Looks like both movies might flop😆

Mohenjo Daro Review

5 min read

Hrithik Roshan is known as one of the most hardworking actors in the industry. But he does very few films which shows he is picky about his choices. What else can explain so few movies since he made his debut in 2000? In Mohenjo Daro he has teamed up with his Jodhaa Akbar director Ashutosh Gowariker once again. They created magic back in 2008, can they recreate the same magic 8 years later? The insipid promos have kept the buzz very low and the choice of someone like Pooja Hegde hasn't exactly made people crazy. Without even talking about the clash with Rustom, let's get to the movie. Does Mohenjo Daro work as a movie? Time to find out.

Story: Set amid the ancient Indus Valley civilization circa 2016 B.C.E, an indigo farmer from Amri, Sindh named Sarman (Hrithik Roshan) travels upriver to the largest city, Mohenjo-daro, where during a street mishap he saves the life of a beautiful woman named Chaani (Pooja Hegde) who as "The Chosen One" in service to Sindhu Ma, the goddess of the river which is the centre of their culture, is "the symbol of Mother Sindhu's grace and blessing." But Sarman soon falls afoul of the politician Maham (Kabir Bedi) and his son Moonja (Arunoday Singh) who are seizing power and starting to rule Mohenjo Daro as an empire. To win Chaani, Sarman must defeat Maham and rouse the people to save their city.

Mohenjo Daro Review: First things first, Mohenjo Daro is not a historical drama or a historical romance. It is a love story which happens to be a fantasy and has the setting of the Indus valley civilization as its background. Ashutosh Gowariker does a neat job of placing the love story in that era but the movie doesn't quite come together in the end. It all feels a bit disjointed where we get to see snippets of life from that era for a few scenes and then a cheesy love story for the next few scenes and the cycle continues. There's also the terrible visual effects work in the climax. How did Gowariker allow it to appear in the final movie? It is painful to see that Gowariker has forgotten to make his brand of epic sagas after Jodha Akbar. Mohenjo Daro lacks the deft touch of a Swades or a Lagaan.

Mohenjo Daro Movie Review

Mohenjo Daro Movie Review

We don't want to play historical critics and we are not going to comment about the historical accuracies or inaccuracies. The editing of Mohenjo Daro is snappier than Gowariker's past movies but it still ends up being about 10-15 mins too long. The production design and costume design all look huge in scale and the crocodile scene doesn't have the same impact as the makers intended. The visual effects of Mohenjo Daro is one of the main drawbacks of the movie. It is just too shabby. What were the makers thinking allowing this to be in the final version? Even Indian cartoon network shows have better visual effects. The music of Mohenjo Daro, even if it is by AR Rahman, is not noteworthy. A younger music director could have infused fresher tones into the movie.

Acting: Hrithik Roshan is a good actor, we all know that. But why then does he keep choosing movies which don't give his acting range the full potential? He is fine in Mohenjo Daro and is perfect as someone who would resemble Hrithik Roshan in 2016 BCE. He acts, and fights and even dances like only he can. Pooja Hegde is unfortunately a disappointment. She feels miscast for the role even though she seems talented. She is expressive, considering this is her debut movie. Kabir Bedi is menacing and is perfectly cast as the main antagonist. Arunoday Singh looks the part but doesn't act the part.

Conclusion: Mohenjo Daro feels like a big let off because it rues the scale that it tries to showcase. A movie based in the Indus valley civilization definitely deserved to be more fully thought out, but Mohenjo Daro comes across as a plain love story. Don't go in as a history professor, but go in as a casual audience member who is getting to see cool sets and naturally lit studios dressed up as Mohenjo Daro.

Mohenjo Daro is far from a bad film, it is in fact a good film but we can't help but feel sad about the fact that it could have been a huge Magnum Opus. That leaves a sour taste. If you go in expecting nothing, then you might even love Mohenjo Daro. For what it's worth, the movie could be watched once.

Pros:

  • The era it tries to showcase
  • Grand scale showing through cinematography and production design
  • Hrithik Roshan is in his usual good form
  • The movie starts off very well

Cons:

  • It descends into a predictable love story which could have been set in any time period
  • Pooja Hegde is miscast
  • The music is disappointing
  • The visual effects are downright terrible

Movie Review - Mohenjo Daro

Directed By - Ashutosh Gowariker
Produced By - Siddharth Roy Kapur & Sunita Gowariker
Story & Screenplay - Ashutosh Gowariker
Music - A. R. Rehman
Duration - 150 Minutes
Starring - Hrithik Roshan , Pooja Hegde, Kabir Bedi, Arunoday Singh & Narendra Jha

Rating - 4/5 Stars

Director Ashutosh Gowariker's much awaited " Mohenjo Daro " is an epic adventure - romance film, which is set in 2600 BC at the height of the Indus Valley Civilisation. The film revolves around the story of young Indigo farmer Sarman ( Hrithik Roshan ), who resides with his uncle close to the areas of Mohenjo Daro and travels to the great city. During a street mishap he saves the life of a beautiful woman named Chaani ( Pooja Hegde ) , a high status woman and the daughter of the priest (Manish Choudhary ) he falls in love with Chaani but Sarman soon falls afoul of the politician Maham ( Kabir Bedi ) & his son Moonja ( Arunoday Singh ) who are seizing power & starting to rule Mohenjo Daro as an empire. To win Chaani's love , Sarman must defeat Maham & rouse the people to save their city.. what happens next forms the crux of the story.

