😕

Marathi has quite a few Urdu words, noor though probably isn't one of them
