Over the years, Bollywood has showcased various sides of love - the one where you can't live without each other and the one where you can't live with each other. But most of these have been the conventional girl-meets-boy and happily-ever-after stories. But Kangana Ranaut and Imran Khan promise to bring something new to the table with their upcoming movie Katti Batti'.
The lead pair of the movie was in New Delhi for the promotional duties of their movie and in an exclusive conversation with The Indian Express revealed that contrary to the popular belief, Katti Batti' is not about live-in relationships.
Then why did they interact with the live-in couples? "It's just the way that the film is marketed. Though I had suggested to the team that this should not be done. It reflects just one side of the movie. Katti Batti' is a very intense movie and unfolds like a thriller and the second half conveys the darkness and intensity of emotions. Especially the last half an hour. It will make you cry. But obviously nobody took my advice; they wanted to do their own thing," rues Kangana Ranaut, who looked lovely in a printed Dolce & Gabbana dress.
Earlier, films like Salaam Namastey' and the likes didn't do that well at the Box Office. So, this movie might also be meted out a similar treatment?
"I don't feel this will harm the movie. We have a great movie in our hands, and people will love it. And it's my responsibility to tell the people that a) It's not a rom-com and b) It's not about live-in relationships. It is an intense, hard-hitting film. And it will make everybody cry. I cried," said Kangana explaining the plot of the movie.
Similar thoughts were echoed by her co-star Imran Khan, who says, "I think people have perception like that because the opening scene of the film, which is also the opening scene of the trailer says that they live-in together. The truth is that the live-in aspect of the relationship doesn't have any bearing on any other aspect of their relationship. Their parents are not opposed to it. It's a relationship where there are no external factors that are separating them. It's the issues between them that cause the rift. I also think that when we make movies, not just Bollywood or Hollywood, we tend to look at the superficial aspects of love. I love her because she is so beautiful.' Love doesn't happen like that. That's not the reality of an adult relationship."
"A real relationship would be, You love somebody despite...' And that's what we are trying to show in the movie," quips Imran.
So, how is it different from his earlier release Break Ke Baad'? "Honestly, there's a lot that I liked about the film. Second half I think we meandered a li'l bit. Also, their reasons for breaking up never quite made sense to me. But Katti Batti' did resonate with him. You know when Nikhil was narrating the script to me, there were a dozen times, when I thought I have had this fight'. This would make everybody cry," says Imran.
Well, it surely did make Imran's maamu', superstar Aamir Khan cry. "Yes it did. And it would make all cry. And what's the use of making an emotional movie when it can't make you cry," opines Imran.
Earlier, in another exclusive conversation with Indian Express at the Express Adda, Kangana had said that people now want raw and real women on screen. And by the looks of it, the audiences have indeed accepted her as the real, strong woman. Characters like those from the movies Gangster', Once Upon A Time In Mumbai', Tanu Weds Manu' and TWM Returns', and Queen' bear a testimony to that.
"I think Payal is the strongest character I have played on screen. By far the strongest. It's been so overwhelming to play this woman, in the film, not in the marketing (chuckles). Everytime I shot for Payal's scenes, I would go home and cry and cry and cry; it left such a lasting impression on my conscience. Payal's character is so tragedy stricken, so hard...my heart bled everytime I shot for the scenes. When I agreed to do it, I didn't realise it would be so hard, but it turned out to be so intense," Kangana added.
So does she think she is getting stereotyped for playing the strong woman roles? "I don't mind that. I have had my journey. I respect myself a lot now because I know how much I have struggled and I took every opportunity that came my way. I have done supporting roles too in Fashion' or Krrish 3', so now if I am being considered for such strong roles, I am fine with this tag of a strong performer," says Kangana.
But this tag only didn't prove to be good for Vidya Balan when she opted for movies like Shaadi Ke Side Effects'? "Vidya is a great performer and everybody has a journey. She will definitely bounce back. I am also ready to take it all. The course of life should not be linear. It's linear only if you're dead. Ups and downs are a part of life," Kangana gives the mantra to live life like a Queen', indeed.