Hats off to Director Ashutosh Gowariker , he has done extensive research to develope its script for 3 years & worked with world's top 7 Archaeologists. Ashutosh penned the amazing screenplay with engaging fictional story. His hard work visible in each frame. Brilliant. first half is gripping and bit slow but in second half the amazing fight scene is one of the best fight scenes filmed at recent times in Bollywood. Climax of the film wraps nicely. C. K. Muraleedharan's cinematography is one of Mohenjo Daro's key strengths, specially fight sequence camera captures gloriously, making you feel like you're right out there where the action is. Film's music score is composed by A.R. Rahman, is not type that you take to instantly but yes tracks like " Tu Hai " & " Sindhu Maa " are attracted listeners attention.

Let's talk about Performance -

Hrithik brings his muscular presence & charismatic personality to make the role his own. As Sarman he delivers a career best performance , I cannot think of any other actor who could play this better. As Chaani ,sometimes feisty, sometimes graceful leading lady.

Pooja Hegde is wonderfully restrained and uses her eyes expertly to communicate so much. making this one of her finest outings on screen. Kabir Bedi makes a lasting impression as Maham, besides Hrithik & Pooja , Kabir delivered brilliant performance.

Final Verdict - Mohenjo Daro is a masterpiece which will be celebrated for years to come.

Director: Ashutosh Gowarikar

Mohenjo Daro Movie Poster

What's Good: Hrithik Roshan even with his bronze tan tries to entertain us as Sarman. He is probably the only best thing in the film!

What's Bad: Mohenjo Daro looks like a costume drama with bad CGI and an absolutely shoddy editing.

Loo Break: Yes! Take long ones.

Watch or Not?: Mohenjo Daro is a period drama that misses the train right from start. The story is too ordinary and it did not need an Indus valley civilization backing to it. This one is easily passable!

Sarman (Hrithik Roshan) is an Indigo peasant living with his uncle and aunt in Aamli village. After hearing big things about the town where they trade their goods, Sarman convinces his uncle to send him to Mohenjo Daro for trade.

He takes off for the town and seems to have a strange familiarity with the place.

After experiencing the ill-treatment given to peasants by Maham (Kabir Bedi) and his son Moonja (Arunoday Singh), Sarman decides to leave the town.

What changes his mind is, a love at first sight scenario with Chaani (Pooja Hegde). She is the priest's daughter and considered to be a blessing for the town but is promised in marriage to Moonja.

Will Sarman take on Mooja and Maham to win his love? Also, what connection does he have to Mohenjo Daro is what lies ahead.

Mohenjo Daro Review: Script Analysis

Ever since Mohenjo Daro has been announced, there has been ample of excitement surrounding it. Coming up with a script for a period drama that has little historic material can be certainly difficult and one would definitely understand that the makers would require creative liberties for this one.

Although in case of this film, the creative liberties are way beyond one would expect. Script wise this is a highly formulaic film with even a DDLJ element of Palat' in the love story.

The typical, good vs evil angle is done to death and that is exactly what happens in Mohenjo Daro. For heaven sake, the same story could have been based in 2016 BC Bombay and no one would care.

Not only is the love story stale, also the way the movie starts one could even say it seems inspired from Baahubali where Shiva is excited to climb the mountain and go to other side of the town.

It is funny from where all the writers take inspiration for this film, there is even a iksinga' (one-thorned horse) that Sarman keeps dreaming about and mind you, this is like a Garibon ka Harry Potter' co-incidence. It is similar to the patronous that Harry sees.

At start, a different language is used to give some actual historic feel but there are no subtitles given so its just gibberish for the audience.

Gowarikar even repeats his own films, as at one point the peasants are protesting against taxes they can't pay (remember Lagaan?) and also like in Swades the entire village comes together to generate electricity, here they build a bridge to save themselves of their town which is drowning. Yawn!

Mohenjo Daro Review: Star Performance

Hrithik Roshan is an actor who goes the extra mile for most of his films and he does the same for this one too. He delivers a decent performance in an already botched up script. His action scenes with Bhakar-Zokar are good enough.

Pooja Hegde debuts with this film and well, she does not have much to do other than plastering a good smile on her face. As Chaani, she seems like an ordinary girl, nothing periodic about it other than the costumes.

Kabir Bedi as Maham plans to scare kids with this role. He keeps smirking in weird ways and I now feel he should have borrowed a few bitchy expressions from Esha Gupta's Rustom character. His over dramatic act puts you off!

