Is it so difficult to comprehend that Hindi is spoken by everyone outside their house in Mumbai, its the ground reality so to speak...a child in a playschool interacting with other children, in the playground, with the domestic help, with the bus driver, watchman,...every bloody person. Hindi is a fundamental driver of the child's early socialisation in Mumbai...it links him with his social environment and is the only means for communicating with the world outside the 4 walls of his home in Mumbai. If that does not compel the child to become a native speaker of Hindi I don't know what will

Besides, Hindi is not the only language spoken in Mumbai. Marathi and English are too. And she knows all the three languages. Does it make her a native speaker of Hindi, Marathi, English and Tulu then? No it doesn't. It is called mother tongue/first language for a reason.

This is what I meant when I said ground reality...which I am possibly more well acquainted with than you are unless of course you are a Mumbaikar too.

Marathi is not spoken by most non- Maharashtrians otherwise our Bollywood stars raised in Mumbai , who are your reference point, like aamir, Ranbir, etc would not have openly declared their inability to speak Marathi. It is taught only for 3-4 years in ICSE and CBSE schools here, where most of upper middle class send their kids. Further, Mumbai being as cosmopolitan as it is, has people from all over India coming together and those in the lower strata cannot speak English. Hindi alone unites everyone...it is what the kiraanawala, autorickshaw wala, domestic help, dhobi, raddiwala, watchman, pretty much everyone speaks in Mumbai.

So this means we must stop bashing Kat for not learning the language of this industry after all these year? 😆
Worked in this industry for years, studied in Mumbai (where she must have had basic learning of Hindi). Should be applaud Rani (Bengali , her first language) , Kajol (Marathi) for knowing Hindi too. Add Shilpa, Vidya , Tabu as well.😆

Still don\'t think her Punjabi diction is good. Will wait for the movie to see how she does it there.

I have relatives in Bombay, and they have children who were born there, and they do not really speak Hindi much. I mean they do understand but don't speak much, just like Marathi. They only converse in English or Telugu. I am sure the kids do not really hang out with the kiranawala, raddiwala, dhobi, watchman etc to converse with them in Hindi and to grasp the language well enough for them to become fluent in it. So what is the ground reality, really, that you claim to know? Because this is a reality too, and it is in stark contrast from what you described. I am sure there are exceptions in every case.. but to generalize and say just because one is brought up in Bombay, Hindi becomes their native language isn't always true.

And to say she is a native Hindi speaker because people around her speak that language and that she is taught the same in school, we Indians could also be called native English speakers, since English is also given equal importance as Hindi and other languages and has been declared an official language, plus we learn it in school, heck we go to English medium schools.. but does that make us native English speakers? No it doesn't. Our native language is our first language, or what our parents first taught us when we were born. And in Aishwarya's case, it was clear it wasn't Hindi.

I rest my case now.

@Bold...forgive me but I had no clue you are related to gazillionaires...we normal middle class kids do have to hang out with the kiranawala, raddiwala, dhobi, watchman, etc, to make it through our daily chores😭
