Raees 1st Day Box Office Collection: The first big release of the year, Shahrukh Khan's Raees hit the screens today. The film had excellent buzz and hype before the release despite so many delays. There was also a clash with Hrithik Roshan starrer Kaabil. Well, it seems that the SRK starrer has got an extraordinary opening at the box office. Check out Raees collection report for the opening day.

Raees 1st Day Box Office Collection

As per the trade estimates, Raees 1st day box office collection will be in the range of 21.50 crores. The film has fared very well in the late night shows.

Raees started the day with a bang. The overall occupancy in the morning shows was 60%. All the major circuits Mumbai, Gujarat, Rajasthan opened very well. It set the box office on fire in West Bengal where it opened to 75-80% occupancy. The film showed growth in the noon shows as the occupancy went up to 65-70%. The real magic started to begin in the evening when the holiday advantage came into the picture. It has given a huge boost to Raees collection.

At many places, Raees is recording housefull shows in the evening and night. Not only single screens but even multiplexes are showing huge turnaround despite the fact that the film is massy. It is due to Shahrukh Khan who is still among the top 3 biggest crowd pullers at the Indian box office. The actor was coming after one underperformer Dilwale and one flop Fan. Yet the opening is one of the highest of all time.

Raees is average in East Punjab which is probably due to the genre as the film is Gujarat-based. Delhi/UP is decent but could have been better. Raees has outside chances to set an all-time opening day record in West Bengal which would be an unbelievable achievement. In terms of occupancy, Raees opening is the best since Salman Khan starrer Sultan. It is better than Christmas release Dangal and even better than Sultan at some places. This is an incredible achievement considering that Sultan was a partial holiday release whereas Raees is facing a clash with Hrithik Roshan starrer Kaabil.

A lot has also been said about the box office clash between Raees and Kaabil. But it has turned out to be one-sided clash as far the opening day is concerned. Raees 1st day collection will be double than Kaabil opening day. Last year Hrithik Roshan's Mohenjo Daro clashed with Akshay Kumar's Rustom. Despite the negativity, Mohenjo Daro opened to around 9 crore and there was 5 crore difference between the opening. This says a lot about the stardom and clearly shows that the three Khans stand way ahead of rest of the actors.

Raees 1st day collection will be the 3rd highest for any Shahrukh Khan starrer. His best are Happy New Year and Chennai Express. The opening day has crossed Dilwale and Fan. Raees box office collection on day 1 will also be the second highest ever in January and also has chances to beat Hrithik Roshan starrer Agneepath. Though the highest single day record for January is out of reach. Dangal released last year collected a whopping 32 crore on 1st January.

The advance booking for tomorrow is very high as it is a National holiday. Raees collection will definitely show growth but it will be interesting to note the gap between both new releases. As Kaabil is also expected to show big gains tomorrow.

Raees 1st Day Collection: 21.50 Crore

Kaabil vs Raees Collections on Wednesday: Early Estimate

The much-awaited box office clash between Raees and Kaabil turned out to be a damn squib, as Shah Rukh Khan reigned supreme, decimating the Hrithik Roshan starrer on Day 1. As per early estimates, Kaabil has collected 8.5 - 8.75 crore on Wednesday, while Raees has collected 20 crore plus. The collections of Raees at almost every theatre that we tracked was 2 to 3 times more than Kaabil.

Like we mentioned in our report, which was published in the evening (Read), the morning shows of Kaabil had occupancy ranging from 10-20% at multiplexes. Raees on the other hand was running at 65% plus at several centres for the early morning shows.

Mid-way through the day, it became quite clear that Kaabil would fall short of the 10 crore mark, but there was hope that it would get to double digits because of positive reports. The growth was there in the evening, but not enough to cross the 10 crore mark - which would still be a low but decent total.

With such a poor start, the film now relies almost entirely on word-of-mouth to recover costs. It needs to show growth in the range of 75%-100% (i.e Thursday collections in the 15 crore range) to have any chance of putting up a healthy total.

If the growth doesn't come tomorrow, the writing will be on the wall for Kaabil. It would be a tragedy if a film like Kaabil under-performs just because the Roshans decided not to avert the clash and unfortunately for Hrithik, it would be for the second time in a row he's failing in a clash.

As for Raees, it's Shah Rukh Khan all the way through. He is without doubt one of the Top 2 crowd pullers in the country and his consistency for last two decades has been phenomenal. This decade hasn't been very good for him as far as quality films is concerned, but even after two back-to-back under performers, his fan-following is stronger than ever.

The bigger challenge for him would be to do something that he hasn't done in recent times. While all his films have opened very well, most haven't sustained in the long run. It's important for Raees to sustain and put up a total of 150 crore plus at the domestic box office.

The clash has been settled, SRK has comprehensively won it. It's now going to be about the trend and where the two films go from here.

