The theme music still resonates after I saw it this morning, it's one thing that's deeply imprinted in my mind. It's definitely unique in that it fits all 3 characters- turning sinister to hopeful, to fiery with the 'Rani sa' chant at the crescendo.
Likewise, I think all 3 characters had their time to shine, I like how the narrative flits to and fro Khilji-Afghanistan, Padmavati, Ratan- Chittor.
-Thought it made a refreshing change how Khilji appeared in comical light, the best part about his character was his
'humble' beginning. There was something quite endearing about his wooing with the ostrich and the way he revelled in Mehru's laughter.
That eccentricity added that layer as opposed to if it was just one tone of barbaricism.
-For once, I finally get the hype of DP-Shahid pairing, I loved how Ratan almost worshipped her with his deep, attentive gaze to actually touching her feet in the Holi song.
-Never been much of a Shahid fan but he should get more due with this role, his dialogue delivery was on point- the Rajput bravery talks would have sounded drab from any other actor. Just the sheer earnestness he lends to the character which I think only he could amongst the current crop of actors. I think he fills more depth than SLB had provided, it's clearly a vehicle for Khilji and Padmavati to shine yet he stands out despite being an 'enabler'. Definitely his better performances.
-Love the play-off between Shahid-Ranveer, it's quite uncanny how they come across as Mufasa-Scar, with Ratan's unending valour and pride and Khilji's bored drawl. And Padmavati-Ratan as Nala-Simba with their playful devotion, weird analogy, I know.
-Probably in the minority here, but found nothing novel about Kafar-Khilji's 'subtle' bond, somehow it played out just like I thought it would. Binte Dil was not needed, it would have played out perfectly fine without that as well as Khiji's victory dance.
-Some very predictable instances- like Khilji returning with the Mongol ruler's head. Ratan's unflailing morals yet again causing his death. Rajput warrirors emerging from the red ghoongats- ode to Troy?..lol
Even the palette, switing from Grey to Red-Cream but that's just how SLB rolls I guess. Thankfully not much furore/ attention paid over Ratan's second marriage.
-Scene that I'm surprised I liked- Goro Singh fighting after his head was cut off- chilling case of rigor mortis?..
-Ranveer was awesome in the way he inspired for a lack of a better word his dejected army by letting the flag fall- not a Braveheart type of speech but befitting of his Khilji, half arsed yet so effective.
-What prompted Mehrunisa to assist Padmavati, why was she scandalised that Khilji wanted to take on another man's wife, when there was much do about nothing about the other Hindu queen (from Delhi) he placed in his harem?
-After the rough deal DP got in BM, think she is fully validated here, got the chance to lead from the front. I really take back my words about her not looking pretty- she looked the best in her first and last shot. I think her dialogue delivery was put to the test, and she delivered in her speech when inspiring other women to have courage. Her voice has such a nice flowy, feminine texture but there was that added strength- just the right dose, not that you expect her to shout, 'FREEDOM' but it's empowering in the apt way for the scene, well as 'empowering' as jauhar was ever going to be-not that I support it's so called glorification (gosh this is like adding the disclaimer of Smoking being injurious to health). I'm glad her 2 year wait was not totally wasted.
She looked so strikingly fierce and stunning in the last shot- definitely an unattainable treasure worth having but
'you're never gonna have my body' (inappropriate Sheila Ki Jawaani reference).
