Dangal' worldwide box-office collection: Aamir Khan film zooms past 300-crore mark

Aamir Khan's Christmas release 'Dangal,' which also stars Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra and Sakshi Tanwar in lead roles, is roaring at the box-office with the collection of over Rs 197 crore at the domestic box-office. The sports drama film, co-written and directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has also made a mark in the overseas market having collected Rs 111.61 crore, which takes its worldwide collection (domestic+overseas) to an astounding figure of over Rs 308 crore. 'Dangal,' which is a biopic on Indian coach and wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, has done a stupendous business in international circuits like USA-Canada, UAE-GCC, UK and Australia. With no major Bollywood release to compete with in the second weekend, the film's collections are expected to go up substantially.

Saw the movie yesterday in US. I would rate it at 4/5 but IMHO I think Chak De has a much better climax in the end when compared to Dangal. I liked everything in Dangal - Aamir, Sakshi, The young girls and the older girls but I so wish they didn't make the Indian coach that bad. Like they made a caricature of the Indian coach to glorify Mahavir Singh Phogat and the whole Mahavir getting locked in the room for the final bout - That was really unnecessary. You are telling a real story then why do you need to dramatise the final scene. In that sense I would rate the Chak De Climax better than the Dangal one

But rest of the things were absolute spot on - I never knew why or how the marks are awarded for wrestling bouts and now I understand them thanks to this movie. I liked the Dangal scenes as well as the wrestling match scenes in the second half and the Dangal title song was really spot on - The song really sets the tempo for the movie to match up to.

I saw this movie in the afternoon show in US - The theatre was half full only but everyone totally enjoyed the movie. Good job Aamir - Mahavir Singh's story ought to be told because of his achievements and also because he has put a strong case for female empowerment right in the heart of Harayana.

Saw the movie yesterday! One of the best movie I have seen till date - at par with Lagaan (though Lagaan still has a slight edge due to nostalgia😳).

The Movie:

Dangal made me smile, Dangal made me laugh, Dangal made me cry, Dangal made me root for the Geeta & Babita, Dangal made me try and talk to Geeta trying to tell her what her next move should be, Dangal made me want to hug Mahavir Phogat... Most of all it made me my miss my dad😭(messaged him as soon as the movie ended) and my country(listened to Vande Matram as soon as I reached home😊)

IMO, Biggest USP of Dangal is the way they explored father-daughter relationship.. Not many movies attempt this and Dangal did it beautifully. 😊

A big plus, The creatives did not try to glorify Mahavir Phogat's and his daughter's characters.. He is a proud man with his flaws and so are his daughters.. This story is about them accepting their prejudices and flawed thinking and then working on overcoming them. 👏 They allowed the characters to breathe.. let them speak.. let them live.. let them evolve..

Also, A shout out to Omkar - Geeta & Babita's brother. He made me love the first half soo much!! 😊

I think I can keep writing about this film.. but I'll stop for now 😊

The only teeny-tiny criticism - I wish that their coach had some grey shades instead of being completely dark.. The end was dramatic(as is the case with all sport movies😆), but I had fun even watching the dramatic helplessness😆..

The cast:

The casting is brilliant 👏

The best thing about Aamir Khan is that he is and has always been the character - The actor never overpowers the character... His dedication.. 👏👏

Saakshi Tanwar.. Her eyes.. Damn her eyes!! She can express everything through those eyes!!

The Young Geeta is incredible.. 👏👏 My favorite.. 😊 She is spunky... She is smart.. She is ambitious.. When she cried she broke my heart.. 😭

Young Babita, older Geeta and older Babita everyone played their part perfectly and the whole cast deserves a standing ovation.. 👏👏

The music:

Pritam - You have surprised me again 😊.. The songs fits the movie and the situations to the 'T'👏

The direction

Nitesh kept it simple and let the story move at it's own pace.. Did not force anything.. Perfecto!! 👏

The AMAZING people behind the camera

I don't know what are the different departments that come together to make a movie.. But All of you guys were brilliant!! The sets, the lighting, the costumes, etc etc... 👏👏

FINALLLY "DANGAL IS DHAAKAD"

I'm ready to watch this movie again 😊 And yes I went back home and watched the actual wrestling matches and they are amazing as well!! 😊

Dangal (Hindi) grossed a huge 18 crore apprx on day eight smashing all records for day eight by a distance. The business in North India has gone to another level on day eight with collections in Delhi /UP being better than Thursday at 4 crore nett while East Punjab was similar to Thursday with 2.40 crore nett. other areas saw drops in the 10-15% region which is still excellent. The film is tax free in UP and Haryana which is helping the Nett collections in both these states. Saturday in New Year's Eve and the growth can be huge but on the other hand the film is already at a very high level which could curtail growth. If the 30% plus growth comes then the film will be on course for a historic 100 crore nett second week which has never happened before. Dangal has crossed the 210 crore nett mark in eight days. The daily business of Dangal (Hindi) till date is as follows.

Dangal created an All Time Record with the highest second Friday collections of all time. This follows the highest single day of all time on Sunday as it crossed 40 crore nett and the highest weekday business ever with 88 crore nett. This record looks much stronger as it has beaten by a distance as the previous record was 14.50 crore nett. It is the first film to cross 15 crore nett at the start of the second week and also makes it five films going over 10 crore nett till date. Last year Bajirao Mastani had grossed 12 crore nett on its second Friday but it was a holiday for Christmas. It also must be noted that Christmas releases dominate the second Friday numbers with 5 out of the top six being Christmas releases and Bajrangi Bhaijaan the only non Christmas release among the top six.
