Things we would've missed watching if Padmaavat hadn't released at all

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat faced a lot of controversy and a demand for ban from several Rajput groups. Now that this Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor period drama has released, here are things that stood out for us.

Padmaavat actors Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmaavat is finally out and writing its own destiny. While its entire journey through the tables of the CBFC and at the hands of fringe groups will be remembered for a long time, we are grateful that it released. No, not because it gave a closure (almost) to an issue that had become a national debate (for some), but also because the world would've been different if Padmavati-turned-Padmaavat hadn't released at all! This article has spoilers (disclaimer) as it tries to explore what this magnum opus, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, gave Bollywood in its entire cinematic grandeur.

When Padmaavat was fighting for its identity, I believed it would go down in history as an example of how to stand by one's creative liberties. But now, it is a little more. The film also had elements that would be remembered for a long time in terms of performances and direction. Let me point out some.

Needless to say, Padmaavat has Bhansali's signature style of storytelling. Opulent and splendid, this film also boasts of all his patent colours. But what's new? Haven't we seen that all in his previous films like Bajirao Mastani and Devdas? Definitely yes, but this time he has gone a step higher a la 300 style war scenes. From the colour tone of its frames to the drone camera angles and even the kind of VFX, it is on similar lines, definitely not at par but something that can be noticed, all the more if seen in 3D-IMAX.

Padmaavat actor Ranveer SinghRanveer Singh played Alauddin Khilji in Padmaavat.

Padmaavat gave birth to an actor called Ranveer Singh too. No, I don't mean the Ranveer we've seen before. This time, he was different. Trust Bhansali to do the impossible or put his actors in the most challenging spot. From the lover-boy Ranveer we've mostly seen, to the barbaric and power hungry Alauddin Khilji, he has suddenly become an actor for all seasons. Prior to its release, we did hear of how Padmaavat will change the way we look at Ranveer. And that did happen. He played the self-loving and greedy Khilji, the most draconian villain in recent times, and this was no less than a gamble for him. Ranveer took this challenge when he is just 10 films down in Bollywood. This is at a time when actors wish to play it safe and simple, flex their muscles, romance their ladies and do some naach-gaana to win the audience.

Ranveer's risk could've easily gone wrong leaving a scratch on his filmography for a long time. But his hard work which went skin-deep, could be seen and the audience loved to hate him with open arms. Now, imagine what if this film was banned. We would've missed out on seeing Ranveer's best performance till date. We are happy that didn't happen!

Padmaavat actor Jim SarbhActor Jim Sarbh played Malik Kafur in Padmaavat.

There was another name who turned heads. This particular actor was the force behind Khilji's wickedness and cruelty. He was Malik Kafur, played by Jim Sarbh. The homosexual character who had so much love for his master Khilji, that he even tried to compare himself to Rani Padmavati. The undertones of this unique master-slave relationship was beautifully established, given the fact that Indian films are yet to achieve that creative freedom to show things as they are! Jim played his part like we could've never expected. Padmaavat surely brought out an unknown side of his acting, which remained hidden in his previous films.

Padmaavat actor Deepika PadukonePadmaavat actor Deepika Padukone portrayed Rani Padmavati.

Deepika Padukone replaced Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as Bhansali's muse with Ram-Leela. He manages to bring out the deepest beauty of all his leading ladies and just like Aish, he extracted the delicateness of Deepika with utmost perfection too. Deepika who is on a hattrick with Bhansali in Padmaavat has never looked this way. She plays Rani Padmavati who was known for her beauty, the sole reason why Khilji attached Chittor. Deepika has worn the most opulent costumes, the heaviest jewellery, but the simplicity and honour on her face and eyes made her a sight never seen before. Padmaavat, which she calls her most challenging film, surely brought out the best in her.

I cannot not mention Shahid Kapoor too. He is the latest entrant in the Bhansali camp and Padmaavat is his first period drama. From his varied roles in Udta Punjab and Haider to playing Rawal Ratan Singh, Shahid has undergone a lot of transformation. No more he shies away from picking difficult roles. And we all know, to satiate Bhansali, you have to be at least perfect on camera, if not anything more!

