Disney shutting shop, now Balaji? The problem with Indian film producers is that they look at Mel Brooks' #TheProducers as a How To guide.

MUMBAI: The promoters of Balaji Telefilms are taking a more cautious and judicious look at their film production business Balaji Motion Pictures (BMP) following recent setbacks with Great Grand Masti and Kya Super Cool Hain Hum 3 and a legal tussle with the film certification board over Udta Punjab.

Many in the film industry said that Balaji Telefilms may decide to shut the film business, like Disney India.

While Sameer Nair, group chief executive officer of Balaji Telefilms, told ET there are no plans to shut operations, he agreed the company will rethink and take more prudent calls.

"Yes, we have suffered losses on Great Grand Masti and Kya Super Kool Hain Hum 3, but with Udta Punjab and Azhar we managed to recover costs. We do constant scrutiny of our business and we have four films under production," Nair said.

He, however, refused to say that the company is not going ahead with any new projects till next year. He said that going ahead, Balaji Telefilms' focus will be on its digital video-on-demand business, ALT Digital, which it plans to launch in 3-4 months.

"Films was never a scalable business as it is a very high-risk business. For us, television is and will continue to be our mainstay, which is a cash-generating business. Movies will contribute in spurts, while our focus will be to build ALT, for which we have raised money also," Nair said.

According to people in BMP as well as the film industry, the company is not green-lighting new projects. "There is pressure on the film business," a person in the company said. "It is a very high-risk business and BMP has lost big money on films in the past one-and-a-half years. The promoters are not happy and have decided to wait for the result of Half Girlfriend before signing any new project."

Based on writer Chetan Bhagat's novel, Half Girlfriend is under production and is slated to release in May 2017. "Whether we will continue to produce movies or not will be dependent on its response," the person added.

Balaji has nothing to lose if they shut shop in BW. Ekta's base has always been TV.
So every PH in BW is running in loses. Who will make films now? 😆

All A listers will turn producers and put their money in movies. Happy days of 50 cr fees and no responsibility are gone.
Hope Mafia doesn't enter movie business again, like 90

Except for salman films..hardly any block buster films are being made.

There is no entertainment without women..they are needed at least for window dressing.

Actresses are paid so poorly and given such a raw deal..none of the top actresses want to work in the big masala films.Even katrina wants good money and good roles..her presence would have greenlit many films.

The writers dont have interesting, intrinsically filmy scripts to write..where are the women?

The music directors are not inspired to make zingy film scores..as the themes are dull.

90 % of songs are sung by male singers.because the hero wants all the songs.

There has to be a balance.Half the population is female..(unlike sports, which have more male patronage)

A few years back there were so many interesting projects..

Now none with top heroines...and the industry is hurting

You made a case for better roles for women and yet defeated your own argument by saying only Salman films make money ie those films which do NOT have good roles for women.

Good for Balaji, now they can concentrate on continuing their neverending soaps on TV channels.
But definitely BW production houses are in dire straits, so many are leaving now.

Movies are failing right and left, even big productions are failing.

They get such a narrow window to make money, its ridiculous! 😲
A movie which takes so much time, money and labor to make, yet its fate is decided in mere 2 weeks, sometimes only in 1st week itself.
This is pathetic!
Because of online downloading, movies are suffering a lot.
Malicious trolling, bad reviews, negative buzz created for malicious purpose all these affect movies' collections and eventually most PH will shut shop.

As it is too many movies are being made nowadays, many with inflated budgets, and audience wants only one type of movies to succeed.
