xXx3 and Deepika good relationship with Paramount Ltd has helped Padmavat a lot.

Paramount Ltd has done a very great job for Padmavati. The highest grosser India movie in NA. It already beat The Rock - Jumanji.👏👏

Heres my Review on #Padmaavat Movie ..

If u love the grand style & story telling of SLB movies then this movie is surely a feast to the eyes especially when watched on Big Screen .. It was not just grand with spectacular camerawork but I found its story telling even better than Bajirao Mastani .. If u r expecting terrific war sequences in the movie then BM was a better movie as Bajirao was shown as a warrior but if u love watching strategic mind games and mind wars then Padmaavat in a better movie as Khilji is shown a terrific strategist and Queen Padmaavati is shown a intelligent queen who fails Khilji's every single strategy using her smart presense of mind ...So in terms of story telling Padmaavat is a better product than BM ...One may like it or not but Bhansali movies work in real world .. Indian Audience love watching grand sets and costumes and epic style drama on big screen than small screen .. Common man in India dont sit on twitter to listen to what feminists or liberals or karni sena r saying .. they will spend their hard earned money to watch something thats worth watching on a big screen and thats where Bhansali movies score as people spend money to watch the grandness and breathtaking visuals .. So yeah real world love bhansali style of movie making compare to the intellectuals of internet world .. A bitter reality or else BM would never defeat Dilwale and if we argue Dilwale got beaten due to no screening in few states then lets not forget Padmaavati is not being screened in 4 major states as well ..Padmavati might go onto make 200 crore despite not releasing in many states ..Mark my words on this as I hv myself witnessed the craze in theatre and how public r gushing about the movie after watching .. I m talking about the real world here and not the intellect errmm I mean internet world 😆

I hv noticed that many in the Internet world r quick to criticise SLB style of movie making especially the so called liberals and feminists calling them regressive but I just want to say that before judging his movies we need to take into account the Era in which most SLB movies r set .. most of his movies r set in 13th to 15th Century and not the 21st Century .. In that Era , social practices like Jauhar was indeed considered a symbol of honour for Rajput women as they choose to burn their bodies instead of becoming sex slaves for the Mughals or Khiljis ..They burnt their bodies because even their dead bodies were raped by the perverted conquerers of those times .. So sitting in 21st century and judging the 13th century women is extremely unfair as in those times those women dint hv any support or help in the form of high courts ,supreme courts or twitter feminists protesting with stylish hashtags to support those women after their husbands die ..

And those who hv seen this movie will clearly see SLB has smartly shown two women making 2 different choices .. There was one Rajput women in the beginning of the movie who choose to live the life of a Sex slave for Khilji instead of dieing .. She was chained and made to stand like a statue in front of Khilji and then Khilji starts playing with her body the way he wants .. And then there is another Rajput women Padmaavati , who choose to burn her body in fire instead of becoming Khilji's slave .. So its not like SLB showed only Jauhar was an option .. He actually showed both the choices that two women made in this movie .. Now its upto the Audience watching the movie and deciding whose choice was better .. Feminists hv no right to dictate their choices on these 13th century women by sitting in 21st century .. So they better watch this movie again and see that if Padmaavati did Jauhar , then there is another women who dint do jauhar and choose to b his sex slave .. there was no 3rd option available in those times .. So what else the women would do ? One can argue oh Padmaavati can fight Khilji .. For that too a subtle justification was shown in the movie when Khilji's men build a tent around surrounding the entire area of Rajputs , so that rice and grains cannot go from that route to the Palace , reason why entire Palace including the villagers had to eat only from the preserved grains ; Most of the food was supplied to male soldiers as they had to fight a battle reason why Rajputi women dint get enough food to eat in those times .. Their body was physically not strong enough to fight a monster like Khilji and their men yet they fought before doing Jauhar .. If one has seen the movie then one cannot miss the terrific climax when all Rajputi women throw hot coal on Khilji and injure him badly .. But what more can they do ? After a point they had to submit themselves when all their men were defeated already .. So they prefer to defeat Khilji instead by burning their bodies .. Thats why Jauhar was considered as symbol of honour and the way it was shown , I dont think any feminist in right mind will question it .. And if someone says today's youth might get wrong msg and jump in fire after taking inspiration from Rani Padmaavati , then I will say unfortunately today's youth r all donkeys because Padmaavati did Jauhar as that was the last option left to defeat Khilji .. Whereas today's youth hv many options to fight against their enemies starting from Police to Court to the so called social feminists sitting 24/7 on twitter to help them out .. Did Padmavati had any such help ? Ask yourself ..So in those times her act was considered brave and something to b proud of as unlike many other women of those times , she refused to become a sex slave and instead burnt her body so that Khilji can only get her ashes and nothing else ..It was her choice and her way of defeating her enemy .. Also its a fact that did happen in that century .. So when a director is showing fact , u hv a problem and when a director is fictionalising a fact , then too u hv a prob ..Lol ..For me the Climax was the best part of this movie when the Woman do Jauhar and Khilji is shown running like a Lunatic to stop them but the women close the door on his face .. I felt proud myself as a women seeing the monster's defeat ...Entire climax literally gives u goosebumps in those last 15 mins and u wont b able to stop your tears coming out from your eyes .. Tears of pride in this case ...I dunno why Karni Sena is having a problem with the movie because it actually makes u feel proud of what Rani Padmavati did .. Its only glorifying her bravery and the biggest defeat of Khilji .. Deepika completely steals the show in this Jauhar Sequence .. Her eyes raging fire while walking towards the fire place gives u goosebumps ..She was excellent , poised and dignified throughout in this sequence ...Ranveer as Khilji was terrific too in the climax when like a lunatic he is running towards the Fireplace to get just one glimpse of Padmavati but fails to do so .. That desperation in his eyes while chasing her in the climax was outstandingly brought out by Ranveer .. This got to b his best performance till date hands down ..

