Quality films have their own audience. They always got appreciated. That's why Anand, Parichay, Abhimaan etc were successes so were Mother India which is ATBB.
You have no right to call other films garbage. Other films have their audience.
People have different tastes. Majority is different. Niche tastes are different.
These discussions only hold good online. I remember bashing TRP aunties on EHT forum. But now I realise where they might be coming from.
I find load of shows and films crap but can't deny they have their own audience.
I know conventional entertainer just takes your mind off other things. It offers diversion.
An aam aadmi just needs a superhero he can relate to. Those heroes fighting bad guys, winning at end and having both family and heroine are aspirational for those guys! They fuel their dreams. And even those who dislike such films, watch then just to claim how crap they were. Either way, makers win as they only want more viewers.
Say what you will but these arguments are just online. Fact is that masala never went out of fashion. It never will.
You people also remember stars for entertainers only. I really wanna know if you watched Satyakam or Main Azaad Hoon or Mili or Swades or Raakh or Phir Milenge in theatres!
Talk to any common person, he knows YJHD or APKGK more than Barfi. (I am even talking regular college kids and not just aam aadmi who likes filth, in your words).
You too focus on stars only. Otherwise tell me how many Nandita films you caught in theatres? Why it takes a Piku with Deepika and AB?
When VB, DPad, Kangana worked with Sanjays, Ajays, Akkis, Emraans, Khans, Roshan etc, then you gave chance to their different or quality work?!
Fact is the girls had to do other cinema which you so trashed, to get your attention to this cinema which you so admire now!
Put things in perspective at least!
Im an old timer so Yes, I have watched Mili, Anand, Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke and Khubsoorat (3 times) in theatres. I have also watched most Big B and Dharmendra masala movies in theaters as well as movies like Aakrosh, Garam Hawa, Aandhi in theatres...also enjoyed Sholay 5 times in theaters!
In the old days there was no TV premiere of relatively new movies, there was only one TV channel, Doordarshan and there were no VCR or DVDs. So obviously everyone just watched ALL movies in theaters, whether art movies or commercial ones.
In those days, masala entertainers didnt have vulgar dances and dialogues. They didnt have hero-heroine's pelvic thrusting, item girl dancing to dirty lyrics, hero mouthing Fart dialogues or dancing with towel rubbing private parts! 🤢
Its impossible to watch these current masala movies with kids, whereas in 70s and 80s we watched those relatively harmless masala movies as kids/teens ourselves.
Seriously, masala entertainers have become disgusting in last few years thanks to a few stars who demean and degrade themselves to please/ entertain their audience. Which is what the TM meant by superstars making fools of themselves.
My objection is to such degradation of cinema by including such vulgarity and crudity. Surely they can make movies without going so low.
Its a vicious cycle, the stars degrade themselves to sell movies, their target audiences lap it up, that encourages stars to go lower and lower in aesthetics and decency.
