he was a great actor, did character roles too so not really a superstar but a star nonetheless.
so he died because of his belief that he will die + alcohol, overweight.

so jariwala is his nephew, his brother's son?

He was a pretty big star. People are painting him out to be like he was some character artiste. Sure he was no Bachchan or Dharmendra but he was no Irrfan Khan either( a brilliant actor btw). More like in the Ajay Devgan range. Some consider him to be the finest actor in Bollywood history. Watch him in the cult classic 'Naya Din Nayi Raat' where he played 9 different roles, the commercially brilliant 'Angoor' or the heart wrenching 'Koshish'.

@Bold1 - Agree. He was really a very famous star. Maybe in the same league of Vinod Khanna etc.

@Bold2 - Yes. I'm also one of them and he's. I do consider him as the true GOAT of Indian Cinema alongwith Kamaal Hasan.

Koshish is my most favorite film of his and his finest portrayal of his entire career. What a film & What a performance. :)

I think Dilip Kumar was considered the first superstar...and he was from the black&white era

he was and is the greatest actor but he was referred as 'Tragedy King'..the term first superstar/original superstar was coined for Rajesh Khanna probably after his 15 consecutive solo BB movies..before that it was romance star, jubilee star, tragedy king..

Sanjeev Kumar was definitely not a character actor 😆

Apart from multistarrers later in his career, he had a lot of solo hero hits when he was younger, like Manchali with Leena C, Anamika with Jaya, Khilona, etc and of course the critically acclaimed Koshish, Dastak, and so on

Sanjeev Kumar and Rajesh Khanna started out with their career around the same time in the mid 60s but RK went on to become the 1st superstar thanks to his BO successes, while Sanjeev Kumar became the art house favorite, the hero of smaller films.
Amitabh B came later and took over RK's crown

Sanjeev Kumar was never the SuperStar but he is easily one of the BW greatest actor.

He was such an effortless actor. and versatile actor.

From Aandhi to Angoor to Pati Patni aur woh to Koshish...i mean who has so much range in acting... He died too early. Very talented and naturally gifted actor.