Theres another debate going on about Ranveer might hv gone OTT and Shahid was monotonous .. I think many failed to realise that this is exactly how SLB wanted Ranveer and Shahid to portray their respective characters ...If one is hot headed monster then another is suppose to b restrained cool and dignified ...If one is a practical conquerer cum cheater who believed only one rule works in a battle and that is the rule to win even if its achieved by cheating then the other is a principled rajput king who believed only one rule works in a battle and that is the rule of principles ..For mango people like us Khilji might b more entertaining as he dont hv much preachings or lectures to give and so easily likable but thats where Ratan Singh character becomes more difficult to portray for an actor as he will hv to convince the people that lectures r not always boring if seen from the perspective of a King who has social responsibilities to fulfill towards his people as well as family especially when enemy is standing right in front of u trying every way to intimidate u and make u loose your temper but u cant , so those same Rajputana preachings and lectures becomes your weapon or medicine to keep u cool and calm .
.
Khilji is suppose to b ruthless , caricaturish , wild , mannerless and a complete junglee ..So his OTTness is deliberate .. They hv shown how he emotionally manipulates his own soldiers to fight the war when their chips were down .. He goes OTT in that scene and does a fake cry act ..so when an actor is suppose to fake in front of his own men and emotionally manipulate them , he had to go OTT as an actor .. But as soon as his men r convinced with his fake act , he turns back and stylishly blinks at his commander in chief thus silently indicating him that My OTTness is an act I put up to keep my men under my control ..Thats where Ranveer shines as Khilji bec he excellently balances his act between OTTness and restrain when needed..He goes OTT when he puts up a fake act in front of those he wants to manipulate but then in next scene goes back to his monsterous serious self when he is needed to strategize ...But in all this we get a glimpse of the real emotional side of Khilji only once and that is in front of his wife Mehrunisa after he learns that she backstabbed him ..When his wife is chained and brought in front of him , I thought again he will go OTT and kill her like he did with Mehrunisa's father but to my surprise , Khilji's eyes got moist with anger and for the first time he showed his real emotions here when he asked her why did she do this .. He dint kill her but only gave her life imprisonment .. A monster like Khilji dont kill his wife despite her biggest betrayal of helping Ratan Singh and Padmavati to escape .. Isn't it unbelievable ? ..But this is where I could feel mayb just mayb he did love his wife Mehrunisa in real but this real emotions got overshadowed amidst his ruthless personality of a conquerer .. How did I depict all this .. Well I depicted all this because of the amazing display of wide range of emotions that Ranveer as Khilji portrayed in the movie from going OTT before killing or manipulating anyone to going venomnous and devilicious before strategising his next move to becoming monsterous when he single handedly kills his own chacha and nephew to finally showing his human side for a spilt second while dealing with his wife who just betrayed him to showing his final desperation in the end when he is longing to get one glimpse of Padmavati .. I dont remember any actor or character in recent times who got to play with such wide range of emotions in a movie .. Khilji is one hell of a complicated character and to understand his different emotions on different occasions , one really needs a second watch hahaa .. Needless to say Ranveer simply nailed it on screen .. From his Look to his expressive eyes to his body language to his dialogue delivery to his perfect balance between going OTT and restraining himself depending on the particular scenes , he was brilliant and definitely deserves all the awards next year .. Ranveer as Khilji is probably one of the strongest villain we got in recent times .. Take a Bow