Can Kaabil close the big gap on Thursday and bring it down to more reasonable levels? Or will Raees be a runaway hit at the box office? These questions will be answered in the next couple of days, with the hold on Friday becoming very important for both films. Kaabil to stay afloat and Raees to become a big grosser.

Stay tuned to our coverage of Raees and Kaabil. Much more in the morning.

Harking back to the days of the anti-hero of the pre-Shah Rukh Khan era, Raees is a gangster saga with a contemporary spin. It takes recourse to subtle sleights of new-age style to compensate for what it lacks in terms of thematic essence and narrative pace. It makes a fair fist of the palpably onerous task. Shah Rukh shrugs off his defining starry mannerisms, embraces physical attributes and accessories designed to convey an air of to-hell-with-the-world insouciance, and becomes an effective anchor for a film that hinges overly on his box office clout to carry it across the finishing line. Raees has passages that might feel a touch ponderous to those seeking tauter twists and turns, but overall the plot rings true all the way through.

A drama about a resolute IPS officer (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) on the trail of a wily 1980s Gujarat crime lord (Shah Rukh Khan) who rises from the ranks and defies the constraints clamped by the Prohibition Act to become the state's undisputed liquor king, Raees captures the period and spatial details with diligence and dexterity.

Add to that the fascinating duet struck up by Shah Rukh and Nawazuddin, both tempering their individual acting styles to seek a meeting ground, Raees becomes a treat to watch even when the film isn't exactly throbbing with energy.

Expectedly, the principal premise of the film is morally dodgy, what with the protagonist being a defiant law-breaker who willfully erases the line between right and wrong and swears by the primacy of his shady business.

A criminal with a heart of gold - that is a stock figure of gangland yarns. Here, too, Raees that protagonist, to keep his dhanda going, acquires a larger-than-life dimension as he navigates a minefield infested by self-serving politicians, perfidious mobsters and one cop who vows to demolish his illicit empire come what may.

Raees Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan in a still from the film

No calling is small, and no religion is bigger than your calling, young Raees' ammi (Sheeba Chadda) drills into his head.

As he attains adulthood, he reinvents that adage and declares "main dhanda karta hoon, dharm ka dhanda nahi karta," thereby separating the trade he plies from the faith he professes.

In doing so, he emerges as a trustworthy do-gooder, a doting family man - Raees woos and marries Aasiya (Mahira Khan) and fathers a son - and a loyal friend - he stands by childhood buddy Sadiq (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub) till the very end.

Raees Movie Review: Mahira Khan in a still from the film

And when the situation demands, Raees turns into an invincible action hero who has a measure of all his adversaries and possesses the wherewithal to spell doom for them.

At the other end of the spectrum is ACP Jaideep Ambalal Majmudar, an upright cop whose fight isn't only against Raees and his associates, but also the higher-ups in the police force who subject him to repeated transfers.

But no matter where the policeman ends up - be it Raees' own turf Fatehpur, Kutch or the police control room - he finds one way or another of being thorn in the side of his foe.

The screenplay plays off the rules that govern the world of smuggled foreign liquor against the dour principles that ACP Majmudar plays by. The latter sticks to endless glasses of tea.

The first time he summons Raees to the police station, he offers the bootlegger half a glass of tea and advises him to get accustomed to thaane ki chai.

But scotch is scotch and tea is tea and never the twain do meet in this battle of attrition that takes a toll on both men.

For Parzania and Lamhaa director Rahul Dholakia, Raees might be markedly unfamiliar territory, but he doesn't let that fact undermine the content and its context. The balance that he achieves lends the film sustained solidity.

Watch the trailer of Raees:

Dholakia keeps the action largely rooted in the chosen milieu while making way for ingredients aimed at upping the dramatic pitch.

There are moments where the overlong film seems to make rough weather of combining two creative impulses - the big and the bold on one hand and the restrained and the rugged on the other - but the principal actors make Raees rather easy to watch.

SRK is on top of his game here, recalling his Chak De! India performance in the process. With an effortless actor like Nawazuddin Siddiqui snapping at his heels, the lead actor is always on his toes.

Raees Movie Review: Shah Rukh Khan in a still from the film

The modulations that SRK brings to the act are impressive not only on the level of craft but also in relation to the layers they add to the conflicted character.

Nawazuddin, in the middle of a red-hot streak, operates in a totally different zone. He digs his teeth deep into his meaty role with customary elan and delivers a dazzling performance.

Mahira Khan doesn't have quite that much to do in this construct. Her character is serenaded by the hero; she, in turn, occasionally appeals to the latter's good senses and sheds a tear or two when she doesn't have her way. There isn't much purchase in this limited bandwidth.

Eventually, this is a man's world and Raees is about SRK and Nawazuddin. Despite the concessions it makes to commercial demands, or probably because of them, the film is none the worse for it.
