Why can't she be named Durga? Durga is not just the definition of divine power in India but is also the most revered and worshipped Goddess. She is worshipped in every part of India in different forms. There have been several films where the woman protagonist has been shown as a symbolic representation of power, like Kahaani, etc. The film is based in Kerala during Garuda Thookam where people worship Kali and parallely they show the journey of the protagonist Durga, a north Indian immigrant at night. No one is calling the goddess sexy. It is those miscreants who on one hand worship female power and on the other look at women as sex objects and this hypocrisy is what the film is trying to address. And it is not about rapists or abusers, it is about us and our hypocrisy. I don't think the director ever mentioned that the film is going to change the plight of women in the country. And the film shows the journey of both the Durgas. The goddess who is worshipped and celebrated and a human sharing the same name who is seen as flesh for consumption. It's very symbolic and for people to understand the symbolism, it needs be seen and for that reason, films like these should not be banned or taken put of competition just like that.
