Kapoor & Sons is a portrait of human frailty, says Anupama Chopra.

"It's about our wounds, our flaws, our losses, our resentments and our regrets. It's about the pain we inflict on each other. And it's about the ties that bind each other as well. And the love that endures. The love that ultimately allows us to do both. Forgive ourselves and find redemption in our relationships," said Chopra.

FILM REVIEW: KAPOOR & SONS

By Kunal Guha, Mumbai Mirror | Mar 18, 2016, 08.13 PM IST

Dysfunctionally yours

Hindi films have introduced us to many families - those with single parents, those that dance together with their pets and even those that reunite in the afterlife. But here's a less ideal one, peppered with conflicts and nursing much angst for each other. And yet somehow, managing to crease out their differences by the end of the film.

Set in the Nilgiri district of Coonoor, Kapoor & Sons opens to a grandfather (Rishi Kapoor), whose oldest prank of pretending to fall dead takes a grave turn when he actually survives a heart attack. His grandsons, Arjun (Siddharth Malhotra), a struggling writer and part-time bartender in New Jersey and Rahul (Fawad Khan), an established novelist based in London are immediately summoned by their mother (Ratna Pathak Shah) and father (Rajat Kapoor). Their arrival is marked by multiple revelations as family secrets spill out, leading to soaring emotions and much heartburn. In the midst of this family drama, there's neighbourhood hottie Tia (Alia Bhatt), who bumps into both the Kapoor siblings, one at a time, resulting in awkward kisses, drunk dancing and a pleasant passage of time. But this isn't a love triangle, and much less a love story. It's about the Kapoor family's endurance of their reality and about their ability to accept and forgive. The film's plot is wafer thin and if you've seen the trailers, you'd have a fair idea of where this one leads. But the money is in the sequence of events and the build-up to the collective outbursts as parallel situations escalate quickly and simultaneously and occasionally even influence each other.

The part that seems a bit off is the brotherly love-and-hate rhapsody which swings from an emotion to another like a grandfather clock without much explanation. In one scene, they're out for each other's blood; in another, all is forgiven (or forgotten?). While, one can assume that this speaks volumes about the character's maturity, it could also been seen as lazy writing. And for a film that spends 140 minutes to express itself, this can't be dismissed as an oversight.

While many cast members have their moments in this film, it is Fawad Khan who owns it. His range of complex emotions leads to a balanced performance. Alia Bhatt manages well as a girl-next-door and her character does much to add a bit of cheer to this otherwise intense film. Veteran Ratna Pathak Shah's endearing, world-weary mother is believable and her ability to fluidly furnish the cynicism of a weathered relationship is priceless. Rishi Kapoor, under layers of prosthetic makeup, is appropriately cocky as the naughty grandpa who takes much joy in saying inappropriate things and Rajat Kapoor is a natural as a layered dad. It would be unfair to say that Siddharth Malhotra sticks out like a sore thumb among these star performers as he tries his best too. But the fact is, in the scenes where his character breaks down, tears roll down an unforgivably expressionless facade " it leaves a trail but the surface remains firm and creaseless.

Director Shakun Batra has matured from a filmmaker solely capable of romcoms to one who can infuse depth into characters and script relationships in all its verity. This film takes an alternate KJo route, to say that it's all about accepting and forgiving your family. Sure, you didn't get to pick one, but now that you're stuck with one, accept it. Like a mole on your forehead, it's distracting, embarrassing and obnoxious, but it's all yours.

Kapoor and Sons: A Wistful Narration

One must admit this about Shakun Batra, he is one of the few directors in Bollywood, alongside Sriram Raghavan, Shimit Amin and Bejoy Nambiar, who can capture even the most mundane of surroundings and give it a refreshing twist. His debut feature, Ek Main Aur Ek Tu combined the craft of Wes Anderson, and the feel of Woody Allen, and while the influence of 2 Days in Paris was quite evident, it was a refreshing take on the rom com genre, and also contained one of Kareena Kapoor's finest performances. Therefore, in his sophomoric effort, when he takes on the dysfunctional family trope centred around the aged patriarch's 90th birthday, the family reunion, and the ensuing chaos, combined with an ensemble cast, one cannot help but be intrigued at how it shall all come to pass.

Rahul and Arjun Kapoor (Fawad Khan and Siddharth Malhotra) are estranged brothers, living contrasting lives in London and New Jersey, away from their family estate in Coonoor. Rahul is a successful author, struck by writer's block as he struggles to meet the deadline for his next book. Arjun is a wanderer, flitting between jobs, currently working as a bartender to make ends meet, while trying to get his own book published. When they get a call from home saying Daddu (Rishi Kapoor) has had a heart attack, and wishes to see them, they have no option but to go back home, where secrets will spill out, new relationships will be forged and old relationships threaten to fall apart.

The first thing you notice in Kapoor and Sons, is that for the most part, the relationships, the interactions between the characters, the unfolding of the plot, everything seems organic. Although, for some reason, Batra seems to be in a hurry throughout to keep things moving. In fact, this turns out to be one of 3 minor quibbles in an otherwise perfect film. One wishes that he'd let the story breathe, let the audience really get a feel of the conflict between the characters and also within themselves. The cinematography by Jeffrey Bierman is top-notch and really lets us get a glimpse of what's happening inside the Kapoor mansion, and by extension, in their minds. The background score gels well for the most, but at times, it does get a tad intrusive in scenes, where silence would have really made a bigger impact. In spite of the slightly hurried proceedings, the writing is for the most, first-rate, even though one would feel that at least 2-3 characters were underdeveloped.

First things first, Fawad Khan's performance in this movie stands out, and surpasses the rest of the cast by miles. Right from the beginning of the movie, when we see him wistfully gazing at the wall of photos, right up to the end where he comes face to face with his inner demons and how they have impacted his relationships, no amount of superlatives can do justice to his performance. Rishi Kapoor's performance here reminds one of Amitabh Bachchan's in Paa. The makeup aside, there really isn't much to talk about, except for a couple of scenes here and there, like the video call to his grandsons in the climax. Siddharth Malhotra is all right for the most part, but his lack of acting chops is made glaringly obvious in the more dramatic scenes, where he quite clearly looks out of his depth. Alia Bhatt plays the manic pixie dream girl to perfection and is a bright ray of sunshine in an otherwise dark story, but her character is pretty redundant plot-wise. Rajat Kapoor and Ratna Pathak Shah pitch in with fine performances that are heart-breaking in their subtlety.

Overall, a fine, albeit slightly flawed effort, Kapoor and Sons nevertheless deserves to be watched, just for the fact that it refuses to take the melodramatic route for the most, and can boast of some compelling performances. But most of all, for reminding us through Fawad Khan, that the best performances needn't necessarily be the loudest👏👏👏👏👏

I am already going tomorrow yaar.

but yes all the people who have seen and gave their take talked about how the film is all about family dynamics and its not about sexuality of an individual. as Anupama Chopra said its the struggle for Fawad's character to get burdened by his own perfections and fighting the demons.
