First Review Padmaavat by Umair Sandhu
JANUARY 22, 2018 / UMAIR SANDHU

Sanjay Leela Bhansali was determined to make a film on the lives of Padmavati and Khaliji for quite some time now. The supremely talented raconteur kept vacillating between numerous actors, before he chose on the present star cast of PADMAAVAT. Although historicals were well-liked and commercially feasible, if I may add at a point of time, the swelling budgets and comprehensive study and research that went into making a historical compelled quite a few present-day film-makers to abandon their dream projects and opt for contemporary themes. Bhansali stood his ground and waited for the opportune time to commence the project in question.

Padmaavat is Bhansali's most ambitious project to date. The love story, the conflict, the dramatic altercations, the battle sequences and of course, the ostentatious setting... It is an enthralling period film that transports you to an era you had only read about in the history books. At the same time, Bhansali introduces the on-screen characters and the sequence of events with utmost simplicity so that the enthusiastic spectator is able to get the grip of the goings-on effortlessly.

Clearly, Bhansali seems to be motivated by the classics helmed by the Hollywood counterparts. He has a splendid sense of narrating an epic tale, which is evident when you think of the gigantic scale of the film. The battle sequences are awe-inspiring and have been executed with magnificence. The production design is eye-filling and makes you acknowledge the effort that must've gone into recreating the long-gone era. The apparel as well as the styling of the characters is truly majestic.

Bhansali seamlessly weaves music in the historical. Filmed with care, the songs [also composed by Bhansali] are mesmeric and have been choreographed with precision. The ones that stand out is Ghoomer. The background score is wonderful. Padmaavat is gorgeously lensed, with the DoP capturing the colors, setting and emotions meticulously. Editing is crisp.

Bhansali makes sure the actors get major acting opportunities this time. Ranveer Singh is stupendous and clearly in top form. He holds you attentive right from the first frame till the penultimate moments. The effortlessness with which he gets into the skin of the character is noteworthy. It must be said that this is his finest work to date. Deepika is enchanting as Padmavati and displays the strength as an actor in several pertinent episodes. She gave Career Best Performance ever. Shahid Kapoor Steals the Show all the way. He Nailed it !!! Loved his Romance with deepika. Aditi Rao Hyderi will surprise u. Supporting Cast is Top Notch.

On the whole, Padmaavat is a cinematic gem that you just cannot miss. Tremendous performances, deft direction, power-packed screenwriting and dialogue, melodious soundtrack and of course, the lavish mounting this film has it all. Strongly recommended!

The film will not be screened in four states -
Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat and
Rajasthan. Of course, the collections would
be affected - but how much - this would
only be cleared after the film is on the
screen for the public to review.
We got in touch with trade gurus to know
the exact numbers that the film will earn on
day 1. But before that let's get into the
maths of the budget of the film.
Production Budget: INR 225 crore
Prints and Advertising Cost: INR 25 crore
Screen Count: 3800 + (Approx)
Recovery:
Satellite Rights - INR 75 Crore
Music Rights - INR 25 Crore
Digital Rights - INR 25 Crore
Overseas Rights - INR 25 Crore
Total Recovery - INR 150 Crore
The film has to earn INR 300 crore to be in
the safe zone!
Here's what the trade gurus have to say:
Amod Mehra
First and foremost, if you considering the
first day to be which is the paid
review, we don't have a clue about the
screens. But, if you take into
consideration, it's not a holiday - but we
expect a bumper house opening -
something around INR 30 crore on Day One
and rest it all depends on the content.
Talking about advance booking, it's great
especially in Mumbai - both IMAX and 3D
screens.
Atul Mohan
Advance booking is really good in the
regions - Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. If you
ask me about the first-day figures, it's really
difficult as till now - there's not much that I
know about the screen count. It will be
cleared by . The controversy
around the film has affected the film and
when you don't have screens in places like
MP, Haryana, Gujarat and Rajasthan - it's a
little difficult. Talking about figures, I can say
the film would earn INR 12 crore to INR 15
crore.
Akshaye Rathi
Looking at the anticipation around the film, I
am pretty sure the collections would be in
tune to around INR 20 crore. Despite the
film would not get the screens in many
areas, I am still very confident that film will
get good numbers. I am sure the figures will
be extraordinary throughout the week. The
status advance booking is amazing in 3D
and IMAX properties. Well, yes the
controversy has affected the film especially
in places like Rajasthan. The screen count of
the film is 3800 plus.

I added spoiler alert.

P.S. The theater owners are not compelled to show the movie. It is their right to refuse. Raj, Guj, MP nd Bihar cinemas will not be showing the movie. It is an unofficial ban nd the courts cannot force them to show the movie as they are well within their legal rights to not display a movie if they so desire.

The SC order is against the state government banning the film and not against theater owners voluntarily refusing to show the movie.