Padmaavat actor Shahid KapoorShahid Kapoor donned the role of Rawal Ratan SIngh in Padmaavat.

I would give Shahid brownie points for taking up Padmaavat where he knew he was not the main lead. The antagonist and even the leading lady were more powerful that him. But he kept aside all that and played a king with utmost poise and perfection.

This film was questioned for insulting the Rajputana aan-baan-shaan'. But only after its viewing, we know how much it rather upheld their usools' and its tenets. If only this film hadn't released, we would've never understood the valour of the Rajput kings and their principals. For some, the film had an overdose of this philosophy. But at the end of the day, here is one film which closely showed this community.

Padmaavat actors Deepika Padukone and Shahid KapoorPadmaavat faced trouble due to alleged distortion of historical facts.
Also, can I give extra points to Padmaavat's background score? For me, it was one of the most haunting, deeply striking music heard in recent times. It wasn't happy at all. Yet this sad tune was enough to teleport us into this particular story from our history and feel the pain and honour of those queens. This music occurs in the course of film whenever Deepika's Rani Padmavati is tested for her strength and dedication. From the film's opening credits to end credit roll, this music almost took us through the entire journey, and it continues to echo in my ears as I write this piece!

I loved the movie and so did my family.
It's Ranveer's movie. Period. He owns the movie. He plays the character like no body's business. Like a man possessed. He was simply terrific and lit up the screen with his terrific screen presence.
Others were good too. Of course. Shahid DP Aditi and the glorious Jim Sarv - all were good and did their parts well.
But frankly speaking with out Ranveer's bewitching Khilji and Jim's equally spontaneous organic Kafur this movie would simply have been a snooze fest.
I'm probably gonna back and write more about the movie. Still reeling under the charm of Ranveer even after 8 hrs of watching the movie. But I've a lot to say.

Same.. I am watching again tmroe. Ranveer was terrific. His presence was such that.. people got excited everytime he came on screen . SK in comparison paled. I dont know he looked out of sorts and dint seem like a king who commands respect .. ( read I m spoilt by Baahubali) but I felt Gora and Badal had more effect on me than him.

Padmaavat Has Huge Extended Weekend

Padmaavat recorded a huge extended weekend of 110 crore nett apprx which includes four days plus paid previews. This has been done with 25% of the total market missing over the four days. The real value of this business is around 145 crore nett if you apply the territory figures which would have come if it played all over.

The business on Sunday is 30 crore nett apprx which again is huge if we consider Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh missing and some other parts of the country. The film is looking the biggest outright Hindi film South India has seen as the collections started at record levels and have held. Mumbai / Maharashtra has also seen record collections.

The key belts of Delhi NCR and East Punjab are not huge but have trended very strong post Republic Day and look set for a good run. This area has never come on for a Bhansali film in a big way like this. Devdas did well enough but not great.

The film has done exceptionally well to get this far considering the release and now its about the crucial weekdays because due to the release problems and the huge cost it still has a bit of work to do despite the huge extended weekend business.

The film will hold as the trend is strong especially in places where the film could have have come down but the big question is how strong the hold will be and can it get close to the Thursday number or maybe even cross it if the it can get screenings at more places on Monday

The time period depicted in this magnificently shot film indicates, Vasco De Gama hadn't been born yet and it further meant, evil British hadn't arrived in India and had not brought with them the little metallic steel tweezers (hair pluckers), that women of today employ to pluck out the extra unwanted hair on their eyebrows.

