Human psychology can be f**ked up.
How can parents who love their children end up physically, mentally and sometimes even sexually abusing them?

Why do people who love their partners engage in domestic violence and rape? Why do victims of domestic violence and rape refuse to leave their partners because they believe they are loved?

Not all love is healthy. Not all people learn what is a healthy way to express love. Hence we have people who resort to abusive or violent behavior in the name of love. Thus we have complex villains born.

That being said Padmaavat is fiction. Khilji was a ruthless conqueror invader. Love/lust whatever is just tadka of age old literary recipes.

How

Isn't she based on Mallika e Jahan

Malika-i-Jahan ("Queen of the World")[1] was the first and chief wife of Sultan Alauddin Khalji,[2] the second and most powerful ruler of the Khalji
She was the daughter of Alauddin's predecessor and paternal uncle, Sultan Jalaluddin Khalji, the founder of the Khalji dynasty
The marriage, however, was not a happy one. Malika-i-Jahan used to take pride in being the daughter of the Sultan and was neglected by Alauddin due to her haughty demeanour

^^Initially there were reports that ARH would play Kamala Devi, Khilji's Hindu queen. They must've changed it anticipating protest or to really make Khilji a barbarian & Padma his sole Hindu obsession.

Cricketfan1: No, there are other accounts that I read stating that she willingly came to Khilji & his harem & there was love between them. That he used to send a small portion of his army to find her missing daughter who yes, had the most depressing story!! She fell in love with one of Khilji's sons, her step-brother, and since both mother & father disapproved; they eloped!! And were later found by Khilji's army. It was extremely sad. I didn't read that he passed her on etc. I just read that she fell in love with one of Khilji's sons & since permission was denied to them, to marry, they ran away. Idk how much to believe Wiki. It can be edited by anyone. That could be Psycho Brigade too. Lol

Sometimes it's the sense of attachment that is misconstrued as love. Real love has no room for abuse or violence.
But true! Complex villains aren't born in a vacuum. I kinda wonder what his childhood or early years were like? Why was he imprisoned? Who raised him? What was his relationship to his guardians like?

Would be lovely if they made a prequel of Padmavat over his early years! :-)

I did initially read those reports on Wikipedia too. However, I wasn't sure how accurate it was.

But I did find it funny that Malika-I-Jahan was the exact opposite of Mehrunisa in terms of personality and that it was she who seemed to wear the pants in the relationship! Lol!
I guess the changed her personality so as to not leave any room for the audience to sympathise with Khilji :-/

I'm pretty sure they changed her personality to make her more submissive and meek so that we do not sympathise with Khilji.

That being said, I do have a question: why does he slap Malik khafur in the scene where he is helping him get dressed? That scene really caught me off guard and I was trying to figure out what caused our Khilji to get so offended :-/

^^Khilji didn't gesture, ask to be dressed. To him it was familiarity on Kafur's part & that made it seem like Khilji wasn't in control. What do you think?

I thought that he got offended because he thought Malik Khafur was trying to take the place of the future queen, i.e. Padmavati and he slapped him to put him in his place.

A lot has been spoken about the chemistry between these two but I think it's safe to say that Allaudin wasn't ever in love with him and was simply using him for sexual pleasure. Which might explain the slap as he probably thought Khafur was getting too carried away with his feelings and therefore needed to be taken down a notch or two. If I'm not mistaken the slap does take place after the whole Binte Dil scene.

Which brings me back to the point that he has never truly loved anyone... So the sequence where he is standing outside waiting for Padmavati the night before the final battle is, sadly, the only time we get a glimpse of a human side to him.

^^History says he did love Kafur & it was Kafur who didn't & was using him all along to finally have the throne to himself.. Considering how Khilji made him into an eunuch... Idk how much to blame him but he did instantly kill Khilji's sons so he was as cruel as his lover-mentor. Who knows what history reveals & shades but your explanation makes sense. I do Feel that is what he felt & why Kafur used to question him & why he isn't ever threatened by Mehrus presence.
