Yes I think being empowered to have sex with someone I choose and being able to refuse it even to my own husband if I don't feel like it is empowerment. But that is not the only thing that I equate to empowering women. Not that I expect you to understand

Say, I want to make a movie on child labour. Throughout the movie I will show, how the child was exploited. At the end there is a scene where the child throws stone at his master's house and breaks the window.
Can I call this as empowerment? (Some kind of liberation, may be. Just a temporary release of frustration). But breaking the convention (or rules), will not equate to empowerment. In the movie, what did the women achieve? They would be still tied to their husbands, taking care of their mother in law and economically dependent.
Compare that with English Vinglish. Sridevi's character vents out her frustration in a constructive way, which makes her independent and get respect.

Chalo, I have heard so much of empowerment in is thread that I am getting reminded of Rahul G.

Wouldn't we all co exist happily if Muslim and Christian members of the forum stopped judging Hindus for crying over what they feel is offensive to their sensibilities?
What if we start nameping movies bachchabaaz Mohammad or randibaaz/fraudster Christ and keep defending as freedom of expression?

If Sexy Durga banning is regression, reporting/removing this comment from here or raising my warning level will also be considered regression by religiously intolerant moderaters.

I don't think so.
Even if you find it offensive, it's my freedom of expression.
Let's deal with it.😆

how will naming a character durga improve women's plight in India? girls of all names and religions get abused ... naming someone durga will not save them from abuse because abusers are monsters who don't care abt faith, religion & righteousness... and these monsters need to be dealt with strenght not with sexiness...

Durga didn't need the support of any man to help fight her battles... she fought her battles on her own...with her strength not sexiness... so I don't understand what kind of symbolism the movie is trying to portray? 😕

Why can't she be named Durga? Durga is not just the definition of divine power in India but is also the most revered and worshipped Goddess. She is worshipped in every part of India in different forms. There have been several films where the woman protagonist has been shown as a symbolic representation of power, like Kahaani, etc. The film is based in Kerala during Garuda Thookam where people worship Kali and parallely they show the journey of the protagonist Durga, a north Indian immigrant at night. No one is calling the goddess sexy. It is those miscreants who on one hand worship female power and on the other look at women as sex objects and this hypocrisy is what the film is trying to address. And it is not about rapists or abusers, it is about us and our hypocrisy. I don't think the director ever mentioned that the film is going to change the plight of women in the country. And the film shows the journey of both the Durgas. The goddess who is worshipped and celebrated and a human sharing the same name who is seen as flesh for consumption. It's very symbolic and for people to understand the symbolism, it needs be seen and for that reason, films like these should not be banned or taken put of competition just like that.

she can be named Durga ...but tell me why was it so essential to name that character Durga...and then also add the word sexy before that name... I believe it was just to sensationalize the title because otherwise I find no use of the word sexy along with a name of hindu goddess...even if the character was named as Durga in that film. what symbolism does the word sexy add to the name Durga...

@bold - Durga & kali are two different forces... Kali the untamed one...and durga the one who has full control of her energy... but neither of the two powers has any symbolic linkages to sex or sexiness... the film-maker was just trying to garner some cheap publicity for a movie which no-one would have otherwise bothered about.

Discussions aimed at certain religions are not allowed as they instigate fights. Religion is a very sensitive matter and should not be used as a factor to attack others.
