Fan is not niche, I don't know here this is coming from. Just from the fact that it had no songs?
It had a budget of 110 crores, had nonsensical (as found in your average masala movie) action sequences, over the top cheesy dialogue and a typical Shahrukh performance where the character and the story take the back seat and the he becomes the focus. The whole movie is littered with this junk, especially the the third act.
The movie goes nowhere. Its neither dark nor intelligent. I would say its comical in places. Even though the film is based on this conflict between two people, it is almost like there isn't one at all. The plot never gets interesting. The said characters have no depth, their dialogue is woeful and the over the top, phoned dual performance makes it worse. The direction and the editing are poor as well, in particular, once the second half starts. It loses any sense of direction, of coherence it had from thereon.
It is along with Mohenjodaro (saw it yesterday, just to see how bad it really is), the worst movie I have seen all year. And ironically both feature really poor returns from its leading actors.
Dangal is a very well made movie with a story to tell(and it does bar a few missteps), has great characters and boasts of terrific performances across the board. That is why it works.
