I always use this example but remember RDB? There was a scene where Siddharth's character opens his drawers and there's a picture of a woman there. It's never explained who she was, most likely his mother...maybe someone he loved?? It's up to us to interpret. We also get hints that he actually liked Soha's character himself. Again, never openly shown but many people took that interpretation.

With Harry, you had the flashes, the reminiscing of 'home' especially when he's with Sejal so he's lonely. We get that. With Sejal, she starts crying after she's molested in the club and she breaks down saying 'Rupen would blame me, he thinks I can't do anything right' - so she was constantly reminded of her flaws. She was constantly looking for that approval which MANY GIRLS in today's time unfortunately need especially from a lover.


I agree with all that you have written. I guess it's hard for the writers to draw a line and say 'This is enough!'.. They do the best they can and then let people call the story shallow or make an effort in the direction of understanding them.
As far as RDB is concerned, I remember having read about how Siddharth's character was in love with that of Soha'. I couldn't pick it up after the first watch. But it did make a li'l sense when I watched the movie again.

I think to the aam janta in India, unfortunately you do have to spell out things clearly. They don't get layers, I know I'm stereotyping but the state of Indian tv is proof of that.

I loved that subtle angle they showed in RDB, beautifully done.

@red, There are certain movies that you get right after the first watch. And then there are movies that only get better with each watch. And I like the second type! The ones that have something better to offer with each watch! And for me that's when a film maker really wins!



@Bold For me, it is the job of the author or a script writer to convey a character in such a way that it grabs the reader or viewer the first time. The best ones do. Like Shakespeare or Jane Austen down to J K Rowling. But good writing is not even necessary in some cases, Stephanie Meyer of Twilight and that 50 shades of grey author did not write great books, but their characters and/or content connected with an audience the first time. They did something right even if the writing is atrocious If a large portion of the audience does not understand then it is the fault of the author or film maker IMO. It's one vs many. So it is the failure of the one to communicate unless the majority of the audience is dumb which is highly impossible.

@Red I need to be engaged the first time. Then I will write essays analyzing the characters and even defending them 😳 . But if I fail to engage the first time, nothing will sell it to me.

An example to me of an excellent film that stands the test of time and has only two characters interacting most of the time is a Tamil film called 'Mouna Raagam'. It was written and directed by Manirathnam (of Bombay, Roja fame). He was at the top of his game then.
It's an 80s movie I think and it stars as the FL Revathy who played Alia's mom in two states. The characters are etched so well, it is relatable two decades and more later. An absolutely amazing movie. If the script works and the characters are well etched they are timeless and you do not need any distractions. You can watch two people on the screen for the majority of the time. Oh and excellent music helps.

ETA; The acting, characterization, reveal of the story is all subtle and happens in layers. Like peeling an onion.

Happy New year was bad. Dilwale was worse. Jab tak hai jaan was also trash. #JHMS was SRK's magic. It was his quintessential charm.

Watched it today, and I liked it! Not sure why the reactions are so negative!
Yes, the 2nd half dragged a bit, but overall the movie was a nice one time watch. I personally liked it more than Tamasha 😛
Oh and I'm obsessed with Raula!

Jab Harry Met Sejal Sunday (Day 3) Box Office Collections

Jab Harry Met Sejal Sunday (Day 3) Box Office Collections is 16 crore. JHMS 1st Sunday (3rd Day) Collection takes the First Weekend Business to 46.25 crore.

Jab Harry Met Sejal hasn't managed to score well on Sunday. The numbers in metros are decent to good but the Tier II multiplexes and single screens are below average to say the least. The film will have another decent day tomorrow courtesy partial holiday of Raksha Bandhan but post that, it should be a proper down-slide for the film much like Tubelight.

The film was scored superbly in Overseas markets and the Overseas Gross for the weekend is close to the Domestic All India Gross. Jab Harry Met Sejal is doing well in the Overseas markets where Shah Rukh Khan still manages to score bumper numbers irrespective of films. JHMS as a genre was anyway overseas friendly so the numbers were pretty much expected. The Overseas weekend is what the film should have score anyway but the Domestic Weekend is at least 35-40 % lower than what it should have been to have some chance at the box office.

It is now safe to say that Jab Harry Met Sejal stands no chance at succeeding at the box office. The fight is now all about getting to a face saving total. The biggest question right now is whether JHMS will come close to FAN's lifetime numbers or not. The weekend is looking at 46 crore range which will be the weakest performer for Shah Rukh Khan in the last 6 years or so.