But this is exactly why for me Shahid stands out as the Hero of the film because unlike Khilji , Rawal Ratan Singh is suppose to b restrained and keep just one plain look of a dignified rajput king who is not affected at all even when Khilji in front of him does all sorts of caricaturish acts to intimidate him .. He is not suppose to scream or act OTT like Khilji because he is suppose to b the dignified king and not a brutal conquerer like Khilji .. So one might find Shahid as Ratan Singh boring but for me thats the real intention of his character ..Its suppose to b boring and monotonous so that Khilji after a point gets irritated and affected seeing Ratan singh not reacting to his advances ...Thats what SLB tried to achieve by showing two diametrically opposite characters in Khilji and Ratan Singh .. If Khilji was Loud and Monster then Ratan Singh was the Cooling effect ...Khilji wanted a reaction from Ratan Singh when he betrays his trust by kidnapping him after calling him for friendly dinner but even then Ratan singh is suppose to keep his cool and keep that one look in his eyes intact , look of rajput pride and that look is what intimidating Khilji .. Khilji's reactions r result of Ratan Singh's restrained act .. Thats where Shahid is fab for me as at no point the actor in Shahid got intimidated by the loudness of Khilji and tried to compete with him on same level .. Instead he competes with him by keeping himself completely in character ..He knew that his role is not a author backed one and so he lets Khilji take the center stage in several scenes but thats where he excels as an actor because his graph as Ratan Singh remains amazingly constant throughout the movie , exactly how it was suppose to b , at no point he tries to overact or go OTT because that is Khilji's department .. Khilji is suppose to b the lunatic in the movie and not Ratan Singh .. So because the actor Shahid was so restrained with his performance , the villain looked larger than life and thats exactly what SLB was trying to achieve and both his actors supported his vision perfectly here ..

Watch out for Khilji and Ratan Singh's dual fight in pre-climax scene .. It was brillaintly executed .. Fast , Crisp and perfect Talwarbaazi between both .. Here too Ratan Singh defeated Khilji but its Khilji's men who cheated and killed Ratan from back but still he chooses to die with his head held high without bowing down to Khilji .. So Karni sena's nonsense about how Ratan was shown weaker than Khilji argument completely fails here as Khilji was shown the weaker one here .. Needless to say both the guys nailed the fight sequence ..

Now comes Deepika's performance .. Let me start by saying she looks breathtakingly beautiful in the movie .. I think she looked her best so far in this movie .. And every jewellery she wore in the movie were quite authentic and gave the Rajput feel ..She dint hv much to do in first half but her role was suppose to look beautiful as its her beauty which was the cause of this whole war in the first place .. Her beauty only resulted in that Brahmachari Pandit secrelty lusting over her , reason why he was removed from the State and so out of vengence he went and joined Khilji and told him about Padmavati's beauty which made Khilji curious and out of curiosity and later desperation he waged a war against Rajputs .. So those who r arguing that all Deepika had to do was look beautiful , need to realise that , her beauty is one of the most important aspect of the Movie because her same beauty raged a war just like Helen of Troy ..But her character comes in real action in second half when Ratan Singh is Abducted by Khilji .. Thats when for the first time Padmavati starts unleasing her intelligence and smart presense of mind by managing to flee away Ratan Singh from Khilji's own Den ...Thats when we see her as the ruthless Ranjput princess cum warrior who makes a fool out of Khilji by making him kill that backstabber Brahmachari pandit with his own hands .. She uses his weakness as her strength in a brillaint manner and Deepika shines in these scenes ..

