I think it would only work if it's done to capitalize on a major mid-week holiday, such as Thanksgiving. Most of the other major holidays are either ubiquitous worldwide (Christmas, New Year's) or fall on a Monday (Memorial Day, Labor Day), and would not warrant earlier releases. Aside from Thanksgiving, the only other time that an early release could work is Independence Day, because it's on a different day of the week every year. If it was not on a holiday, I don't think many people would have even noticed that Tamasha released in the middle of the week.
But I do think it would be interesting to take a deeper look at the effects of early reviews from overseas on the reviews and business in India.
Also, I wonder if filmmakers/producers/whatevers will start taking foreign holidays into consideration when releasing films... especially for films that may be targeted more at NRI/overseas audiences.
