He concentrates too much on the decor and costumes etc and not his characters. I can never connect to any of them. Superficial and shallow IMO

There was so much hype that "Black" would be sent for Oscars that year

Then it was discovered it was unqualified bcz this was remake of The Helen Keller story

Has anyone here seen "The Miracle Worker (1962)" based on the true story of Helen Keller

I tried once years ago but couldn't bcz it was so powerful and gut wrenching, I might try again 😊

His films are mostly boring, shallow & pretentious. I've only liked Khamoshi & Black from all the films that he has made till date. HDDCS was tolerable but not great.

Common thread b/w Khamoshi & Black is that they both had decent screenplays. Although Black was inspired from another film, I think.

Im not an expert in any way but if these pretentious film-makers focussed more on script over other superficial nonsense, they will do better.

I think I'm the only one here who loves SLB films..😆Except Khamoshi and Guzarish I have watched his every film in theatre and there are certain elements in his films which connects to me specially the performances, the songs, the opulence and grandeur.. I think they are top notch in most of his films except Devdas. There are flaws in his films and they are not masterpieces but they are interesting enough for me to get glued to the screen. And I think SLB has toned down a lot (in BM) compared to RL and Devdas..Mostly used subdued colors in every scene..The acting were not over the top like Devdas..

Think he's one of kind and always worth watching in theater. Even when he is an overindulgent mess (Guzaarish).

His movies are never what he claims them to be (idk who can watch Bajirao Mastani and think it's an epic love story about two people destined to be together, it's more about the psychological ruination of a man bound by too many conflicting responsibilities), but there's always some sort of cinema worthy spectacle. His films never connect with me emotionally and his characters are never rational but his work is always engaging- never boring or unworthy of unpacking. Formal, theatrical films aren't lacking in craft & he's actually worthy of the genius tag IMO.

Plus no one stages a dance number like him.

I first watched Khamoshi on VHS, when I was really young... and I knew it was something special. The pain of seeing Nana Patekar go from door to door trying to sell soap/detergents, from seeing Helen's zest for life, to the shock of Manisha's brother falling from the roof, to Nana and Seema Biswas's disapproval of Salman to Manisha's accident re-uniting the family... it all just felt so emotional and that's what SLB does best. He makes you feel the movie and that's where he differs from other filmmakers. Essentially Sanjay Bhansali is emotions mixed with drama personified. As a result, he is either hit or miss with his movies.
Apart from Khamoshi, I liked HDDCS the most, thought Devdas went OTT, liked Black a lot because of how he directed Mr Bachchan and Rani, thought Saawariya was a failed experiment, haven't watched Guzaarish. Out of recent work, I think Ram Leela was ok... HDDCS environment + Romeo and Juliet. Bajirao was interesting in parts, but PC (probably her best performance in her Hindi career for me) and Ranveer excelled, but it is not SLB's best work. Looking forward to Padmavati as I like DP and Shahid and hope to see the film do well. 👍🏼

HDDCS was great in first half. The performances were good and the chemistry between Salman Aishwarya was the best thing. Songs were really good too. But I just don't agree with the second half and the ending of the movie.
Hence its not my favorite movie.

I never got the hype of DEVDAS. Black, Khamoshi were really good. RL again was a disappointment but BM was definitely better than RL.

Namecalling others for the types of films they like. Classy behavior as always. But you won't see a moral lecture here 😆😆

I have always wondered about this classic Madonna song (La Isla Bonita). It's iconic and SLB copied it in Guzaarish. It is shameful that he used...