Manish Chaudhary plays the priest and Chaani's father. He does a decent job.

Arunoday Singh too fails to rise above his other performances.

Marathi actresses, Suhasini Mooley and Kishori Shahane give their extra bit of drama with the side characters.

Mohenjo Daro Review: Direction, Music

Ashutosh Gowarikar seems to have a penchant for testing people's patience. This film is another example of that. After the first frame which states 2016 BC in bold words, there is nothing portrayed ahead that backs it.

In the first fifteen minutes itself, I was scared of what lies ahead since the film opens with the much-talked about crocodile scene. The special effects are so poor that you can't help but get disgusted by it.

Further, the film's characters look like they are stuck in a role-playing act where they have to play dress-up. 2016 B.C had gladiators as footwear and here I am still trying to save up to buy a good pair of them. Damn! I need to go back.

Chaani's headgear is a better version of the Snapchat filter and more often than not it looks like she is wearing a bird's nest on her head.

The long shots that show the planned city as history states it are also of poor quality. I wish Gowarikar had consulted Rajamouli before doing this.

The entire action sequence with the hideous names of the Bhakar Zokar is quite decently helmed and probably the only saving grace in the second half.

In spite of claiming to have cut down the film's run-time, this seems like a never ending affair. First half is bearable, but the second half really tests your patience. The climax sequence of the drowning city is another case of bad CGI.

The sets look magnificent but with no substance in story, it is a waste.

A R Rahman's music suits the film's setting but does not help to make it bearable.

Mohenjo Daro Review: The Last Word

Mohenjo Daro is a major failure in terms of both history and execution. I'm going with a 1.5/5 for this film.

Mohenjo Daro Movie Review By Audience

People have good buzz for the movie like I told you above but the main concept is this movie is getting good competition from the other co-release Rustom and they both attracting audience towards them. MohenjoDaro which shall be the world's first cinematic presentation referencing the ancient Indus Valley civilization and its greatest city, the UNESCO World Heritage site known today only as Mohenjo-daro.

Where the film fails to work in the acting department. In fact, in some instances, it almost appears amateur. The script is pretty mundane too. Serious history lovers may find parts of Mohenjo Daro amusing. Ardent film lovers will find it tedious and boring.

Akshay Kumar Beats Hrithik Roshan In The Initial Stakes

Rustom has come out on top initially between the clash of Mohenjo Daro and Rustom basically meaning Akshay Kumar comes out ahead of Hrithik Roshan. The opening of Rustom is around 35-40% while Mohenjo Daro is around 25%. The opening of Rustom is good while Mohenjo Daro is below the mark. Rustom has opened on 1900 theatres which will be around 2300 screens while Mohenjo Daro has opened on 2100 theatres which will be 2500 screens. Rustom has probably taken an opening which is among the top three of the year and this is a good result considering it was a clash. The films are close in single screens with Mohenja Daro even being ahead at many but in the multiplexes more or less across the country it is Rustom with a comfortable lead.

The key is Mumbai, Delhi / UP and East Punjab which are the bigger markets forming over 60% for films like Rustom and Mohejo Daro and all these markets has Rustom ahead. Mumbai was always going to come on Rustom side but with a Mumbai based subject, North could have been harder to pull through but the strong pull of Akshay Kumar has probably helped there. Mohenjo Daro is leading in South where Hrithik Roshan has a bigger draw, Mysore will be close though Mohenjaro Daro will come out on top in Nizam / Andhra and Tamil Nadu / Kerala. Mohenjo Daro also holds chances in East India but that just wont be enough as the main markets of North and Mumbai are with Rustom.

Mohenjo Daro Box Office Collections and Opening: Friday (Day 1)

7 mins agoby Indicine Team2 Comments2 min read

Hrithik Roshan's Mohenjo Daro has taken a poor start at domestic box office on Friday. The opening isn't disastrous, but considering the budget that the film has been made on, the occupancy for the morning shows should have been more than double to what it has managed.

Hrithik's star power has ensured a decent initial, especially in the South, but there is very little that a star can do when the general response to almost every promo of the film was negative.

Mohenjo Daro will now depend on word-of-mouth to even have an outside chance to recover costs through theatrical business. If the film isn't liked, it could well be one of the biggest disasters of the year.

The opening numbers on Friday morning suggests a 9-10 crore start, but a lot would depend on what sort of growth the film manages evening onwards. It can't afford a drop from here.

The original language was ancient Sindhi.. during the croc fight, none of us understood it.. and then HR was welcomed as a hero to his village.. and the village chief was speaking Sindhi.. till the camera zooms in on his mouth and zooms out to him speaking original Hindi..

No time wasted for what language they spoke and narratives as I suspected Amitabh will come in play.

But you r right. VFX let this movie down.. which is a shame. Let's see if Hr can compensate the VFX.

Afterall, HR has to carry iut all by himself. One man army.
