I first watched Khamoshi on VHS, when I was really young... and I knew it was something special. The pain of seeing Nana Patekar go from door to door trying to sell soap/detergents, from seeing Helen's zest for life, to the shock of Manisha's brother falling from the roof, to Nana and Seema Biswas's disapproval of Salman to Manisha's accident re-uniting the family... it all just felt so emotional and that's what SLB does best. He makes you feel the movie and that's where he differs from other filmmakers. Essentially Sanjay Bhansali is emotions mixed with drama personified. As a result, he is either hit or miss with his movies.
Apart from Khamoshi, I liked HDDCS the most, thought Devdas went OTT, liked Black a lot because of how he directed Mr Bachchan and Rani, thought Saawariya was a failed experiment, haven't watched Guzaarish. Out of recent work, I think Ram Leela was ok... HDDCS environment + Romeo and Juliet. Bajirao was interesting in parts, but PC (probably her best performance in her Hindi career for me) and Ranveer excelled, but it is not SLB's best work. Looking forward to Padmavati as I like DP and Shahid and hope to see the film do well. 👍🏼
