Sonu Nigam has always ruled hearts with his magical voice which is perfect for singing songs that make all our hearts flutter, but that does not mean the singer shies away from commenting on serious issues that are the basis of national debates in the country.
He also never holds back from expressing his uncensored views, no matter how unpopular they might be. Remember the time he spoke up about the forced religiousness in the country after being woken up by azaan' in the morning? Also how he did not hesitate to shave his head himself after a maulvi declared a reward of Rs 10 lakh to anyone who shaves Sonu's head?
He does not budge even after he's targeted by trolls for voicing his stance on sensitive matters like religion and he is at it again!
Sonu Nigam recently spoke up about the raging debate on the national anthem playing in movie theatres. As reported by Indian Express, Sonu had quite a few arguments to put forward in the debate. He said,
"NATIONAL ANTHEM IS SOMETHING THAT'S PRESTIGIOUS AND SENSITIVE. WHY DO YOU WANT TO BELITTLE IT BY PLAYING IT IN THEATRES?

"IF I RESPECT MY NATIONAL ANTHEM, WHY WILL I PLAY IT IN A PLACE WHERE PEOPLE HAVE COME TO ENJOY A MOVIE AND THEY FIND IT PAINSTAKING TO STAND UP FOR IT? SO, ACCORDING TO ME, NATIONAL ANTHEM SHOULD NOT BE PLAYED IN CINEMA HALLS.
However, this time also he left no room for his words to be misconstrued by people who jump to attack others for their opinions at the slightest provocation, and justified that his stance did not mean he disrespected the national anthem.

He further added,
"BUT I ALSO THINK THAT IF IT IS PLAYED, THEN I WILL STAND UP. IT IS NOT ONLY MY NATIONAL ANTHEM, BUT I WILL STAND UP FOR NATIONAL ANTHEM OF OTHER COUNTRIES. LIKE IF PAKISTANI'S NATIONAL ANTHEM IS BEING PLAYED, I WILL STAND UP FOR IT. THAT'S MY WAY OF SHOWING RESPECT FOR THAT COUNTRY AND ITS PEOPLE. IF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM IS BEING PLAYED, WHY CAN'T WE STAND? WHAT'S THIS ARROGANCE?
The debate over the national anthem was sparked after a Supreme Court judge Justice D.Y. Chandrachud refuted the mandate saying that a cinema hall is a place of entertainment and there is no need for a citizen to war his patriotism on his sleeve.
It is yet to be seen how Sonu Nigam's statement will be received by people who are quite invested in the national debate.