My personal fav scene in the entire movie got to b the scene between Khilji's wife Mehrunisa and Padmavati when Padmavati turns back from the tunnel and looks at Mehrunisa to thank her for helping them to escape irrespective of the consequences that she later will hv to face .. That look exchange between Mehrunisa and Padmavati was wonderfully captured and for once we could see a slight glimpse of how humanity still exists even between two enemy camps ..Aditi Rao as Mehrunisa was extremely elegant and poised with her act .. She knows her husband is a monster who even killed her father but yet she wants to free him of these sins , reason why she helpled Padmavati .. At some level I guess even Khilji understood why she did what she did and so dint kill her .. I really loved this Mehrunisa and Khilji confrontation scene later post her betrayal .. It was extremely intense and emotional ..Both Ranveer and Aditi were fab in it..

A special shout out for Jim Sarab as Malik Kafur who is suppose to Khilji's right hand cum almost his Gay partner lol .. Normally Gay partners r mostly mocked in hindi movies or their depiction is shown in funny way but here they hv actually shown how a gay relation is .. Malik Kafur's jealousy when he sees Khilji's lust for Padmaavati r some scenes where Jim is fab as the Gay partner .. Binte Dil song sequence got to b the best one in the film as it was shockingly bold yet done in a aesthetic way .. One cannot even imagine that we will hv a song sequence between Malik kafur and Khilji but the way its shot in the film , one got to watch it ..

A lot is being said about Ghoomer song as well , errmm again guys watch the movie before making judgements .. So one of the old lady in Queen's palace was showing ghoomer steps to Rani padmavati and other dasis tell her u hv grown old , our rani can do it better .. so in Queen's palace only Padmavati does the ghoomer dance in front of Badi ranisa (ratan singh's 1st wife) and other ladies too join her .. It was a dance inside the queen's palace when queens were just entertaining themselves .. Padmavati was not dancing in front of any Rajsabha or front of any men .. They even made it clear that we will hv all Queen's party and entertainment today , so no men should enter .. Only king is allowed to watch if he wishes .. So I dunno from where the opposition is coming from as its a fact that queens used to entertain themselves in their own palace by singing and dancing during those times as there was no other modes of entertainment .. For the records she dint dance in front of any men or in front of any sabha .. lol ..And it was a beautifully picturised and choreographed song sequence ..

On the flipside , I dint really like the romantic sequences that were shown between Ratan and Padmavati in Sri Lanka , thankfully the pace of those scenes were fast or else I would hv got bored .. I feel director dint give much thought in developing the chemistry between Shahid and Deepika which mayb the biggest drawback of the movie .. Both actors did hv potential to create a crackling chemistry though as it was evident in one of their intimate sequence just before the Brahmachari gets caught but the writing when it comes to their husband-wife moments were poor and monotonous , reason why it dint create the kind of impact it should hv created .. But in the overall picture , its a tiny thing and can b overlooked conveniently as there r several other things which stood out in the movie ..

Overall Padmavati is a movie worth watching on big screen for its spectacular visual appeal , some really well crafted war strategy sequences and a gripping story telling ..Movie Glorifies the Rajput Aan Baan Shaan but it willl b wrong to say that it does injustice with Muslims as characters like Mehrunisa does full justice when it comes to honouring the muslim community as well.. So dont watch it as a war of hindu vs muslims .. watch it as a war of Good (Ratan-Padmavati) vs the Evil (Khilji) and u will love it ..Also its a historical movie and not a documentary in contemporary times lol, so for once keep your feminist and liberal minds at rest while watching a movie thats set in 13th century ..I will give the movie 4 stars ...I m sucker for such larger than life canvas movies especially when I watch them on big screen and compare to Bajirao mastani , this one is more historically accurate as well ..

oc. The poem actually about Khilji (muslem) and his obsession toward Padmavati. Bad thing for muslem. That why everything has related with Khilji.

1st half is introduction for Khilji and 2nd half about his obsession to Padmavati. I think the love scene between Deepika and Shahid made by SLB himself. 😆 .(if it really has made base on poem). 😛

Watched Padmavati two days ago.
First thing. I watched PV because, I like movies with historical backdrop. I did not view this movie because of the controversy. So please don't credit KarniSena for my ticket.

