Balaji shutting down it's film production wing is sad, but not too surprising tbh. They haven't done well in ages now.
BW, over the years, has lost its individuality, simplicity, charm, and lost sight of what made it work, perhaps in trying to compete with HW.
They have so many resources but the creativity is at all time low, and not just in terms of writing. Aaj kal toh, get a big star, give them 80cr, book holiday 3 years in advance, put in a Honey Singh or Baadshah song, aur picture ban gayi.
I'll cite Sairat here...that movie did so well, despite being a regional movie and having probably 1/10th the budget of a regular BW film. The treatment there is fantastic. The film is literally something old BW would have easily made -- deduction, there's still an audience for everything but BW is losing it's connect...or even look at how successful TWMR was. That movie, IMHO, defines old school BW for what it is...if somebody asked me to name a film that truly defines BW recently, I would use that one...story, music, acting, direction, great screenplay, drama, comedy, etc. I'm not saying BW
It doesn't help that stars all have big egos, assume they alone can make anything and everything work, they charge and are paid crazy amounts of money that simply can't be justified. Budgets seriously need to be slashed. Release sizes need to be controlled...why some movies are released everywhere when they won't work in some parts of India doesn't make any sense. ..and pay writers more, give them more credit, and some incentives to get creative and do good work.
