I think the producers/distributors and all are banking too much on buzz nowadays. People just like and view things a lot online cause it's free at the end of the day. When it comes to paying for something, the Indian audience is a lot more choosy IMO.
Too much importance is being given to likes, trends, buzz and locations. All this is good but secondary. The content and the acting HAS to be good first! The rest of it is just icing on the cake.

People have already mentioned various points, but one reason that I saw being brought up on social media and also by a lady in the cinema was that Katrina looked too old for Sidharth. As I think I mentioned in the BBD reviews thread, someone actually said that Sid toh Kat ke adhe umar ka hoga. This is pretty sexist considering that we accept the actor being 20/25 years older.

Like you mentioned that bbd was a metro film that start low and grow in the evenings. The same was the case with films like katti batti , k & k, k & s. Only shaandaar was a similar content film that opened well bcoz of holiday.
Bbd also got - reviews on social media early in morning noon shows and plus that viral video where public bashed it outrageously. That way perhaps there wasn't sufficient growth in evenings.

I think it has to do with how it's targeted its audience. Had it promoted towards metropolitan audience, it would have fared better. Need to remind you, this is India that prefers brainless masala films while films like Piku doesn't even get the BO results.

I would say I am part of the multiplex audience. So amongst the people I know, Katrina has a reputation of not being a good actress. And Sid has a somewhat similar rep. When people found out about this movie, a lot of them were like LOL both can't act. This was the general reaction.

And they weren't going to go watch a movie just for a hit song which is available on YT anyway. I mean I don't know about the general perception, but I knew this song would be in the end credits.😆 I'm actually surprised people thought this would be a hit. At least 1 person from the lead pairing should be able to act!

Seconded. I'm part of the multiplex audience as well. Albeit not in India, but still.
There's nothing interesting enough to spark interest from the trailer. It looked like an amalgam of HW rehashed time travel rom-com flicks. Also, Sid-Katrina, despite how amazing they must be personally, are pathetic actors. A movie needs at least something to give it that spark opening. Phir WOM pe chaale toh dusri baat hai.

Cuz of the way it was promoted..the promotions wrre too focused on what a good looking couple they made.. Why would ppl go to theater to see Kat's abs when they can see it for free on YT? I said during the promotions as well..They did not focus on the concept of the mobie but indtead thought k the looks and chemistry willbring in the audience
I see the same problem with promotions of Befikre.. its only bejng promoted for kissed.. Why would ppl pay to watch kisses.. They can watch that and much more without paying on YT.. It remains to be seen whether they will change thier strategy but as of now, thats what they have been doing
They think by keeping the stiry under wraps, they are intriguing the audience but imo you need to reveal afew details to build expectations..

Very true about Befikre. The only thing there is that Ranveer is at least a better actor. He might be able to rise above the storyline and elevate the movie. That will give it good WOM.
In BBD, there was no hope for that 😆

Hype in forum rarely translates into real life... with this, it is also proved that song getting famous will not make a film hit..
like ADHM can be a flop even though millions watch the song in youtube
