So, I like Sidharth Malhotra and want to watch his movies. Does that make me a fan? 😆
Regardless of whether BBD does well, I have made some observations about him. Maybe it's too soon to make this post, but I'm not too good at delaying gratification.
I liked his understated performances in Kapoor&Sons and Hasee Toh Phasee, but critics seem unimpressed with him in BBD. I sense a bit of hesitation in some of his performances. Sid is a bit of a restrained performer and he needs to let go.
He seems comfortable when he is playing urbane, youth-centric roles because he probably identifies with these characters, but when it comes to characters that he lacks identification with, he draws a blank.
In BBD, the critics are complaining that he has not done well as an old man, and I can understand why. This is where his restraint doesn't serve him too well. Your body language has to change and you need to live and breathe that character.
Why did I say he needs to take a leaf out of Alia Bhatt's book? Because Alia is a shrewd performer who focuses on what she can do for a film rather than what a film does for her. When you focus on the former and not the latter, the film automatically serves a purpose for you.
She consistently focuses on roles that show off her depth and breadth as an actor. After all, the star comes after the actor. She is trying to make herself irreplaceable in the audience's memory bank with roles in Udta Punjab, Highway, Humpty Sharma, 2 States etc.
I would like to say to Sid that he needs to concentrate more on his own performance. Yes, the whole package is important, but a film isn't just a sum of its songs and good-looking actors. It needs a tight script and riveting performances to do well. After all, Salman, SRK and Aamir have built their reputations on the backs of good films and performances.
If Sid realises he has certain weaknesses, he should work on them. With BBD, I honestly felt it wasn't such a good choice because the script didn't seem great. Generic love story about commitment-phobe who realizes he is in love. YJHD anyone?
He should choose performance-oriented roles now that allow him to entrench himself in the industry.
His coming films-
Action-comedy with Jackie: Good opportunity to be rough and rugged and also show off comic timing. Hope he owns this role.
Aashiqui 3: Will be intense and he is paired against Alia, so he better bring it. Intense roles are a great way to make inroads into the audience's heart, a la Aditya Roy Kapur in Aashiqui 2.
Remake of Ittefaq- Fresh pair with Sonakshi. It's a mystery film, so another genre to experiment with.
Overall, I like his lineup and I hope he delivers.
Wrote an essay, I know, but what say?
Agree or disagree?
Is this whole post irrelevant? 😆
