A New Rs 100 Cr Club
(July 9, 2016)
Back in 2008, Aamir Khan's Ghajini was the first blockbuster to hit the magical
Rs.100-crore mark at the box office, giving rise to the Rs.100-crore club', a term used ad nauseum since then. Now - hold your breath - Blockbuster' Salman Khan is all set to start a new Rs.100-crore club with his latest release Sultan.
Judging by the response from the audience, it is moot that the film is headed for a long run and will set a record for lifetime business. Now, according to the deal between Yash Raj Films (YRF) and Salman Khan, it seems the superstar will walk away with Rs.100 crore plus as remuneration - a first for any actor in India.
Khan was roped in only as the leading man and was not involved with the production of this film. The cost of production, excluding Khan's remuneration, was
Rs.60 crore. Add publicity expenses and the cost of Sultan becomes Rs.80 crore. And YRF and Khan shook hands on a 50:50 partnership for the profits.
If sources close to YRF are to be believed, the satellite rights of the film have been sold to Sony for a whopping Rs.61 crore and the music rights, which are with YRF, are valued at Rs.12 crore.
The film has done record business in its first two days and is going very strong at the ticket counters. Hence it is sure that Salman Khan will walk away with Rs.100 crore plus as remuneration. Here's three cheers to Blockbuster Khan for launching a new
Rs.100-crore club. Let's wait and see who else walks this hallowed ground.
