Alia is a good actress. But she does not stand out in a crowd. There is a scene in BNKD. All air hostess cheering "Welcome to Singapore" (or some such thing). It is quite difficult to spot Alia there. It is different with Deepika.

Both Deepika and Alia are good actresses, (who would be termed as great actresses after few decades 😆 ).

If Deepika can be compared to Rekha, Alia can be compared with Jaya Bacchan (nothing to do with their personal life). Jaya Bacchan is a great actress, but she could not have done Umrao Jaan.

I don't think she can pull off Mastani looks-wise...neither did DP. Mastani was a full-bodied woman, I have always thought Sonakshi could have fit in to the character more.

The role is so mehh anyway...so who cares.😆

I know looks are subjective...but I didn't find Jaya plain-looking at all in her youth (unlike Alia).

Here's a pic:

She had a pleasing face overall, IMO. Big beautiful doe eyes with a nice shaped nose & oval shaped face with a prominent jawline. And she didn't use as much makeup as Rekha to enhance her features & was more of a 'natural' beauty. She was only disadvantaged in the height department.😆

And the character Umrao Jaan required an actress with a lot of sex appeal, not necessarily conventional beauty (IMO). Which Rekha had (and Jaya didn't). Jaya is similar to her DIL in at least one way, both never had any sex appeal.😆

I might add that I am heavily biased in favour of Bong beauties over others...😛
