what makes my blood boil is when other countries show up to lecture us in a very demeaning manner especially when something happens... in person when people have done that... they say I look like I am going to beat the shit out of them... I don't go around lecturing others in a demeaning manner when things happen in their country and I expect the same...

I dislike it when some NRI's are constantly putting down india... it is obvious after they make their nth post demeaning the country no matter how much they claim to like india... they are constantly demeaning the country... i have learned over time to ignore such people ...spewing out negativity online is one thing and getting out and doing something about it is another... at the end of the day india-forums comments are useless.. if you feel passionately about something do something to change that in our country... instead of complaining about how bad our country is for the nth time...

I don't say Pakistan is a terrorist country and I will never say it because if someone wrote that about india I would feel very, very bad... I don't know Pakistan and I have never been to Pakistan...I don't know how the situation is there... But someone who lives in Pakistan is aware of the situation and they will be the ones who have to deal with it and face it... for us to say that is wrong and hurtful... regardless of the justification we come with it... that's a hurtful thing to say...

Haha love it. 😉

On topic, I sometimes feel bad and then fight about it. 😆But that's only when the opinion is tinged with condescension or plain inaccurate. For example, my friend who studied in London told me about how she was told a girl would never visit India 'cause of rape. Now, we are not denying there is a problem, but to stereotype all Indian men and look down on someone because of that is wrong. 'Cause hey, I could say I don't wanna visit the UK 'cause everyone there is a racist, but that would be a gross generalization.

When someone puts their point across politely, I either disagree or agree based on my views on the topic. I do not believe that the issues of a country/city should be swept under the carpet by its citizens. If you are a true patriot, you would rather want to solve a problem than hide it.

I don't feel bad. If they can express their feelings then I believe constructive criticism should be allowed because it is possible there is no right way and two people don't need to have the same opinion. And even if I don't agree with it I won't be the defender or feel the need to go out of my way and try to force their opinions. For example I tend to have very strong opinions on any said issue but I try not to be impartial and don't mind asking difficult questions and inconvenient questions. Your government should be accountable and transparent and approachable as a voter. We can only address some issue if you take notice of it. By looking past it and suppressing your thoughts is not going to change the situation. It only hurts if you make it a prestige issue.

So there's an episode of Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai where Indravadan talks about Sahil being a kid who peed on the bed uptil the age of 10 or the maid used to bathe with him and other stuff like that. He talks about all these things in a party and cracks jokes on it. Sahil gets annoyed as he feels humiliated and leaves.
Now this is exactly how I feel if somebody says something about my country or someone who is close to me. Now there might be several flaws with our country but RDB taught us > Koi Country perfect nahi hoti, usse perfect banana padta hai< Even though some of these things might be factually correct, I wouldn't like anybody talking about such things on a public platform where entertainment is the sole purpose. If it's an event where the purpose is a discussion regarding that particular topic or a debate then why not, keeping in mind that it doesn't end up being a joke.

At the same time, I feel most of the people who end up saying such things, say it in jest and do not mean to demean the country or the concerned party.

You know I have seen this happen too! I'm not generalizing but there are sometimes more NRIs than the citizens of the other countries who constantly putting down their own country. I have relatives living in London/ US who constantly compare their country to the one they are living in. India is developing, such a vast population with different cultures it is hard to become the best so easily. I understand second generation people not adjusting it to well here, but people who have lived here almost half their life they go there and cant adjust here I find that hard to believe. You do nothing to change it, constant critiquing doesn't help!

I also don't believe it generalizing a whole state as terrorist state just because some psychopants are coming from their country. It's like saying all men in India are sexual offenders when they are not, and should not be generalized for few people's mistakes.

I'm somebody very opionated too! And I usually am able to take the truth as it is, but sometimes you do feel upset or embarrassed when somebody goes on & on about your country. It's a reflex or human nature I would say, from your childhood you are made to say your country is great, and to stand still to the anthem - you develop that sense of possessiveness for your country and automatically feel angry when somebody badmouths it even if you know the thing the other person is saying is probably the truth! i do ask questions & criticize, but usually it would be in front of my countrymen. I don't think I would be able to raise these questions from my own will in front of other country people.