BHANSALI INTERPRETATION BASED ON ABOVE FACT:

In 12th and 13th Century, fames and folklores about beauty of Royal Princesses and Queens spread around by how dense and thick their eye brows were. Thicker and denser the eyebrows of a Princess (Any woman for that matter), more beautiful she was. 😳

Metalic tongs and pliers that blacksmiths of Rajasthan used to make, were simply not meant for plucking out eye brow hair one by one and though thanks to wax of honeycombs, waxing of unwanted hair from forearms and legs was a mastered practice amongst harems of various forts and palaces across subcontinent, eye brows remained untamed, dense and thick as moss all across. 😛

Ignoring all screams and protests of Historians, Bhansali shows Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) as a maniacal bull type of character who gorges on meat-feasts, has stoned devilish looks, indulges in debauchery on his wedding night and obsessed about adding more and more dense eye brow Princesses and Eunuchs to his harem of Queens and concubines. He has a very dense eye brow Queen wife Mehrunnisa (Aditi Rao Hydari) and a Eunuch lover Malik Kafur (Jim Sarbh). Bhansali could not find more dense eye brow girls to play roles of Khilji's other real wives in life, Malika-E-Jahaan, Jhatyapali etc, so lets not divert to that side.👍🏼

So on one hand we have a stoned, maniacal, high on hormonal urges massive Bull like Alauddin, on the other side we have a pint sized khargosh look Rana Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor). Padmavati is the most beautiful girl of her times as she not only has dense eye brows but as if by a miracle, her two eyebrows are joined together actually and in Bhansali's adaptation, that makes her the dream woman of her times. Pint Sized Rana is approximately the same height as a fully grown male Deer, so very correctly, Bhansali shows arrow shot by single eyebrow Padmavati meant for Deer's heart piercing Rana's upper chest area on left side. Arrow pierces Ratan Singh's left upper side and bewitching beauty of Padmavati's joined eyebrows his heart, which is few cms below the arrow wound.

Pint sized Ratan Singh and Single eye brow Padmavati marry and return to a Palace of grandeur and opulence at Chittor.❤️

After few Bhansali dances and dialogues Ratan wants to kiss this incredible single eye brow but evil priest of Ratan one Raghav fellow too had gotten smitten by this single eye brow and he indulges in voyeurism, gets caught. Ratan wants him imprisoned but Padmavati wants disgraced Raghav to be exiled so that he tells the world how beautiful single eyebrow of Padmavati is.

Raghav marches to Delhi and brainwashes a drugs-stoned Alauddin Khilji. Khilji stops munching on kilograms of lamb meat, stops dancing to entertain his soldiers, hell even stops his bath tubs session with his Eunuch paramour Malik Kafur (Dense eye browed Jim Sarbh silly).

Mehrunnisa (Aditi Rao Hydari), whose dense eye brows any way were not getting any attention of Khilji is devastated by Khilji's new obsession to have single eye brow bewitching beauty Padmavati in his harem.

Mehrunnisa's simple logic is Khilji is totally into drugs and debauchery but why the hell he should have this testosterone urge of "One more for me'? She tries impressing Khilji with beauty of her forest thick eye brows, but Khilji says your eyebrows are not joined together and come what may, I want Padmavati.😈

Alauddin Khilji invites Khargosh Ratan and Single Eye Brow beauty Padmavati to enjoy his hospitality, but they refuse.

Malik Kafur tries convincing Khilji his eye brows are dense and most beautiful and Khilji should not try to bring a Souten of Kafur but Khilji slaps him and lays seize of Chittorgarh Fort.

Pint sized Ratan Singh goes into a huddle with his advisors. Edited out versions reveal his Ministers told him we have ration meant to last only few months and if seize of fort goes on, we will die of hunger inside the fort. 😭

Bhansali's Ratan Singh says austerity and strict rationing would send wrong signals so we must have grandest of Sanjay Leela Bhansali celebrations on Holi-Diwali-Lohri-Onam-Baisakhi-Christmas even Guru Nanak Jayanti! ---His Minister tells him Guru Nanak will be born after 200 years, so they give up on Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations, but celebrate all other festivals in grandeur and style! So Team Khargosh is shown having a ball while Team Beast is visibly starving.🥳

In exasperation, Khilji gives up after 8-9 months and volunteers to come alone to enjoy Ratan Singh's hospitality. Obviously his intention is to be just able to see this beautiful single eye brow woman, but then saying that openly would be red rag to Karni Sena. So Bhansali disguises it nicely and Khilji eats to his heart's content while looking around for beauty with joined eye brows.☺️

Its time for goodbye and Khilji's raging hormones can take it no more.

