Abuse is abuse. Period.
Just because a person "loves" you and shows his anger by abusing you mentally /physically /sexually, then it is not passion, but an indication that this person can go way beyond this in future and harm you even more.
Shouting on you just because you smiled at a male friend or went for coffee with them, and then coming to you with that sorry face saying i am protecting you or i am possessive about you, then it is not cute or something go go 'aww' about, it is a dangerous sign.

I read this theory on dimestic abuse cycle and it totally makes a valid point

You don't torture the love of your life mentally or physically in the name of passion. If you truly love someone let alone physical abuse, you'd not even have that thought to hurt him/her.