When it comes to Bhansali's movies (whether we love them or or hate them), one thing is certain. We can't say, we will watch it later, when it comes to Netflix. The grandeur can only be experienced at theatre.
Ashutosh Gowarikar also spends lot of budget. But his budget goes in addressing meticulous details for authentic look. Bhansali's budget goes in creating dramatic effect with diyas etc. Ordinary junta probably will not bother about authencity. So, for us, Bhansali's film look richer than AG's movies.

-------

Actors:

Ranveer: I have to applaud him for his script sense. He was actually offered the lead role. But he saw the potential in the villain role. Two years back, I thought he made a mistake. Khilji was not even an anti hero. He was an out and out villain. Whether it was his gut feeling or Deepika's suggestion (who chose Veronica against Meera in Cocktail), I wonder. But he won the gamble.

(Spoiler)----
His expressions are defenitely not over the top. One example. When he kills his nephew. All we see is his stone face and his nephew kicking the bed helplessly. At the end, we see Ranveer's cold blooded look.
It reminded me Ajay Devgan in Company (when he kills his own men for breaching) and Amir Khan in Earth (when he finds about Nandita Das after tricking the child).
It is not the hamming which usually Sharukh or Hritik do. His chin remains stable. His breathing does not get louder. Only his eyes. It is spine chilling. (I am not mocking at SRK or Hritik. At that time, their acting looked best. With time, our perception starts changing).
----- (End spoiler)

Deepika Padukone : First on Ghoomar. Stunning visual setting and her captivating screen presence. There is something about her dances in SLB's films. Obviously many kids will perform them on their annual school day. Tomorrow, she will become part of their nostalgia as Madhuri and Sridevi were once. One might find my comparison strange as ranges/reaches of these songs are entirely different. Madhuri/Sri's popular dances were item numbers. Deepika's popular dances are more into classical. Also Deepika is definitely not as good dancer as Madhuri or Sri. But fact remains, her dances connect to the crowd in the same way. May be the settings, may be her beauty.
Whatever it is, she adds another dance number along with Diwani Mastani, Nagada, which (one should admit) is responsible for initial days (not just first, I went on the third day) collection.

Her acting as princess and queen. Once or twice I felt, the teary eyed expression was not needed. Except that, her acting is brilliant. I feel like laughing at the people who say, she had not many dialogues (means there was no acting required). Movie Pushpak had no dialogue. Does that mean, Kamal Hassan did not act?
Her role demanded every kind of expression. Vivacious princess, determined queen, passionate wife and a gloomy woman expecting the arrival of the darkest hour. She played every emotions perfect. Usually her dialogue delivery lets her down. Here somehow, they were not very distracting for me. (May be Malik Kafur's was so distracting that I did not notice Deepika's).

Shahid : Unfortunately, I don't have many good things to say. Whether the script let him down or he let the script down will be million dollar question. May be both.
The fact that Khilji's character attracted Ranveer more than Ratan during script reading implies Ratan's character was weak to begin with. Probably after Ranveer choosing to Khilji's role, SLB made Ratan's role even weaker. We ended up seeing a Yudhistir, who preaches about ethics all the time, while Bhim and Arjun (here Gora and Badal) are left to fight.
First is his physique. When he is looking at enemy's army from the fort along with other soldiers. He just does not look royal with his tiny frame. Second, the dress designers. Who designed those pink feminine salwars for him? Fire them. I could not enjoy his chemistry with Deepika too. Deepika looks better with matured faces (SRK or Irfan never looked odd with Deepika). Shahid can still do SOTY 2 and look younger than Tiger. I felt, their pair was a mismatch.
Basically, it was a poorly written character. On the top, Shahid did not fit the role.

