BV did not affect her career negatively at all. She walked away with praise.
BUT had it been a big hit, then it would have taken her a notch higher.
She was riding the wave of PK + NH10..
In my opinion, it could have helped her campaign for the Best Actress awards, because it's all about momentum, but BV hardly rocked the boat.

I know many found her annoying or "playing the same bubbly character" but I thought she was fantastic as Akira.

^In JTHJ, Anushka had the same advantage as Parineeti in LVRB: given the better/more vivacious character with fun/relatable lines compared to others who were generic and unexciting. The material in the Samar-Meera storyline was downright insipid/outdated and seemed like a whole different world from the Samar/Akira setting (so much so that Samar was a totally different guy between the two stories.) So I think Anushka lucked out there, because even though many didn't like the shrill/over the top character, it was the only role with spark and banter to rustle things up.

@InquisitiveSoul: Highway as a movie was critically panned by the major reviewers. It's Alia's performance that was praised. However, I respect your opinion, and there are of course people who loved Rockstar, Tamasha, Love Aaj Kal too. The industry holds Imtiaz Ali in high esteem as well. It's simply as one part of the audience that I don't find him to be a solid storyteller.

Those scenes with Samar and Akira...damn! Now I'm not in the category of those who hated Samar and Meera but I'm a huge fan of Shahrukh and Anushka's on screen pairing and they absolutely lit up the screen as Samar and Akira. Even though his feelings for her were platonic , there was just so much chemistry in their scenes. The bit where she's bidding him goodbye and he tells her "mere jaise mat banna" and she goes "too late"...that bit gets to me everytime man.

I find that so hard to digest, are you joking?

She needs to come with Shruti Kakkar and I am ready to go gaga all over again. 😛

Anupama Chopra is my favourite reviewer, I agree with her 99% of the time. And she's so eloquent and die-hard.

But I see most of the reviewers you linked to had a problem with the fact that a young girl falls in love with her kidnappers in a climate, as Rajeev Masand puts it "disturbing in a society grappling with women's safety" - so I get where they're coming from.

But I'm still shocked at 2 stars. For me, it's one of the best films of the 21st century. Top 25!
Perhaps the critics need to watch it again, without the "women safety" issue clouding their minds. Because that shows that they misread the character of Mahabir. Yes he is a monster at first glance, but then we see his vulnerable side, his abuse as a child, we see that he has a heart, just like any one of us.

Subjectivity and opinions! As I said to the other member, people have different views on different movies of his including those other than Highway. The whole point is that IA is a polarizing filmmaker. People do not understand/read his stories and characters the same way, perhaps because he is unable to relay them such that they are taken convincingly in a certain, set way.
