Exactly. There are many bunts or shettys who live in Mumbai and most of them talk in Hindi even with their relatives down south, it's not that difficult a language to learn and become proficient in if one speaks it daily.

There are many people here (in south) who speak better hindi than some of the north indian kids studying here.

This is the precise reason a Kareena would never do a South Indian film... she will have to learn the language for that, and it's not a walk in the park.

So many people who change cities for work/living are fluent in other languages which ain't their mother tongue. It's no big deal really. Just a part of survival. Moreover, it's relatively easy for a South Indian to learn Hindi than for a North Indian to learn a SI language as southies have quite some exposure to the language, in school..through films etc..etc..

Many native Hindi speakers spend a lot of time in Bengaluru/Hyderabad, but hardly even learn the basic words of the local languages, whereas South Indians are more eager/open to learn new languages. Nothing to do with survival. One can survive only with English too.

Firstly, I'm a south indian and I know all the languages mentioned above.

So I can tell you with experience that it's MUCH easier for a Southie to learn Hindi than it is for a North Indian to learn languages like Tulu, Tamil, Telegu or Kannada because it's much much different and not as common as Hindi is unless you live in the South.
Yes, for a south indian to speak hindi, it might be difficult due to the accent but that can be easily overcome by speaking the language daily and with time. However, for a North Indian it's much difficult because it's not just accent but the whole language that is entirely new to them where as Hindi is national language of our country and it's taught in every school down South.

FYI: Hindi is not our national language and it is not taught in every school down South.

I am a Tulu born and brought up in Mumbai and all of us only speak Hindi in my family...every Mumbai born Tulu that I've met speaks perfectly unaccented Hindi...as a matter of fact my Hindi accent is more Punjabised according to some who do not know I am a South Indian...so no its no big deal if a South Indian born in Mumbai speaks good Hindi...heck look at Shilpa Shetty, Vidya Balan and the like.

Its too bloody easy to learn Hindi in Mumbai cause everyone here only speaks Hindi even more than Marathi.

Yes but then Ash studied in Arya Vidya Mandir, Khar...which is a ICSE school and being an ICSE medium student from Mumbai too let me tell you we have Hindi as a subject from 1st standard to 10th in all schools unless some schools at that time were offering some other language in 8th standard.

Plus Ash and I have attended the same college in the science stream...Jai Hind College..where again under the state HSC Board you had to opt for Hindi as one of the languages if you were a Bio student with Hindi in 10th. So there you go...she must have like every other ICSE student from Mumbai studied Hindi for 12 years at most.

So who said she didn't study Hindi in school? 😕😆 I was only rejecting the generalization that Hindi is taught in all schools and that Hindi is our national language.. no it isn't.