-----

Music:

I am sorry. But Bhansali needs to realise his limitation as a music director. Ghoomar song is ofcourse based on Rajasthani folk tune. But Bhansali tweaks it to sound it more classical. A song does not need to based on classical music, to be a classic. Songs composed by IlayaRaja, Lakshmikant Pyarelal were based on folk music and had earthy feeling to them.
No doubt, Bhansali designs classical tunes, which most of the current lot cannot do. But the point should be on the relevance. Beauty lies with simplicity. That holds true for music too.
Once S. D. Barman had said, "My songs should be that simple that even my car driver should be able to sing". It is not that, he did not know how to compose classical songs. But he did them, only if they were necessary. Shiv Hari is a great classical musician. But whenever he composed music for Yash Chopra, the songs (even though they were based on raags) were pretty simple.
Unlike them, Bhansali creates songs (which in fact reminds me of old classical Bollywood songs) that cannot be hummed by most.
To me, the best tunes in the movie were the background music in the beginning of the movie (when titles were shown). It sounded typical Rajasthani. (I wish, there was a song with that music). Other one is the background music during Jauhar. That is so gloomy and haunting. Rest, I would call it average (Ghoomer and Bin Te Dil, both gave me "heard somewhere" feel).

--------

Script Writing

Padmavati is a story we have heard from childhood. When it comes on screen, it is natural tendency to watch it on screen. A serial based on Mahabharata will get high TRP, no matter how badly it is made. Bhansali should be applauded for coming out with this idea. But one trouble. Plot is wafer thin. One needs creativity to stretch this. Also limitations of not hurting people's sentiments. It is a gamble. Bhansali is not perfect. But he has won this gamble, that is what matters.

(Spoiler)----
There were no proper build up story for Padmavati and Ratan (Bhansali should take lessons from Ekta/Gul). . It was BaijiRao - Mastani Part II; Instant love. Instead, they could have been shown as being married in the beginning of the movie itself. It would have made no difference to the movie. But Raghav Chetan's rivalry needed more build up. The reason to banish him looked trivial and his bitterness/revenge feeling also seemed suddenly enforced. If Bhansali wanted to take creative liberty, he should have taken it here.

Character sketching of Ratan Singh.

Vasool is fine. But where is the bravery part? As I said earlier, he was as boring as Mahabharat's Yudhistir. My patience was tested all the time high, when Padmavati succeeded in releasing him. First of all, this fellow came against their wishes and got arrested. Now they have used all their tricks to release him. Here he goes and says, "I have to meet Khilji before leaving". Have some common sense man.

When Gora and Badal were fighting bravely and getting killed, the thought came to me. Did I see this Ratan dude lifting his sword any time? There you go. I was granted my wish. In palace, he lifted the sword with all spirit. We saw the splash of red in pond. Whose blood? A sacrificial lamb. Blah..
--- (end spoiler)

Problem was not just with Shahid (Of course, he does not have the physique). But it was the poor script writing which also lead the Ratan's character down.

--------------

Grandeur :

This is something, all SLB's viewers will go to his movies. (Watched 2D movie. So I cannot comment on 3D effect). Of course, he does not disappoint. The scenes especially when Ratan brings Padmavati to his palace till Ghoomer are so grand and aesthetically appealing.

(Spoiler)-----
But I cannot say the same on war scenes. In BM, first half of war scene was really good. Whether SLB got chickened after Bahubali, I don't know. But there are no memorable fighting scenes in PV. It was a waste, showing such huge army (which would have costed a lot), doing nothing. (Is the budget really that big, when there are no proper war scenes?).

In the beginning, we see the armies marching towards each other. Then we see the dust. When the dust settles, we see Khilji carrying enemy's head. What happened before is left for our imagination.

Fighting at the climax. Again a huge army. But all we see is, two rulers fighting with the sword in front of their army. Even that fight is not nail biting. (Bhansali could have hired a Chinese or Korean action directors. They choreograph sword fighting really well). Here, Ratan's and Khilji's fight was as entertaining as murgi fight.
---- (end spoiler)

------

My review ends here. My rating is 3 1/2.

Will I recommend to watch this movie? Defenitely yes. Why? Ghoomar, grandeour and Ranveer's and Deepika's act. A very thin story, compensated by stunning setting and great acting. Even supporting cast have a role and they have played them very well.
What could have made it better? A solid backing up story for Ratan and a star performer like Hritik. (A story will be balanced, only when both protogonist and antagonist are strong and equal. All Rajni's superhit movies usually have very strong antagonist and the lead beating them at the end). Here the movie was tilted towards antagonist.
