You can have a private jet, but if you don't have someone to whom you can reveal the real you and share your personality with, the feeling of loneliness in a first world country will be no easier to bear and learn to overcome than in a third world country. The movie is about universal emotions of heartbreak and companionship...that it is set in the lives of the rich and young is just a plot contrivance, not the core of the story.

You're right that the emotions are universal but it's just that I couldn't believe this epic bond that they were supposed to have. Ok great, they like partying and fooling around and Bollywood... so? I think this is one of those things that will work for some and just won't for others. If you don't buy the love story, the movie won't work for you. That's why I hated the melodramatic last twist even more because it was like "SEE, she has cancer and he still likes her!!" to ham-handedly prove that their relationship is indeed significant.

I also didn't buy how their platonic love is all-powerful and more important than romantic love -which is the vibe Karan Johar seemed to be playing with at the end. Maybe it's because of his own background (being gay and without a spouse - a lifestyle where by default friends end up taking a more impactful role in his life) but in reality for most people, friendships are always superseded by romantic life. It was just too pat to have her dying and him being the one to sort of grow old with her because it prevented the actual problems that would have occurred if she lived. Imagine she wasn't sick - after Ali, she would have eventually found another husband, had kids, moved on, where her platonic friend would be less and less important especially if there was a direct clash between both.

Personally, I think unrequited love and friendship was done way, way better in Ek Main Aur Ek Tu.

@bold: Totally understandable.

Oh, the cancer twist wasn't really to show that he'd still love her with her bald head or as she's dying or something 😆 It was to bring them together again, so that Ayan would go seek her out after his self-imposed 'end' to their relationship, when he tells her to help him stay away by not contacting/meeting him again. The plot needed a reason for him to reach out to her again (for closure to his feelings) and him finding out about her separation with Ali and then her illness prompts their togetherness once again...during which she's finally able to communicate to him why exactly their relationship can't be what he wants and he has his moment of understanding. And even if Alizeh didn't have cancer, she wasn't keen on having a long-lasting romantic relationship after the one with her husband and what she experienced via him...it just wasn't something that she seemed to find suitable for herself, what it did to her. Lots of people don't find their happily-ever-after in romantic love. I don't think he's saying this is the way it is for all or most people, but probably definitely his own life...he's channeled that into the story of these characters.

you can be best of friends but you can' t make your best friend love you, simple. she loved him as a friend not as a lover.
i seriously loved this friendship over other kjo friendship movies.. this was beautifully done.
cheers kjo!

Love and relationships cannot be forced. They happen. Just because someone is in love with you does not mean you are obliged to reciprocate the feeling.

since the time, i hv watched movie I am cursing writer 😆
He had such a beautiful n complex story with him but he made mess out of it
Ayan-Alizeh had a complex relationship and writer could have done better job-film could hv been high on emotions making people cry but it ended up making audience laugh

Its true that we cannot love back everyone who loves us...what bugs me is that Ali mai aisa kya tha jo alizeh couldn't move on...a little insight in Ali-Alizeh relationship or atleast some subtle hints thrown here n there would hv helped in understanding Alizeh's love for Ali and that in turn would hv helped in understanding why Alizeh cannot love ayan or why she can't atleast give him a chance

Alizeh saw him as her family, she had filial love for him and even jokingly called him her brother. Of course she would be repulsed if he made a move on her cause she saw their relationship as above and beyond physical love. Lust and the more baser form of love had been her tabahi, Ayan was her sukoon which she felt would remain intact only through platonic love.
There is no doubt that she loved Ayan the most, even more than DJ Ali, unfortunately it wasn't the kind of love Ayan desired.
