Also, music has definitely gone down the drain (everywhere not just in Bollywood). I think that could be another factor making movies seem dull cuz Bollywood movies are musicals. Those big family dance numbers are scarce now. And the ones we get all suck, lol.

People have become more pragmatic ,I guess. Previously magazines/ newspaper would be the only source to get know about the movie. Now we are literally flooded with articles. So the mystery and novelty is missing. There is no thrill anymore.Though the content has really improved.

Yeah that is what I used to think about 90s films too so I decided to rewatch them. They all make me cringe now. They were terrible, terrible films with a handful of exceptions. The music was nicer in my opinion but not the films.
The reason the films seem dull now is because most filmmakers, audience, critics try to make more intelligent films. It is more than just entertainment now. Even the dumbest, commercial directors try to make their characters realistic and complex. They are not going for fun. They want to tap into something deeper. They want to make you uncomfortable. It doesn't mean they are succeeding but they are trying.

I was thinking that too. There is no mystery about celebs anymore or their films. We get to know everything early on in this day and age and know nearly so much about celebs, it doesn't make me want to flock to the cinema halls.

I think many actors and actresses lack charm and real emotion. Most of the time I am just watching that actor or actress, not their character. If that even makes sense?

Also...yes, 90's films looking back now are so cringe-worthy. But something charming in them despite their OTT messages, dancing, acting, songs.

Cynicism, Ennui, Attention Deficiency disorder, Negativity and End of Innocence

People have become cynics nowadays, innocent appreciation for films, pure enjoyment for the sake of enjoying, that feeling is gone

ADD,,,,attention deficient people currently have too many distractions to concentrate on a movie and enjoy it, Ive seen people checking their cell phones in the theater, texting, chatting...to watch a movie thoroughly u need to really watch it fully, not half heartedly
Previously people used to even watch 3 hr long movies with dozens of songs and long dialogues and scenes...now they get bored and cannot sit still even for 2 hr long movies

Negativity- even before a film releases, there are discussions abt whether its going to be a flop, what can be bad abt it, trailer is bad etc. People dont give it a chance to release, or go watch it
Half the people dont even watch those movies, just revel in its flop status, enjoy pulling down the stars of that movie as if they are solely responsible for its failure and not the director/ screenplay writers.

People shd go and watch movies with an open mind, try to follow it without thinking abt their Insta or FB status or Whatsapp...concentrate on the movie, on the story, give it a chance and they may end up enjoying movies once more

90's movies were terrible, bad acting, bad editing, terrible styling, and ridiculous choreography... as others have stated, music was good though.

I agree with people who say that Hindi movies have improved dramatically in terms of content, but the problem with that is films these days tend to be too preachy to get a certain message across. I wish we could get films that have the best of both worlds with the quintessential Bollywood larger than life dance numbers as well as delivering an underlying social message without being excessively preachy!

That's what is making films feel so dull these days, imo

Music has gone down everywhere, true...

I so used to look forward to weekend top 20 in VH1, then songs became mundane and even repulsive, stopped watching it, later found out they no longer show top 20

I think songs and movie qualities in HW has gone down and since the source has dried up, the inspirations also withered. So BW is not able to be inspired now like they used to 😉

But Content has improved because BW and the country is more accepting and modernized than ever before