Katti Batti', directed by Nikhil Advani' releases on September 4.
Actors Imran Khan and Kangana Ranaut spent an eventful hour chatting and answering fun questions during their visit to HT City to meet the winners of Stars In The City Contest. Both the actors shared that they sometimes have to deal with tricky situations and answer inane questions.
Kangana, for instance, is absolutely fed up with questions about her career. "When a question starts with, Actress ki shelf life toh do teen saal hi hoti hai, toh aap uske baad kya karengi?' Kyun main koi sabun ki tikiya hoon kya jo life do saal ki hoti hai? It is so lame!" she said, laughing.
For Imran, it's questions about his uncle, actor Aamir Khan, that irk him. "When the question starts with, Apke Maamu ...' I know that I want to slap that person," he joked.
Talking about how some fans get uncomfortably close while trying to click a selfie, Kangana said: "It is not very comfortable when people put their hand around your waist ... it's very weird."
Imran, too, faces similar issues. "Let me give you a male perspective here. When I take photos with girls, there is always this very excited hug. But when I pose for a photo with guys, their hand immediately goes to my behind. I have to tell people, Sir, apna haath thoda upar le lijiye'," he said.
When actors Kangana Ranaut and Imran Khan visited HT City to meet the winners of the Stars in the City contest, and promote their upcoming film, Katti Batti, they bonded well with their fans. In a free-wheeling chat with Sonal Kalra - National Editor, Entertainment and Lifestyle, the stars spoke about their experiences with fans, working with each other, and how Kangana was never invited to Imran's parties.
What is the weirdest thing a fan has done for you?
Imran: I have been bitten by a fan. It happened in Dubai when we were going to a night club and I was shaking hands with everyone. This one girl just grabbed my hand, pulled me close and refused to let go. Then she bit my hand.
Kangana: My fans are really sweet. They write me love letters, which say that I look like their lost wife from their past life.
Imran: While you get love letters, I get bitten.
What is the one thing about Imran that got to you?
Kangana: I think he made a lot of friends. He made friends on the sets with people who were playing his friends in the film. I used to hear stories about them partying in his house and having beer and kababs, and I was like, Why am I not invited? This guy is weird.' The next day, he was his usual friendly self, and described the parties to me, showing not a single hint of awkwardness.
Imran: She is vegetarian. Isko kya khilayen?
But, how was it working with Kangana?
Imran: I had a blast working with her. The one thing I really like about her is that she is very dedicated to her work. I have worked with people who just walk in. And while they may be very sweet, you wish they might have put in more effort into the film. Kangana is one person who comes and tries to improve every day. These are the kind of people you respect.
Any movie you think you shouldn't have said no to?
Kangana: None actually. I made the most of my opportunities. I have done more than what was offered to me.
What is the one thing you love about the film industry?
Imran: You might read a lot of stories about people fighting in Bollywood. But somehow, when it really comes to it, the industry comes together and we don't give up. There is a sense of solidarity, which I like.

In Dubai to promote their much-anticipated film, Katti Batti, Kangana Ranaut and Imran Khan seemed to have great chemistry when I met them for an exclusive, quick chat on August 31 at the Grand Hyatt in Dubai, where the production's press conference was due to take place.
Amidst brooding body guards, excited photographers, event organisers and a plethora of journalists and socialites, the stars were earnest when speaking about their characters in the film. For Kangana, Payal was one of the most challenging and emotionally draining characters she ever played. Dressed in a feminine red dress, with her tight curls framing her striking face, Kangana stated that Katti Batti stood as one of the most unique and poignant love stories to have come out of Bollywood.
Imran, with his boyish charm and overall easy-going sweetness, talked about his character, Madhav, and how physically exhausting his 24-hour lip-lock session (shot over three days) with Kangana was for the film's song,Lip to Lip!
