This is what happens when corporates try to interfere with art. These hot shot professionals with an MBA in marketing and finance think they can treat the film industry as a case study, create a syntax, create formulae, and put it in loop: basically putting slapstick comedy, mindless action, illogical flow, item songs, love making scenes and expecting films to earn an x amount. Audiences are not fools. They may be tricked once or twice, but not forever.

Actors are seriously overpaid as many already pointed out. They should be paid a base x amount for their popularity/acting/work hours they put in, the remaining should be given based on how much the film makes, yes you heard it right, profit (or loss) sharing.

Also, I think these companies spend way too much money on promoting. You don't need 3 months of incessant promotions - just to earn that coveted number on day 1. That's madness! What's worse is, if there is a clash, it is always about who will promote more, not whose film is better. IMO these companies should make an agreement that promotions will only start 2-3 weeks before a film's release - they'd save at least 10-15 crores simply by doing such cost cutting measures.

As an MBA and marketing professional, I take umbrage that business and art cannot work in harmony. A sound business model or marketing strategy is not formulaic, nor does it take the customer for granted. It is customer oriented. It is attune with the needs, values and wants of the customer and serves it. Any product launch would have a set budget and would not mindlessly exceed it for the sake of competition. If they are failing, then they are bad marketers and business people.
The problem with many films is that it caters to the ego of the actor and/or director rather than the audience.

In the case of Balaji Films the problem is that they created a bubble of adult comedy and the horror/thriller. They saturated their own market and paid the price for it.

The other part was just bad luck. Udta Punjab is a good movie. It is unfortunate if it did not succeed.

The Flying Jatt was just a risky investment. Superheroes movies do not succeed in India. Mr. India is the only one that got the formula right. The problem is two fold. We have been conditioned to believe that brown people cannot be superheroes. The other part is that we do not take the superhero genre seriously and dilute it with unnecessary song/dance, comedy etc.