He requests to be shown joined eye brows, Pint Sized Ratan throws a fit and then Bhansali logic takes over.

Khilji who gave up on the idea of continuing seize of Chittorgarh Fort and in a way lost the battle, gets a sudden unexpected bonanza and Ratan Singh shows him Padmavati (Or Padmavat?), but she vanishes even before Alauddin's blink gives him a chance to focus on her eye brow region.😕

"Show me the eye brows, ...show me the eyebrows... Khilji pleads and screams.😲

"No way you will get to see the eye brows... 😡 Pint Sized Ratan Singh dismisses the Bull Khilji pleadings and confrontation resumes.⭐️

Yet again, Bhansali logic takes over again. 👏

8 Months of wasted time in seize of fort, it hadn't occurred to dumb Khilji that he also had fire canon balls that could be catapulted to smash open fort walls and end the seize within minutes. Finally wiser, he returns with the arsenal and starts bombarding the fort left, right and center.

I started yawning at this point and do not recall what all happened thereafter.

Anyway why not give few spoilers for an out and out spoiled movie? 😕

Of what I remember, Khargosh comes to dine with Beast, Beast does a hahahaha and arrests Khargosh, one eye browed beauty Padmoo gets enraged and taking help of Mehru, the Dense eye browed wife of beast Khilji, rescues her Cheeku Khargosh.

Bhansali's Khilji has nothing better to do in life so like an obsessed moron, he once again leaves his Delhi throne and charges for Chittor. Shame on present day Delhites who feel lazy to visit their friends and relatives in NOIDA or Indirapuram, that too in the comforts of their Air Conditioned cars.

Finally, the Khargosh comes out and its pint sized Khargosh vs tank like Bull fight. Bhansali logic takes over again and Lo and behold...Bull is on the verge of getting vanquished. Predictable behaviour from treachorus side yet again and valiant Khargosh gets martyred. 😭

Khilji starts screaming in delight,WOW------Yayyy--------Now I will get to see one eyebrow beauty, I will get to see Padmavati... But Padmavati says go to hell and immolates herself and in the process, her beautiful single line eye brow as well.😭

Khilji returns to his dense eye brow Mehrunnisa and to Malik Kafur, his Eunuch lover who incidentally has the best eye brows in film! 😛

--------------------------------------------------

A couple fight got audio-recorded from a Bungalow at Bandra.

KAJOL: Sanjay Leela Bhansali is your friend na? You did one film with him naa? That Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam? 😲

AJAY: Haan. Ki maine wo film. Toh? 😕

KAJOL: Gardan tedhi mat karo. -------------Film shoot nahin hai ye. -----------Ki maine matlab? -------------You didn't know Bhansali needed a one eye brow girl for Padmavati?-------TUMNE MERA NAAM KYUN SUGGEST NAHIN KIYA? 😡

AJAY: Arey yaar---Main khud ro raha hoon. Bhansali ne mujhe Khilji ke role ke liye poochha tak nahin! Aur tu hai ki? Padmavati...hunhhh 😕

KAJOL: Cheater! Cheater! Cheater! Cheater! Cheater! Cheater! Cheater! Cheater! Ajay is a Cheater! Bhansali is a Cheater, Cheater, Cheater. Cheater! Cheater! Cheater! Cheater! Oh God! 😡

PS:

1.
Wondering! Had Bhansali named this film as EYEBROWSVATI or EK BHAUNHVATI, not one protest would have been there, not one cut demanded. Sad! :(

Was that supposed to be funny? And what was the point of dragging Kajol into all of this? And SERIOUSLY what is everyone's fascination with Kajol's unibrow? I see self-proclaimed feminists mocking her when it was she who broke all the norms of the industry to reach the top. #StayMad.
